man using just for men hair dyeA group of guys who used Just for Men hair dye have filed a class action lawsuit against the product’s makers saying that they suffered permanent skin discoloration.

Louisiana resident Ray Du Boc Ali states that he experienced rashes and burns on his face after using the Just for Men beard and mustache dye.

Allegedly, he also suffered permanent skin discoloration from the product because it contained harsh chemicals.

Du Boc Ali states that the beard and mustache dye contains p-phenylenediamine, or PPD, a known irritant. Allegedly, it is a “coal tar dye,” meaning it is made from petroleum.

The Just For Men class action lawsuit states that the instructions for use of the product informs users to conduct a “patch test” on a small area of skin before using the product on the entirety of a beard or mustache, to test for possible allergies or negative reactions to the ingredients in the product.

However, the test patch exposes users to risk and is dangerous because it reportedly does not meet regulations for such tests set forth by the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

Allegedly, typical patch tests are conducted with the testing area covered, but in contrast, Combe Inc. instructs Just For Men users to leave the area uncovered for at least 48 hours. Du Boc Ali says that this technique is flawed because it allows the test patch to become contaminated.

The Just For Men skin irritant class action lawsuit argues that the test is flawed because though the product contains a harsh, irritating chemical, the patch test is conducted by users with no training in understanding the results of the test. Additionally, the company allegedly does not tell users to contact their doctors about the patch test.

The Just For Men class action lawsuit goes on to assert that the instructions do not tell users how much product to apply, so customers may end up exposing themselves to much higher amounts of PPD than they would have been exposed to had the test been properly controlled.

Allegedly, this can result in skin irritation, rashes, and burning. In the case of Du Boc Ali, this allegedly resulted in him developing permanent skin discoloration.

According to the Just For Men beard and mustache dye class action lawsuit, the Just For Men patch test “is an unregulated, uncontrolled, open, random experiment requiring self-administration of strong allergens by untrained consumers for diagnostic purposes.”

The Just For Men allergen class action lawsuit asserts that the dye does not include a disclaimer warning users of risks of burns and discoloration. Allegedly, such a warning is required by the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

The men are represented by Shane C. Fulton, Janet G. Abaray and Kenneth M. Daly of Burg Simpson Eldredge Hersh & Jardine PC.

The Just For Men Dye Irritant Class Action Lawsuit is Du Boc Ali, et al. v. Combe Inc., et al., Case No. 7:19-cv-06187, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

  2. Nick Tillekeratne says:

After using just for men beard dye over the last 6 years, I suffer from dark patches and itchy skin. I first went to see my doctor then got referred to a dermatologist, requested biopsy. Two samples were taken and stiches on my face. Once the results came back it was not cancer or anything else caused by beard dye I was using “just for men”! I am very angry with this product and the pain it has caused me and my face.
