Burrito recall overview:

  • Who: Don Miguel Foods recalled 10,642 pounds of frozen Ready-To-Eat (RTE) carne asada burritos.
  • Why: Some of the burritos may contain listeria.
  • Where: The burrito recall is effective across the United States.

Don Miguel Foods announced a recall for 10,642 pounds of its frozen carne asada burritos after they tested positive for listeria monocytogenes during routine testing from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The recalled burritos are 7-ounce individual wax paper packages containing Don Miguel Handmade Burrito Carne Asada with date code D23270 printed on the package, according to the burrito recall.

Don Miguel produced the impacted burritos on Sept. 27 with est. 20049 inside the USDA mark of inspection, according to the recall. The FSIS says it is concerned some of the burritos might already be in consumer freezers.

No reports of illness related to burrito recall, notice says

Don Miguel Foods says it has not received any reports of illness related to the recall. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

The risks of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.

The infection can go beyond the gastrointestinal tract and, in pregnant women, cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn, the recall states.

Listeriosis can be treated with antibiotics. Those who are in high-risk categories and experience flu-like symptoms within two months of eating the food should seek medical care and tell the health care provider about eating the contaminated food, according to the recall notice.

A separate company, Alpha Foods, voluntarily recalled its meatless breakfast sandwiches and burritos last year due to traces of undeclared milk, which may pose a health risk for those with milk allergies.
