Consumers have been warned to stop using the Peloton Tread+ due to multiple reports of children and pets being seriously injured.

Peloton has rejected a federal warning over one of its treadmills, saying there is no reason for people to stop using its product despite dozens of children being injured and one dying after being sucked under the product.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a press release Saturday urgently warning consumers to stop using the Peloton Tread+ due to multiple reports of children and pets being seriously injured.

Peloton is not currently facing legal action over the injuries, but Top Class Actions follows product safety issues closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits

The commission said it was aware of 39 incidents so far, including the death. Its warning comes with a graphic video of a child captured on camera being sucked under the machine, which is shown with a warning due its disturbing content.

The child fatality was reported by Peloton on its own website. In another recent incident, a father found his three-year-old boy unconscious and trapped under the Peloton Tread+. He was taken to hospital and now has a “significant brain injury,” a CPSC incident report said.

“CPSC staff believes the Peloton Tread+ poses serious risks to children for abrasions, fractures, and death,” the report said.

“In light of multiple reports of children becoming entrapped, pinned, and pulled under the rear roller of the product, CPSC urges consumers with children at home to stop using the product immediately.” The safety commission stated if the product must be used, it should be used in a locked room.

However, Peloton shot back at the CPSC warning Saturday, calling it “inaccurate and misleading.”

“There is no reason to stop using the Tread+, as long as all warnings and safety instructions are followed. Children under 16 should never use the Tread+, and Members should keep children, pets, and objects away from the Tread+ at all times,” it said.

The exercise machine giant said it had a safety key to prevent the machine from being turned on when not in use, and came with multiple safety instructions. It also said its members had been sharing tips to keep children safe during workouts.

“They schedule workouts during nap time or at night when children are asleep. Or they have a spouse or partner watch the children in another room. Some tell the company they use a baby gate to keep children, pets, and objects away from their fitness equipment.”

Anonymous officials told the Washington Post the CPSC had recommended recalling the Tread+ and had been negotiating with Peloton over how the warning would be phrased.

They said the commission had asked Peloton for its help with a safety investigation, but the company would not give it the contact details of a victim’s parents, forcing the commission to get a subpoena.

The news comes after the company was forced to issue a recall last year for first-generation Peloton pedals over concerns that they can break unexpectedly and injure riders.
