Plaintiff Michael R., individually and as an estate administrator for the now deceased plaintiff Phyllis R., has initiated a baby powder cancer lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson. This lawsuit was filed due to Phyllis’s diagnosis of ovarian cancer.
The talcum powder cancer lawsuit says that prolonged and regular exposure to the talcum powder contained in the Shower to Shower and Johnson & Johnson baby powder products directly and proximately caused her diagnosis of ovarian cancer.
The plaintiff has initiated this lawsuit against the defendants due to their allegedly willful, wrongful and negligent conduct associated with the manufacture, design, connection, packaging, and testing of the baby powder and Shower to Shower products.
As argued in the baby powder cancer lawsuit, Phyllis was born in 1932 and used Johnson & Johnson baby powder and Shower to Shower products throughout her entire life.
On Sept. 20th, 2016, Phyllis R. was diagnosed with ovarian cancer following several procedures that were carried out on Sept. 16th, including and operative laparoscopy.
Michael says the decedent passed away on May 12, 2017 due to complications with her metastatic ovarian cancer. A growing number of plaintiffs have taken it upon themselves to file a cancer lawsuit after a person who was exposed to this with application in the genital area developed a severe and life changing diagnosis of cancer allegedly due to baby powder.
According to the American Cancer Society, talc is a mineral that contains magnesium, oxygen and silicon. It helps to reduce friction and absorbs moisture, making it a popular consumer choice for preventing rashes and keeping skin dry.
However, many concerns have been raised in academic and medical studies about a possible connection between cancer and the use of talcum powder, such as whether or not women who apply baby powder often in their genital area have a higher risk of ovarian cancer.
In addition to these academic studies, a Reuters investigation highlights that thousands of lawsuits have already been lodged against Johnson & Johnson, claiming that the talcum powder caused cancer.
Despite this, Johnson & Johnson still argues that their product is pure and safe. However, this Reuters investigation found that internal documents to the company show that the baby powder could have even been tainted with asbestos, a carcinogen, and that Johnson & Johnson knew this information but failed to warn the public or regulators about it.
Ovarian cancer is often referred to as a silent killer because it can come with no symptoms at all. Regular screening and reporting any unexpected symptoms can help to get a physician’s attention to an early diagnosis. Weight loss, fatigue and loss of appetite are some of the common signs that a woman might be suffering from ovarian cancer.
The Baby Powder Lawsuit is Case No. 6:19-cv-06034-EAW in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York.
