mazda logoThe daytime running lights in the 2016 Mazda CX-5 burn out prematurely, according to a Mazda class action lawsuit lodged in a California federal court.

Lead plaintiff Jami Kidd alleges that since at least 2014, Mazda knew of a significant defect that causes the daytime running lights in their vehicles to burn out far sooner than expected.

The plaintiff says the defect presents a safety hazard to Mazda drivers and other motorists.

“The safety benefits of daytime running lights are well recognized,” notes the complaint. “Studies have shown that the presence of daytime running lights reduces daytime multiple-vehicle crashes, especially head-on and front-corner collisions where vehicle conspicuity is a concern, by as much as ten percent.”

According to the Mazda class action lawsuit, Kidd purchased a 2016 Mazda CX-5 from a dealership in April 2015. The plaintiff says that within the first year of her car purchase, the daytime running lights on her Mazda burnt out. When she asked the dealership to repair them, they allegedly told her the lights were not covered by the warranty and would cost up to $1,500 to fix.

Kidd says she decided to forgo the repair due to the cost and, one year later, the lights on the other side of her Mazda went out as well.

The plaintiff alleges that she would not have purchased or paid as much for her Mazda vehicle had she known the running lights would burn out prematurely.

The Mazda class action lawsuit claims that the car maker knew of the defect through a number of sources before customers and the public could know, including through “pre-production testing, pre-production design failure mode and analysis data, production design failure mode and analysis data, early consumer complaints made exclusively to Mazda’s network of dealers and directly to Mazda, aggregate warranty data compiled from Mazda’s network of dealers, testing conducted by Mazda in response to consumer complaints, and repair order and parts data received by Mazda from Mazda’s network of dealers.”

The plaintiff points to numerous customer complaints about the Mazda running lights defect. Despite this information, alleges the complaint, Mazda concealed this information.

The Mazda class action lawsuit seeks to represent a nationwide Class of 2016 Mazda CX-5 owners, along with a subclass of Illinois residents. The plaintiff accuses Mazda of fraud, breach of warranty, and fraudulent concealment.

The Mazda class action lawsuit is seeking a warranty extension to cover the running lights defect, reimbursement to Class Members for money spent repairing the defect, and damages.

  1. Alex Wallace says:

I own a Mazda 2016 CX5 with ~32 miles and the passenger side LED daytime running light is out. A repair requires a full headlight refresh and costs over $1,200, since the LED running lights are not replacable.

I would like to be included in any class action suit.

  2. Lauren Fleischer says:

I have a Mazda 2016 CX5 with 37,365 miles and the passenger side daytime running light is out. They are estimating the repair at $1200.

Please add me to the class action.

    Thank you,

    Lauren Fleischer

My right side DRL has been flickering since last year this time at around 30k and just after 3 years. Very frustrating and dangerous since the flickering looks like a turn signal to some people coming from side streets. Have had 3 different people try to pull out in front of me as they thought I might be turning.

  4. Kris D says:

I have already replaced one unit on my CX 5 Grand Touring (2016) with the LED running lights flickering and then eventually failing – and now my other headlight is doing the same thing and will require replacement (parts labor approx $1200). I think this must be a defect – I only have 54k miles, and other than this headlight defect, have no complaints about the vehicle.

  5. Dakota Jobe says:

    Hi
    I also have a Mazda CX-5 touring 2016.

My headlight (the little lights around the headlight). When’s out in April 2019. Mazda did replace it…then 6 weeks later, the other headlight failed…My 5 year protection ended on May 12, so it was up to my insurance co today above my $100 deductible…
The whole headlight is a single unit, hi beams, low beams and the string of small led lights all in one…

  6. Julie says:

2016 CX-5 GT, drivers side DRL is out for about 6 months now. Currently have 55k miles. Quote from the dealership is about $1400.

  7. Tammy Brant says:

I just purchased a used 2014 Mazda CX-5 in June of 2019. The driver’s side headlight burned out just before Christmas. Please add me to this case.

    1. Tammy Brant says:

I would also like to comment that I previously owned a Mazda6 and had the same experience with headlights burning out prematurely. My only complaint with Mazda vehicles.

  8. Joe C says:

2016 CX-5 Grand Touring (paid $1500 for the LED Daytime Running Light package)
Passenger side DRL went out at 35k miles.
Took it in and was told they could fix for $1300. Declined.
Wrote a letter to corporate North America 6 months ago, but received no response.

  9. Cristina Delgadillo says:

I have a 2012 Mazda CX-7. I have to replace my headlights once or twice a year! They say it’s normal. I have owned other vehicles and never had a light go out!

  10. Mike says:

Same thing on my 2016. Dealer replaced the drivers side under warranty. Four months later, warranty expired, passenger side goes out.
Dealer pays half the cost, I’m out $600.
