Revlon class action overview:

  • Who: Plaintiff Jaime Givens filed a class action lawsuit against Revlon Inc. and Revlon Consumer Products.
  • Why: Revlon’s Creme of Nature Moisture-Rich Hair Color with Shea Butter Conditioner is marketed as being “ammonia free” but actually contains ammonia, the lawsuit claims.
  • Where: The Revlon hair color class action was filed in federal court in Texas.

Revlon is facing a class action lawsuit over a hair color product that allegedly contains ammonia despite being marketed as “ammonia free.”

Plaintiff Jaime Givens, who has an ammonia allergy, tested Revlon’s Creme of Nature Moisture-Rich Hair Color with Shea Butter Conditioner with at-home testing strips. The Revlon class action lawsuit claims the product was actually found to contain ammonia.

“By marketing a product as being ‘ammonia free’ when it in fact contains ammonia, defendants are putting consumers like plaintiff at risk by exposing them to allergens — and this class action is necessary to end that practice,” the Revlon hair color ammonia lawsuit claims. “In any event, Defendants’ advertising is false and misleading.”

Ammonia has long been used in hair color products but its negative impacts have come to light more recently as the chemical can damage hair by stripping natural oils and proteins along with causing dryness, frizziness and lackluster appearance, according to the Revlon hair color class action.

Revlon hair color first led to chemical burns on scalp, then tested positive for ammonia, lawsuit claims

The Revlon hair color is described as “ammonia free” on the front of the box and also in online descriptions.

After using the product, Givens found that she had an allergic reaction and experienced swollen lymph nodes in her arm and neck and chemical burns on her scalp, the Revlon lawsuit claims.

Givens claims she tested the hair color with the at-home ammonia test kit after having the allergic reaction, and the product tested positive for ammonia.

Three Almay makeup customers sued the brand and its parent company, Revlon, last year, alleging the makeup contains harmful chemicals despite being marketed as clean and healthy.
