MacBook Cracked Screen Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: A consumer lodged a class action lawsuit against Apple, Inc.
  • Why: The plaintiff claims Apple failed to disclose to consumers that its M1 MacBook Pro and M1 MacBook Air laptops come with defective screens prone to cracking.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.

Apple’s new M1 MacBook laptops have fragile screens that crack, black out, malfunction, or otherwise cease to function without cause, according to a class action lawsuit filed Tuesday.

Plaintiff Nestor Almeida claims Apple has failed to cooperate with thousands of consumers who have been affected by screen issues on their Apple M1 MacBook Pro and M1 MacBook Air laptops.

Almeida wants to represent a nationwide Class of consumers who bought an M1 MacBook Pro or M1 MacBook Air laptop, along with a New Jersey subclass.

MacBook Screens Crack, Expensive to Repair

Almeida claims the screen on the M1 MacBook Pro he purchased from Apple’s online store in January will turn entirely black or display magenta squares, and that he would not have purchased the product had he known about the issues.

Apple exacerbated the problem by misrepresenting the issue and failing to disclose that the screen was defective, the class action lawsuit alleges.

The plaintiff alleges that Apple routinely turned away consumers who brought the issue to their attention and tried to secure replacements or repairs from the company. Consumers often had to pay between $600 and $850 to fix the issue themselves, according to the class action lawsuit.

Some consumers who paid to have the problem fixed had the issue quickly return, says Almeida, who claims Apple knew the screens were defective because of internal testing and user complaints.

Apple finally addressed the issue on Aug. 27, informing consumers they should be careful not to leave any materials on their keyboards or display or covers on their MacBook laptops when they close them, according to the class action lawsuit.

Almeida claims the MacBook screen issues manifest on their own and are not caused by covers or loose debris getting trapped between the keyboard and screen.

Apple unintentionally acknowledges the defect, the class action lawsuit alleges, by informing consumers in the address that MacBooks are designed to be intentionally thin, and, as such, the clearance between the top case and the display is “engineered to tight tolerances.”

Almeida alleges Apple is guilty of fraudulent concealment, breach of contract / common law warranty, and in violation of New Jersey’s Consumer Fraud Act, Breach of Express Warranty, and Breach of the Implied Warranty of Merchantability.

Plaintiff is demanding a jury trial and seeking actual, general, special, incidental, statutory, punitive, and consequential damages and/or restitution for himself and all Class Members.

This isn’t the first time Apple’s MacBook laptops have been involved in a complaint. A class action lawsuit filed in 2014 alleged the company failed to fix graphical issues and system failures affecting its 2011 MacBook Pro.

  1. Sean Montague says:

I am losing my faith in Apple and their products. Bought MacAir M1 for my niece for school, she has been very careful with it. Put it away one night next morning screen cracked. Apple says negligence or something on the keyboard when screen was closed. $425 to repair more than half the cost of purchase. Apple very rarely admits to flaws in their products instead looks to put blame on the consumer. I could buy a cheap Dell or HP for the cost of repair and have their support more than Apple.

I got my cracked MacBook Pro late 2017 replaced on July 2023, despite paying a premium price, I have been provided with a low-quality replacement that has cracked, resembling the quality of a generic product. The crack is subtle and unnoticeable under regular lighting conditions. However, it becomes apparent when viewed under bright and direct light. The faint crack is clearly not a result of mishandling or any external impact, but rather a clear indication of poor quality material being used or manufacturing or assembly defect at a function part like the hinge of the laptop screen. As the crack is difficult to notice, it is fairly possible that the crack might have gone unnoticed within the warranty period. I discovered this issue after the warranty period had expired. When I approached Apple to address this concern, they refused to replace the screen, citing the end of the warranty period.

I had my MacBook Pro 14” (2021) in my backpack that has laptop sleeve built in and then I have another separate laptop sleeve inside that which I store my laptop so double protected. I used the MacBook put it back in my bag came back 30 mins later pulled it out to open my MacBook with a cracked screen on left edge and a black screen other than the crack. Nothing was between the screen and keyboard, no damage to exterior of laptop and no crack in the exterior glass. No reason it should be cracked.

  4. David Babins says:

I HAVE a model A2337 M1 macbook air. One day, in the morning, I turned it on and the screen looked cracked. It had not been dropped or sustained damage. I took it to a 3rd party, unifix in Winter Park, Fl 32789. they said I could get a c=screen or hey would find one. I bought a screen from Amazon which was compatible. They said it did not work. i returned it to amazon. I then had unifix order a screen. They then said the laptop was not repairable. itook it to an apple store in Alramonte springs fl .hey said 3rd party had capped off connectors, and they wold not touch it after a 3rd party tried to fix it. It has sat on a shelf since

I bought a MacBook Air M1 in 2022/10 and the lower part of the frame is broken. I didn’t do anything for the laptop. I just put its case for the night and next morning a saw the frame broken.
I call a lot of time the Apple Support, but one of the man didn’t want to help me, just he said it was my fault and this is just a aesthetic error.
Other staff was helpful but unfortunately when I send a picture to my MacBook, she call me again and say the same that the guy, she couldn’t help me because there was a breakpont, so tell me this is my fault and the Apple wouldn’t fix my Maxbook just if I pay the cost.
I have several product for the Apple and never happend this before.
    I’m so disappointed in Apple.
I don’t think so that international compeny can do alone with that problem, the Apple just say it would be cost 200.000Huf, this is my value, in Hungary. Wich is about 550 $. That’s absurd. Not what I paid for.

  6. Dave Fowlie says:

I have an Apple M1 Macbook, when I purchased it, it arrived with a cracked screen, which I had to have repaired right away. Then flash foward and in april/may of 2023 it suddenly had an issue with the screen. This was also repaired at cost. Less than 2 months later it had a similar issues, where the screen appears cracked. I am in the middle of dealing with this now, but it looks like there are other that are having the same issue as me.

  7. Chong says:

We purchased a Mac Air M1 laptop in 2022/04. The screen cracked randomly last week. We got charged $400 for the repair. This is ridiculous that Apple denied the failure and charge their loyal customers
