MacBook Cracked Screen Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: A consumer lodged a class action lawsuit against Apple, Inc.
  • Why: The plaintiff claims Apple failed to disclose to consumers that its M1 MacBook Pro and M1 MacBook Air laptops come with defective screens prone to cracking.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.

Apple’s new M1 MacBook laptops have fragile screens that crack, black out, malfunction, or otherwise cease to function without cause, according to a class action lawsuit filed Tuesday.

Plaintiff Nestor Almeida claims Apple has failed to cooperate with thousands of consumers who have been affected by screen issues on their Apple M1 MacBook Pro and M1 MacBook Air laptops.

Almeida wants to represent a nationwide Class of consumers who bought an M1 MacBook Pro or M1 MacBook Air laptop, along with a New Jersey subclass.

MacBook Screens Crack, Expensive to Repair

Almeida claims the screen on the M1 MacBook Pro he purchased from Apple’s online store in January will turn entirely black or display magenta squares, and that he would not have purchased the product had he known about the issues.

Apple exacerbated the problem by misrepresenting the issue and failing to disclose that the screen was defective, the class action lawsuit alleges.

The plaintiff alleges that Apple routinely turned away consumers who brought the issue to their attention and tried to secure replacements or repairs from the company. Consumers often had to pay between $600 and $850 to fix the issue themselves, according to the class action lawsuit.

Some consumers who paid to have the problem fixed had the issue quickly return, says Almeida, who claims Apple knew the screens were defective because of internal testing and user complaints.

Apple finally addressed the issue on Aug. 27, informing consumers they should be careful not to leave any materials on their keyboards or display or covers on their MacBook laptops when they close them, according to the class action lawsuit.

Almeida claims the MacBook screen issues manifest on their own and are not caused by covers or loose debris getting trapped between the keyboard and screen.

Apple unintentionally acknowledges the defect, the class action lawsuit alleges, by informing consumers in the address that MacBooks are designed to be intentionally thin, and, as such, the clearance between the top case and the display is “engineered to tight tolerances.”

Almeida alleges Apple is guilty of fraudulent concealment, breach of contract / common law warranty, and in violation of New Jersey’s Consumer Fraud Act, Breach of Express Warranty, and Breach of the Implied Warranty of Merchantability.

Plaintiff is demanding a jury trial and seeking actual, general, special, incidental, statutory, punitive, and consequential damages and/or restitution for himself and all Class Members.

This isn’t the first time Apple’s MacBook laptops have been involved in a complaint. A class action lawsuit filed in 2014 alleged the company failed to fix graphical issues and system failures affecting its 2011 MacBook Pro.

Purchased a m1 pro 16” in November 2021, just sent it in (May 2022) for screen repair and was told it was my fault and it will cost me just over $800! Waiting for it to be returned.

  2. Shawn says:

Cracked screen on a 5 month old computer, accused of abuse by a rude apple employee with no physical evidence to justify the accusations. Please add me.

  3. Richard D says:

I purchased a MacBook Air 2020 M1 about 7 months ago. I only used it for work 3 days a week. I placed the Macbook on my desk before bed and when I went to log on in the morning the display was black and had 2 rainbow hairline cracks in the upper right-hand section of the screen randomly. I do not own or use a keyboard cover, case or camera protector. I was just on the phone today with 2 different Apple Customer Service Reps for about 30 minutes each that were quick to claim “physical damage” even though nothing physically happened to it. I also mentioned that many other people have experienced the same thing, which they were quick to quietly acknowledge and dismiss. I have no animals, no kids, I live alone. Should I try the Ghostbusters perhaps? This issue is most definitely a product flaw/error that Apple should be held accountable for. Absolutely ridiculous that anyone should pay $500 on top of the $1,000 cost for the MacBook to repair an issue Apple is responsible for. Seems like they were produced with a defect purposely to bump repair sales, SIGN ME UP PLEASE. Highway Robbery at its peak.

I purchased and screen flickered within the first 60 days, now 6 months later screen went out as I closed the screen. 13inch MacBook Pro

  5. Dione Dejno says:

I purchased TWO M1 MacBooks in 2021. One MacBook Pro with the Touch Bar in March, and a MacBook Air in June. The pro screen began flickering, and two days later a crack began spreading in the corner. Now I have vertical and horizontal lines across the screen, which sometimes goes completely black. TWO DAYS LATER my MacBook Air screen went completely black while I was using it. Both are business computers which stay in a desk, and are not mobile. How do I get added to the class action suit? I have spoke. With apple several times and have been told it will cost about $800 to replace screens, even though they should be under warranty still within the standard one year manufacturer warranty. I love all my apple products, but this is massively disappointing.

  6. Thomas Richards says:

Same thing has happened to me. Never misused the MacBook. Went to use it and the screen was cracked behind the glass. Sent to apple and they say it’s not covered by warranty and want me to pay £570 + VAT. I am not paying it. I would rather see them in court. This is the wrong way to treat loyal customers. Please add me to your list

  7. rita sampaio says:

Please join me. my M1 screen broke out of nowhere.

  8. Keely Misor says:

Yes I purchased a MacBook Air M1 in June and have had the same issue with a cracked screen and now Apple is not even wanting to honor the AppleCare that I had purchased and canceled it with no refund and I am at a complete loss and would like to be added as well I am so upset for a computer only 6 months old it is beyond upsetting! PLEASE ADD ME!

I purchased a MacBook Air with the Apple M1 chip. Two months after I received it, there were black and white lines on the screen when I open it up. Now there are large black areas. Apple asked if I dropped it or closed it with something inside and told me take it to one of their stores to get it fixed. I know with my Apple Care+ I will have to pay $99 to get it fixed. I don’t want to pay to have it fixed when it will just happen again. The closest place for me to take it is 100 miles. My last laptop was a Macbook Pro that I bought in 2015. I accidentally ran over my backpack with my laptop in it. The laptop wasn’t damaged at all. I believed Apple was one of the best producers of electronics. That is why I decided to buy a new Apple MacBook. I will think about an Apple MacBook when they admit that these are poorly made and have rectified the problem.

  10. Katrina Pruitt says:

I have been impacted by My Macbook Air did not have anything between the screen at all. It was sitting on my desk closed, nothing near it, yet the next day when I went to use it my screen had an internal crack. Apple has refused to cover the repair and wants me to path $500 to repair it.
