Recalled Vehicles Still Used by Government Warn Consumer Groups

The US government continues to use unrepaired, recalled vehicles, putting thousands of employees and members of the public at risk, warn more than a dozen consumer advocacy groups in a letter to the Biden Administration.

The letter, dated Thursday, April 15, says that the federal fleet includes vehicles that were the subject of Takata airbag recalls and other vehicle safety defects. Consumer groups and unions representing more than 570,000 members signed the letter, including the Center for Auto Safety, Consumer Reports, the American Federation of Government Employees, the National Treasury Employees Union.

“Unrepaired recalled vehicles have already killed and injured too many, says the letter. “Defective airbags, fire-prone fuel tanks, faulty tires, and malfunctioning ignition switches are defects that have led to recalls. Too often, however, vehicles remain in use even once they have been recalled. In 2020, there were 55 million vehicles on U.S. roads, subject to recall but remaining unrepaired.”

The letter to the Biden Administration says that in addition to keeping vehicles with potential safety defects on the road, the federal government sells these unrepaired, recalled vehicles to the unwitting public.

“This practice endangers the lives of tens of thousands of federal employees and all who share the roadway environment with them,” contends the letter.

The consumer groups are reportedly pleading with the Biden Administration to repair and prohibit the use and sale of recalled vehicles, according to the Associated Press. They say that the federal government is well aware of the problem, but has failed to take enough action to warn consumers about unrepaired, recalled federal vehicles on the road.

“No employer, or seller, should knowingly allow for the use, or sale, of unsafe vehicles. Especially the federal government.” Jason Levine, Executive Director of the Center for Auto Safety which signed the letter said, reports ABC News. “That is why we are so proud to join with our fellow leaders in the consumer safety community, as well as organizations representing the interests of federal employees, to call on the administration to put an end to these practices which endanger the lives of tens of thousands of federal employees, and all who share the roadway environment with them.”

Indeed, more than 880 recalls concerning safety issues affecting 55 million vehicles were reported in 2020 alone. Recalls included serious safety issues, including spontaneous fires, faulty airbags, and other problems.

I have a 2017 Ford Fusion S my check engine light constantly comes on and stays on my rear right tire sensor went out Ford says neither are covered under my warranty. I don’t understand how this can be then they tell me how much it costs to repair these things. I go to Ford for all my services and car needs but their prices are ridiculous and it’s always your warranty has expired or you can’t use it for certain repairs. Why am I paying for an extended warranty my car to not to be able to use it. I don’t get it.
