220K Kidde Smoke Alarms Recalled Due to Failure to Alert to a Fire

Smoke alarms sold at major retailers nationwide are being recalled because they can fail to set off an alert when there’s a fire.

About 226,000 Kidde TruSense Smoke Alarms and combination smoke/carbon monoxide alarms are included in the recall, Kidde said in a notice on the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission website Thursday.

Kidde is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits

The seven recalled alarm models were sold at Walmart, Home Depot, Menards, Amazon and other stores between May 2019 and Sept. 2020, the recall says.

The company is asking consumers to “immediately” contact Kidde for a free replacement alarm. However, it asks that consumers keep using the recalled alarms until the replacement alarm is installed.

Consumers can spot if they have the impacted product by looking for the model number, printed on the back of the alarm. Kidde Model Series 2040, 2050, 2060 and 2070 Smoke and Combination Smoke/Carbon Monoxide alarms are included in the recall.

Only alarms with the TruSense logo or “AMBER=FAULT” printed on the front of the alarm are included.

No incidents or injuries have been reported so far due to the faulty alarm, the company said. The alarms sold for between $10 and $70.

Consumers can call Kidde for their replacement, or online and click “Support” and then “Product Alerts” for more information.

Meanwhile, Kidde is one of 15 companies facing a federal lawsuit filed by a firefighter from Texas diagnosed with prostate cancer who alleges it was involved in the design, manufacturing, and distribution of aqueous film-forming foam, or AFFF, which he says gave him cancer.

In 2015, a class action lawsuit accusing First Alert Inc. of selling smoke alarms that were defective and that misleadingly packaged was dismissed by a California federal judge, saying the plaintiff had failed to establish her claims.
