Siding shingles in the gables of a house - Allura fiber cement siding

UPDATE:

  • The Allura fiber cement siding settlement was granted final approval in May 2021, and the claim process should commence by the end of June.
  • Class Members should register their intent to file a claim now. Note: Registering for this settlement is not the same as filing a claim.

A $12.5 million settlement has been reached over claims Allura fiber cement siding manufactured and sold by Plycem USA is defective.

Consumers may be able to make a claim in this settlement if they own a home that has Allura fiber cement siding that was manufactured in Plycem’s White City, Oregon, plant between Feb. 1, 2014, and May 7, 2014, or manufactured at the company’s Roaring River, North Carolina, plant between Feb 1, 2014, and Feb. 18, 2015.

The date and place of the siding’s manufacture are on the back of each board.

Class Members should register their intent to file a claim now.

Please note that registering for this settlement is not the same as filing a claim.

According to the plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit, the Allura fiber cement siding is prone to cracking, bowing, shrinking, breaking, and other issues.

Other fiber cement siding uses common grain and silica, the plaintiffs said. Allura fiber cement siding, however, is made using fly ash, a byproduct of power plants burning coal.

This method of manufacture reportedly costs less than using cement, but allegedly led to the defects found in the Allura fiber cement siding.

The plaintiffs claimed the material choices made in manufacturing the Allura siding resulted in “water absorption, porosity problems, and other uniform defects,” despite the company’s promises the siding will last 50 years.

The defendants, meanwhile, maintain the siding is not defective and performs well as long as it has been correctly installed, but they have agreed to a settlement to end the class action lawsuit.

The settlement covers consumers’ claims of “Qualifying Damage” evidenced by damage not caused by an improper installation, as well as evidence of property damage allegedly resulting from the Allura fiber cement siding’s failure.

Eligible Class Members can choose from three options:

  • A repair and replace option providing compensation for replacement siding and $4.75 per square foot for additional costs, such as labor and installation
  • A “quick cash” option providing $4.25/square foot for areas showing qualifying damage
  • A cash option providing additional compensation for labor upon proof repairs have been made. This option is available only on claims for qualifying damage that do not exceed 30 percent of an elevation. Eligible claimants will receive $4.25 per square foot for areas with qualifying damage within 30 days of the claim’s final approval in addition to $4.25 per square foot “for the remainder of the elevation within 30 days of submission of approved proof of replacement of the claimed area.”

The deadline to exclude yourself from or object to the settlement is March 18, 2021.

A final approval hearing is scheduled for May 17, 2021.

My new home, built in 2020, has Allura Fiber Cement Siding that is cracking in many areas. I have owned this home since/took occupancy 10/28/20 – 2 yrs and 5 months when numerous cracks observed in Fiber Cement Siding panels observed/photographed by professionals. Also, there is major discoloration of planks on right side. I was never notified of any class action with the Allura Fiber Cement Siding. My forever home is becoming a nightmare! Suggestions welcome.

Have had issues with the siding for last couple years and didn’t know about this class action suit. House was built in 2016 and has warping, cracks, and bowing. My builder know longer builds homes. I am curious if can still be added to lawsuit.

  4. Karen says:

We just filed a claim with Allura and they sent a representative out who had NO idea what Allura siding was and NEVER climbed up to see if any more cracks only the SAME pics as I submitted. I was given a no go on the replacement and we have been in our house 2.5 years, YES 2.5!!! Please add to Class Action if possible. I have resubmitted a rebuttal to the response from Allura. Basically $300/ sheet out of MY pocket. NO WAY….. AWFUL representation trying to get away with something. Backing their product maybe. EXACTLY. Please add us to the Class Action Suit as well. Richmond Virginia.
Cannot even get the Builder Southern Traditions – Rob Carter to respond either. Very Frustrating.

I live in Virginia and my house was built using Allura siding in 2015 by Stephen Alaexander Homes. We are experiencing many cracks. How do we get added to this class action suit.

I have hundreds of cracked and warped boards on my house sided in 1/2016. Allura warranty is offering me just over $2000 to sign and never bother them again. I’m very sad about this, for so many reasons, and this ‘offer’ to stand by warranty is just a fraction of the expense to re-side my pretty new house. Does anyone have any idea if this ‘offer’ from Allura is comparable to the possible damages from the lawsuit? Obviously if I could only hope to receive a few thousand from the lawsuit then I’m better off just taking the $2000 from Allura and warning everyone I know about their shoddy product.

  10. Andrew says:

I live in Canada and have been told I cannot be included. I have Allura siding and there are small hairline cracks in every piece that Allura claims is aesthetic and a couple major ones. The extent of efflorescence on my house is insane and very embarrassing. I installed the product myself as I have been a siding installer for close to 8 years.

They claim it is not warrantable even though the siding is absorbing water and creating efflorescence, cracking (aesthetic or not the finish is cracked allowing water to get to the materials not being protected by the finish). Also they claim it happens to fibre cement siding, however I live in an area where it is architecturally controlled to fibre cement and I am the only house with efflorescence.

I’m getting close to telling them I’m going to start a class here in Canada since I can’t be apart of the settlement in the states and they aren’t following up on any warranty.
