2014-2016 Nissan Rogue CVT transmissions defective, says class action lawsuit

A group of Nissan Rogue CVT owners have come together to file a class action lawsuit against the carmaker over an alleged transmission defect that causes the vehicles to shudder and shake.

Lead plaintiffs, Teresa Stringer, Karen Brooks and William Papania, say the defect affects vehicles with model years of 2014 through 2016. In addition to the shaky ride, the cost of repairing the defect is “exorbitant,” allege the plaintiffs. They say that Nissan is well aware of the problem in the CVT’s transmission, but has failed to adequately address it.

One of the plaintiffs, Teresa Stringer, says she purchased a new 2015 Nissan Rogue CVT in Alabama, but ran into acceleration problems just two years later. According to the class action lawsuit, the Rogue ran at a high RPM and revved excessively, but failed to accelerate. Stringer says the vehicle shuddered, jerked, and lurched excessively while she drove at highway speeds.

“The CVT Defect has been documented to occur without warning during vehicle operation and poses an extreme and unreasonable safety hazard to drivers, passengers and pedestrians for obvious reasons,” states the lawsuit. “These safety hazards include being unable to maintain the proper speed to integrate seamlessly into the flow of traffic, especially on highways or freeways, putting drivers at risk of being rear ended or otherwise causing an accident unless they pull off the road.”

The class action lawsuit cites consumer complaints made to the National Highway Transportation Safety Authority (NHTSA), asserting that these in addition to the carmaker’s own testing should have brought the defect to light in 2013. Nissan also issued several technical service bulletins to dealerships about the alleged Rogue CVT transmission defect. However, the plaintiffs say that Nissan chose to conceal the dangerous transmission issues from consumers.

The plaintiffs seek to represent a nationwide class of 2014 through 2016 Nissan Rogue CVT owners and lessees, along with several state subclasses. They’re seeking damages, along with reimbursement for repairs and other expenses related to the alleged defect on behalf of all Class Members.

I own a 2014 Nissan Maxima and the CVT Transmission started acting up in 2022. I took it to a Nissan dealer and they told me it needed to be replaced with a cost of $7000. I feel that Nissan knew they were selling defaulted transmissions and continued selling cars with these defaults. I should be reimbursed for paying to fix a problem that the knew about.

  4. Ismail Morgan says:

I had a 2013 Nissan rogue and the transmission started jerking and overheating and shutting down ON THE FREEWAY!! Car had only 115000 miles on it when this happened.

  5. Sylvia Castellanos says:

2015 Nissan Rogue with 116,000 miles CVT Transmission failure. Traveling through Texas, it just kept jerking and slowing down. Finely pulled over and picked up by tow truck, this was in November 2022. Mechanic having problem on shipment and delivery. Delivery problem because of COVID and truck drivery delivery to Auto Parts. Finally repaired April 2023. A whole year and half to pay and get meanfull transportation to keep my jobs. I really was relying on this vehicle, never expected of not having any transportation. Also keeping up on payments and car insurance, and being able to drive my Nissan.
My mechanic replaced transmission at a cost of $6000.00

  6. Rob DeLorie says:

2015 Nissan Rouge Select 99k miles, CVT is beginning to fail, triggers the check engine light, have had the fluid changed as scheduled and maintained the vehicle well. Transmission shop says it’s a design failure by Nissan and a very common problem.

  7. Kristen Schultz says:

I have a 2008 Nissan Rogue that has a history of jerking and shaking. I have replaced control arms, axles, bearings multiple times. After the last repair, diagnosed control arm, after it was replaced it continued to shake, mainly when making turns. Recently the shifter cable just fell off within a week of repair and PA state inspection. I had to pay for a tow after paying $1000 for NISSAN repair that didn’t fix the problem. Nissan Service Technicians do not drive the cars on the road to understand the issues, they just put them on a lift and spin the wheels. They don’t want to acknowledge this issue. I have all 15 years of service records. I demanded to speak with the Service Manager and will provide them with a spreadsheet of this chronic recurring defect.

2015 Nissan Rogue with 54185 miles CBT transmission failure.
Dealership replaced transmission at a cost of $6290.21.
Total rip off when considering that they knew about the problem since they failed to install a Transmission cooler and did not issue a recall to install one that could have prevented premature failure.
Yes, I would like to join this class action suit.

  9. Gail Eugene says:

I have a Nissan Sentra 2018 not driving too well and I feel it’s because of the transmission. I can’t afford to even get it looked at. Help me to find out if my car is part of the settlement. I had paperwork about this but I can’t find the paperwork and don’t know what to do.

  10. Suzanne Timmons says:

My 2016 Nissan Rogue started with a whining sound. I took it to the dealer and they confirmed that the transmission was failing. They want $6400 to fix it. Based on all the comments I’ve seen, it appears to be a design flaw in the CVT and thousands of CVTs are failing. Nissan should be held accountable for poor quality and design.
