A Nissan Altima owners claim that 2013 through 2018 models of the popular vehicle come with defective low-beam headlights that are so dim they cannot safety drive during the nighttime.

Lead plaintiffs, Rafeal Suarez, Daisy Gonzalez, and Richard Byrd, filed the class action lawsuit in Tennessee federal court on behalf of those who owned or leased a model year 2013 through 2018 Nissan Altima. They say that the vehicles contain a defect in the headlamp that causes them to become dull, limiting light output, resulting in dim headlights.

The plaintiffs each say they have limited their nighttime driving due to the alleged vehicle safety defect and they would not have purchased or paid as much for their Nissan Altimas had they known of the problem.

The class action lawsuit also points to complaints by other Nissan Altima owners who say they have been pulled over by police officers at night due to their dim headlights.

Nissan has been aware of the dim headlight problem in Altima vehicles since 2013, claim the plaintiffs, but the automaker refuses to do anything about the issue.

Nissan has refused to provide free replacement headlamps to Class Members,” alleges the class action lawsuit. “Class Vehicle owners and lessees who take their Altimas to Nissan dealerships are usually charged for costly replacements because remedying the Defect requires replacement of the entire headlamp assembly.”

Headlights in the Nissan Altima begin dimming within just a few years of purchase, say the plaintiffs. The problem cannot be fixed by removing haze or replacing the reflector cup. Instead, the entire headlamp assembly must be replaced, claims the class action lawsuit.

Repairing the defectively dim headlights is costly, claim the plaintiffs who say repairs can total as much as $1,200 for a single pair of lights. Further, the headlights can still experience dimming after repair.

Thousands of other Nissan Altima owners and lessees have complained of the defectively dim headlights, says the class action, which points to a number of reports made to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

The class action lawsuit accuses Nissan of failing to address the defectively dim headlights in its 2013 through 2018 Altima vehicles. The plaintiffs are seeking to represent a nationwide Class of Altima owners and lessees, as well as California, Florida, and Ohio subclasses, and want to assess damages, as well as attorney and court fees against Nissan.

  1. Amy Garcia says:

I took my 2013 Nissan due to the Headlight settlement at the beginning of April and I am still waiting for headlights to come in.

  2. Janice Ellingsworth says:

I have a 2014 and have had to replace the bulbs several times thinking it was them. I also got a headlight restoration job done and it still didn’t help. It’s scary to drive at night time.

    1. Aaron says:

This is a joke my headlights are so low that we have to drive with the brights on at night just to illuminate the signs. In March I took my car to the dealership and I am supposed to get new headlights. Yet here I am with dim lights and no end in sight. My dealership has no idea when nissan will supply replacement headlights. This is ridiculous waiting 4+ months with no end in sight. My 2015 nissan Altimas headlights started dimming after 18 months. I complained they new this was an issue and have no availability to supply headlight to the vehicles that need them.

  3. Kim Kendrick says:

I have a 2016 Nissan Altima and I had to pay a lot of money out of pocket to have mine replaced. I took it to the nissan dealership where I bought my car but they said they wouldn’t be covered under this settlement. I don’t know why because my lights were so dim I hardly ever drove at night. When I did, I always drive with my bright lights on to be able to see. I got pulled over by the police one night because I was driving with my brights on, but like I explained to them. Without them on you can’t see nothing. It is dangerous. So would you rather I drive with my bright lights on or have an accident because I can’t see?

  6. THOMAS A DURBIN says:

I have a 2015 altima and the headlights are very dim

  7. Clementine Johnson says:

I have a 2015 Nissan Altima and it is extremely hard trying to drive and see at night. Lord don’t let it be raining and it be dark then that you might end up in a ditch somewhere or in a accident. Nissan should replace the issue with my car as well as others. So many people can end up hurt from these light issues. I fear to drive at night & when I turn on my high beams it affects other people driving. I feel that the dealership need to pay for all car issues and next time when they build a car they will do it the correct way!

  8. Mariah Rocha says:

Yes, I own a Nissan Altima 2015 I am constantly switching to high beam light, because of the dim low beam light are so dangerous. Also, driving with he high beam are as dangerous because get get yell at by people driving on the opposite direction. Nissan should fix this issue with all these models. I won’t even dive at night because it is so dangerous. Dealer want to charge 1900 dollars to replace Headlight Assembly.

    1. Whitney Hoover says:

Yes I have a 2013 Nissia altima and the dim headlights dont work i mean they do come on but it don’t project enough light onto the road to be able to drive with them on dim i replaced the bulbs and the projector and well it didn’t fix it i was told i would have to replace the whole assembly

  9. Noreen says:

2014 Nissan Altima lights are extremely dim I have to use my high beams at night!

  10. Richard Hill says:

We bought my daughter a 2014 Nissan Altima to replace her car that was totaled, the first time she drove it was at time and quickly realized there was a problem. Called the dealership because they supposedly did a safety check, but because we bought it as is they would do nothing
