Grande Cosmetic Serums Overview:

  • Who: Grande Cosmetics has been hit with a class action lawsuit over its hair growth serums
  • What: Consumers allege that the company is selling its lash, brow and hair growth serums as cosmetics when in reality they are drugs with an active ingredient that should only be used under the supervision of a physician given the risks of serious side effects.
  • Where: The case is pending in California district court.

Grande Cosmetics’ over-the-counter lash, brow and hair serums contain an active drug ingredient that should only be used with the supervision of a physician due to its possible serious side effects, including eye damage, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Alexandra Mandel filed the lawsuit against the company in California after discovering its GrandeLASH-MD Lash Enhancing Serum, GrandeBROW Brow Enhancing Serum and GrandeHAIR Enhancement Serum all contain isopropyl cloprostenate (ICP), which she believes damaged her eye.

The Food and Drug Administration has warned manufactures that ICP is associated with potential serious side effects like iris discoloration, the development of growths in the eye and the complete loss of eyelashes and has further warned that ICP lash and brow products are not safe for use except under supervision of a licensed physician, the class action explains.

Mandel says in the lawsuit that she bought the serums without knowing that they were new drugs and only stopped using her GrandeLASH-MD when she developed a growth in her eye. She says that the growth “baffled her doctors,” who did not know she was using the product, and that it had to be surgically removed.

“After learning in January 2022 about the true properties of ICP and of Defendant’s fraud, Ms. Mandel believes that she developed the growth in her eye due to her use of GrandeLASH-MD,” the claim states.

Grande Cosmetics Aware Serums May Cause Damage, Plaintiff Says

Mandel further asserts that Grande Cosmetics is aware that the enhancement serums may cause damage, and that, despite knowledge of injuries caused by the serums via numerous consumer complaints, Grande Cosmetics has refused to provide an adequate remedy for the systemic injuries caused by its products.

She says that because the hair growth serums were drugs as defined by California law, Grande Cosmetics was required to seek regulatory approval before selling them to consumers but did not, and instead “concocted a scheme” to sell them as cosmetics to avoid regulatory requirements.

“Even though the Enhancement Serums are unapproved drugs that should never have been available for sale to consumers, Grande Cosmetics unlawfully sold hundreds of thousands of units of the Enhancement Serums to California consumers at around $65-$125 apiece,” the lawsuit says.

In the class action, Mandel says the adverse side effects caused by the active drug ingredient is material information that consumers need to know.

“Grande Cosmetics omitted the above-described material information with the knowledge that its omissions would mislead and deceive consumers,” according to the lawsuit.

Mandel wants to represent anyone else who has purchased the serums in California and is suing for violations of state business and advertising laws. She seeks certification of the class, restitution, damages, enjoinment, legal fees and costs, interest and a jury trial.

In October, Grande Cosmetics was hit with a separate class action lawsuit in California where lead Plaintiff Genna Ribak made the same claims as Mandel. Ribak argues the serums should be labeled as drugs, saying she was unaware that any of the serums she purchased contained ingredients that could be associated with serious and undisclosed side effects.

  1. Jami Barnes says:

Please add me been using this for a while and my eyes have never been the same.

  2. Jennifer Holmes says:

Well this explains my sudden blepharitis and multiple styles. I have two chalazions on one eye that won’t go away (had them a year) and my eyesight has worsened. The only factor that could have caused this is my use of grande lash. I never had any issues until i used the serum I ordered on Amazon. I have doctors appts to prove it. I am actually following up with my doctor in Feb to see if I need steroid shots to make the chalazions I’ve had for a year go away. Praying I don’t need surgery.
And the discoloration is there but not as devastating as the chalazions.

  3. Jackeline Cazares says:

Hi I used grande lash for about 2-3 years straight and I believe it is why I have bad eyesight now. There were several side effects my lashes were super long but after about a year of use my vision was getting blurry when I did not have that before. I would wake up in the morning with very sensitive eyes. I believe grande lashes is to blame for this.

  4. Haley Rice says:

I used grande lash serum and now the top and side my eyelid have permanent red damage. And it hasn’t gone away.

  5. Nicole Davies says:

My entire eyelid on one side was red swollen and inflamed. I wasn’t able to leave the house for over a week. My doctor put me on antibiotics. I have images of just how bad it was. One month later, it is still red and has a lump which dies t appear to be going away.
I am located in australia and this eyelash serum needs to be banned.

  6. Kristen H. says:

I’ve been using GrandePOUT, GrandeREPAIR, GrandeLASH, and GrandBROW for over a year now. The eyebrow serum works fine, I have not noticed any side effects. The eyelash serum I stopped after a month. It made my eyes extremely red and irritated, I also got 3 styes at once. It was awfully painful. The eyelash conditioning mascara (repair) I have loved to use, but I did notice I started getting dark circles under my eyes, which I’ve never had in my life. I actually found this website because my eyes are bloodshot and burning and I’m pretty sure it’s from this lash conditioner. Sadly will be throwing out all 5 of the products I bought for nearly $350.

  7. Chanel Taghdis says:

Months after using this lash serum I still have dark circles under my eyes. Despite claiming that the side effects go away once you stop use, these dark circles seem to be irreversible. My friends tell me it looks like I have been punched in the eyes.

  8. Pamela says:

I used the brow and lash serum a total of 3 times when I noticed my eyelids felt oddly heavy, and seemed to be discolored. I threw both vials in the garbage immediately. I’m hoping the irritation is not permanent and will go away in a few days. I chastised myself for allowing vanity to get in the way of my better judgment since my brows and lashes are perfectly fine as they are. It’s disgraceful to learn that these products are knowingly sold with dangerous ingredients.

  9. Laura Conley says:

I have been using Grande Lash MD and while it did make my eyelashes grow (and no other serum has done this) it has left really obvious, awful dark circles under my eyes that make me look hollow & older. I hate it.

    1. Laura Graham says:

I am experiencing extreme eye twitching since I’ve been using grande lash serum. I started searching to see if others are experiencing the same and it turns out, they are.

  10. Sabrina V says:

I started using Grande lash serum in March off and on for a couple months. Mostly due to noticing so irritation, dry eye and vision cloudy so I thought not using it every single day would still give me the benefit of lash growth without side affects. Eventually after not seeing a change I stopped but then I started getting styes. I now have a cluster on the top left lid along with a small stye on the bottom of my left lash line and a big stye on my right to lid. My eyes are always red and dry. I’ve seen my optometrist and was prescribed an antibiotic and steroid ointment. After completing that cycle I see no changes and have been told I would need surgery or a special procedure to get them all removed which insurance does not cover. I’ve never had any allergic reaction to anything and have also gotten lash extensions for years with no irritation whatsoever but stopped last fall. I’ve always maintained good eye hygiene and was confident I would not have a reaction. I was wrong and I regret not staying away from Grande Lash serum. I took my eye health for granted and now it’s going to cost me way more just because I wanted thicker lashes.
