Peloton has issued a nationwide recall on its treadmills following child injuries.

Peloton has announced a recall of 125,000 of its Tread+ treadmills after it was linked to the death of one child and the injuries of 29 others that were sucked under the machine.

The recall comes after the company refused to recall the product in April despite pleas from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), which had received reports of more than 70 incidents caused by the treadmill. Reports centered on “children becoming entrapped, pinned, and pulled under” the treadmill, the commission said.

Due to Peloton’s refusal to recall the product, consumers in California filed a class action lawsuit against the company, saying that the company deceived customers about the safety of the $4,300 treadmill.

Now, as the Consumer Product Safety Commission was gearing up to sue the company in order to issue a recall, the company came to the table to forge a recall agreement with the federal regulators.

The recall notice says that customers should immediately stop using the treadmills and contact Peloton for a full refund before Nov. 6 2022, and that Peloton has stopped sale and distribution of the Tread+ and continues to work on additional hardware modifications.

For customers who do not want a refund, Peloton is offering software safety improvements.

On top of being linked to the death of a 6-year-old child, the Tread+ treadmill has been linked to injuries including broken bones, cuts, and third-degree abrasions in 29 other children. It has also been linked to injuries in pets.

In a statement, Peloton CEO John Foley apologized for the company’s initial response to the CPSC’s request and said that the decision to recall both products was the right thing to do for Peloton’s Members and their families.

“I want to be clear, Peloton made a mistake in our initial response to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s request that we recall the Tread+. We should have engaged more productively with them from the outset. For that, I apologize. Today’s announcement reflects our recognition that, by working closely with the CPSC, we can increase safety awareness for our Members.”

The Tread+ model number is TR01 and the Tread model number is TR02, and can be found on a black sticker located on the end cap in the front of the treadmill deck.

Consumers can contact Peloton toll-free at (844) 410-0141 from 9:00am to 7:00pm  ET, Monday through Friday, and 9:00am to 6:30pm. ET on weekends or online.

Peloton also announced a recall of its new Peloton Tread, of which there are only 1,050 models. The CPSC said that the touch screen monitor on the treadmills could detach and fall. Peloton is offering a full refund or free repairs.
