Peloton Tread Recall, Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Peloton Interactive announced the release date of its less-expensive Peloton Tread treadmills.
  • Why: Peloton delayed the original release of Peloton Tread in May after recalling 125,000 of its Tread+ devices because of safety concerns.
  • Where: The Peloton Tread treadmills will be available for purchase nationwide.

Peloton Interactive is releasing its much-anticipated Peloton Tread on Aug. 30 in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

The lower-cost Peloton Tread was originally scheduled for public release in late May but got delayed after a recall of the company’s higher-end Tread+ machines

The recall affected 125,000 of it’s Tread+ treadmills and followed reports of one child dying and 29 others being injured after getting sucked under the machine. The original Peloton Tread was also recalled after reports that the touch screen monitor on the device could detach and fall.

“We’ve worked hard to make sure the new Tread truly earns its spot in Members’ homes,” John Foley, Peloton’s CEO and co-founder, said in a news release announcing the Peloton Tread. “We’ll always continue to innovate our hardware, software and safety features to live up to our commitment to Member safety and to improving the full Member experience.”

Safety features incorporated into the new Peloton Tread include needing to enter a four-digit code to unlock the machine and the inclusion of a safety key which can be pulled to necessitate a quick stop.

The speed and incline knobs are intentionally located on the side of the rails in order to make them quickly accessible to the user.

“Our goal is to be the go-to fitness solution and the largest and safest home fitness brand in the world,” Foley said.

New Treadmill Released After Peloton Tread Injuries, Recall, Class Action Lawsuits

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a warning in April regarding the safety of the Tread+ devices in which it urged customers with children to stop using the product immediately.

“In light of multiple reports of children becoming entrapped, pinned, and pulled under the rear roller of the product, CPSC urges consumers with children at home to stop using the product immediately,” the CPSC said.

Despite the plea, Peloton initially refused to recall the product and assured consumers that the Tread+ was safe. Consumers filed a class action lawsuit against the company in response, claiming it misled them about the safety of the $4,300 treadmills.

The company would go on to apologize to the CPSC for resisting calls to recall the product and stopped sales of the Tread+ while it worked on improving safety.
