Major baby food makers, including Gerber, Beech-Nut, Nurture, and Hain Celestial Group, are facing scrutiny over potential arsenic in their rice cereal products, according to a Thursday announcement by the New York attorney general office.
The probe comes in the wake of a congressional report that revealed potentially high levels of toxins in baby food made by most major brands. New York Attorney General Letitia James announced that she will be investigating whether the arsenic levels in rice cereal, another popular baby food, is higher than permitted under state law.
James also said that her office will look into the baby food makers’ advertising claims.
“No child should be exposed to toxic substances in their food,” said James in her announcement Thursday. “Baby food manufacturers have a legal and moral obligation to ensure the safety of their products, and provide peace-of-mind to the parents who rely on their products every day.”
The announcement cites concerns about the exposure of infants and young children to arsenic and other toxins.
“Continued exposure can affect a child’s brain development, behavior, and intelligence quotient (IQ) in the long-term,” says the Thursday statement issued by the office of the attorney general.
Baby food makers are still facing criticism after the House Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy issued a report alleging that baby food made by many popular brands contains toxic metals.
Beech-Nut, Earth’s Best, Gerber and HappyBaby are also facing a lawsuit filed by parents who claim that the metal contamination in the baby food led to the development of autism in their children. Indeed, a slew of litigation has been filed against other baby food makers, including Walmart, Plum Organics, and Nurture.
The US Food and Drug Administration has also released a plan to reduce the levels of lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury found in baby foods.
