Grande Cosmetic Serums Overview:

  • Who: Grande Cosmetics has been hit with a class action lawsuit over its hair growth serums
  • What: Consumers allege that the company is selling its lash, brow and hair growth serums as cosmetics when in reality they are drugs with an active ingredient that should only be used under the supervision of a physician given the risks of serious side effects.
  • Where: The case is pending in California district court.

Grande Cosmetics’ over-the-counter lash, brow and hair serums contain an active drug ingredient that should only be used with the supervision of a physician due to its possible serious side effects, including eye damage, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Alexandra Mandel filed the lawsuit against the company in California after discovering its GrandeLASH-MD Lash Enhancing Serum, GrandeBROW Brow Enhancing Serum and GrandeHAIR Enhancement Serum all contain isopropyl cloprostenate (ICP), which she believes damaged her eye.

The Food and Drug Administration has warned manufactures that ICP is associated with potential serious side effects like iris discoloration, the development of growths in the eye and the complete loss of eyelashes and has further warned that ICP lash and brow products are not safe for use except under supervision of a licensed physician, the class action explains.

Mandel says in the lawsuit that she bought the serums without knowing that they were new drugs and only stopped using her GrandeLASH-MD when she developed a growth in her eye. She says that the growth “baffled her doctors,” who did not know she was using the product, and that it had to be surgically removed.

“After learning in January 2022 about the true properties of ICP and of Defendant’s fraud, Ms. Mandel believes that she developed the growth in her eye due to her use of GrandeLASH-MD,” the claim states.

Grande Cosmetics Aware Serums May Cause Damage, Plaintiff Says

Mandel further asserts that Grande Cosmetics is aware that the enhancement serums may cause damage, and that, despite knowledge of injuries caused by the serums via numerous consumer complaints, Grande Cosmetics has refused to provide an adequate remedy for the systemic injuries caused by its products.

She says that because the hair growth serums were drugs as defined by California law, Grande Cosmetics was required to seek regulatory approval before selling them to consumers but did not, and instead “concocted a scheme” to sell them as cosmetics to avoid regulatory requirements.

“Even though the Enhancement Serums are unapproved drugs that should never have been available for sale to consumers, Grande Cosmetics unlawfully sold hundreds of thousands of units of the Enhancement Serums to California consumers at around $65-$125 apiece,” the lawsuit says.

In the class action, Mandel says the adverse side effects caused by the active drug ingredient is material information that consumers need to know.

“Grande Cosmetics omitted the above-described material information with the knowledge that its omissions would mislead and deceive consumers,” according to the lawsuit.

Mandel wants to represent anyone else who has purchased the serums in California and is suing for violations of state business and advertising laws. She seeks certification of the class, restitution, damages, enjoinment, legal fees and costs, interest and a jury trial.

In October, Grande Cosmetics was hit with a separate class action lawsuit in California where lead Plaintiff Genna Ribak made the same claims as Mandel. Ribak argues the serums should be labeled as drugs, saying she was unaware that any of the serums she purchased contained ingredients that could be associated with serious and undisclosed side effects.

  1. Alice says:

I started using GrandeLash a year or so ago. I was thrilled with the results – longer, thicker lashes – but noticed some irritation like itchiness and redness. It went away, but then I began to experience dry eye and in the past three months, began getting styes. :( Not I have a lump in the middle of my lower left lift that I can feel and see.

  2. Kelly Novak says:

Started using Grande Lash about 6 weeks ago and my eyesight consistently got worse and I saw double. I went to my Opthomologist who could see no reason why my eyesight worsened. Then it dawned on me…. THE GRANDE LASH. I stopped using it yesterday and am hoping against all hope that my eyesight will correct itself. I would like to join this class action lawsuit. 6/13/23

  4. Laura Murphy says:

I have been using Grande-Lash intermittently over 3-4 years. I experienced double vision 2 years ago and stopped it. This time I’ve used it for 3 weeks and now experiencing intermittent visual distortions of my peripheral vision. It’s only occurring in the Left eye. I’m a registered nurse and these symptoms mimic a stroke/CVA. This is cause for concern. The disturbance only lasted a few minutes. This is very disturbing that cosmetic companies do this without any thought of harm to consumers. Anyone else have visual disturbances!?

  6. Bethany says:

I started this product, along with the Grande lash conditioner, only a week or so ago, and already have a lot of irritation in and around my eyes. Before purchasing, I had read through the product FAQs on Ulta.com which denied that this product discolors irises. I will be discontinuing these products and seeing if I can return them based on the false advertising.

What the heck man I just purchased more eye lash serum last week from Sephora and just thought my cloudy eye was a necessary evil for long lashes. I been using the grande lash for about a year or so and it’s a slow process but it has been working but I get a cloudy halo in my eyes. Sooooo, this is not normal???

  8. Chelsey says:

I am an esthetician and have been using grande lash since 2017. I knew that irritation could happen when first using the lash serum and then it would subside. I started noticing blurred vision within the first month or 2 of using the product… a few years had passed as I put off the issue as getting older (am currently 34 not old yet) I don’t have eye issues and never have. 2020 I noticed walking in the mornings and felt as if something was scratching my upper part of my eye. Nothing was ever in my eye I felt a hard lump on the upper eyelid mid section. Flipped my eye lid up and there was a lump. About the size of 2 to 3mm. Since then I had quick using any thing around my eyes and it has gone down to maybe 1mm and doesn’t irritate me like it used to. Side note. I do not were makep of any kind, liner or mascara. I do experience blurred vision once in awhile still. I theorized to myself the possibility of grande lash serum and brushed it to the side… then saw this. I am one who normally does there do diligence in learning researching and defining what ingredients do and safety concerns.. some how this slipped through my cracks. I will no longer be reccomending these products. Please add me.
