A nationwide recall of a type of Natural Balance brand cat food has been announced by the manufacturer after routine testing revealed salmonella contamination.

The recall is limited to Natural Balance L.I.D. Green Pea & Chicken Dry Cat Formula sold online and in stores in five- and 10-pound bags throughout the US. The recalled cat food can be identified by its “Best If Used by Date” of “10-Mar-2022,” along with the UPC and Lot Code available on the recall notice

Consumers with the should stop using it immediately, says the recall notice. Consumers can either return the product to the retailer, Natural Balance Pet Foods, for a full refund or dispose of it.

The company says it has received no reports of pets or people falling ill, but warns that both cats and people handling the food may become sick if they come into contact with salmonella.

“Salmonella can infect cats eating a product contaminated with Salmonella bacteria,” states the recall notice issued by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which goes on to state, “Salmonella can spread to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not washed their hands after having contact with their cat’s foods, surfaces and/or cats that have been in contact with the contaminated product.”

In addition, the FDA points out that animals can spread salmonella to each other, even if they do not have symptoms.

Symptoms of salmonella infection in cats include:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Decreased appetite
  • Fever
  • Excessive salivation

Pet owners who are concerned that their cat or other animal has become sick from salmonella contamination should contact their veterinarian as soon as possible.

“Healthy people infected wit[h] Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever,” notes the FDA’s recall notice. “Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.”

Those who are experiencing severe health problems who may have come into contact with the recalled Natural Balance cat food should seek medical attention, says the agency.

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this and other safety recalls in the interest of consumers and their furry friends.
