Dark silver Jeep Compass - 2018 Jeep Compass

UPDATE: On July 27, 2020, the Jeep Compass class action lawsuit was dismissed.

A recent oil consumption class action lawsuit claims that the 2018 Jeep Compass consumes an excessive amount of oil.

Plaintiff Thomas Weiner says he purchased a 2018 Jeep Compass believing that the vehicle would be safe and free of defects. Unfortunately, after two years and 25,000 miles on the vehicle, Weiner allegedly started to experience stalling while operating the vehicle normally.

In September 2019, while driving to work, Weiner allegedly attempted to make a right turn but was surprised when his vehicle’s emergency brake engaged, his engine stalled and he lost the ability to accelerate. He says he had to drift his vehicle to the side of the road to avoid a collision. Allegedly, only after the engine stall did his vehicle indicate that it had critically low oil.

Later that day, Weiner’s 2018 Jeep Compass reportedly stalled once more without warning. This time, like before, the oil pressure warning light allegedly failed to engage before the stalling incident.

As a result of the stalls, Weiner claims he brought his vehicle to his dealership six times for the issue. Each time, he was allegedly forced to pay for an engine oil refill and drive another 1,000 miles to test the issue. According to the class action lawsuit, the 2018 Jeep Compass was burning through a quart of oil every 500 miles.

Engine oil cap - 2018 Jeep Compass“Plaintiff’s engine oil had descended below the threshold Defendant designates as safe, rendering his vehicle at risk of sudden engine stalling without warning,” the Jeep Compass class action lawsuit alleges.

“Exacerbating the danger is the fact that Plaintiff’s Oil Pressure Warning Light and other engine oil monitors fail to engage prior to engine stalling and vehicle inoperability.”

Only on Weiner’s sixth visit to the dealership did the company authorize an engine replacement after the dealership allegedly acknowledged that the vehicle’s engine suffered from an oil consumption defect. In February, he reportedly had his engine replaced.

According to Weiner, the oil consumption defect can be traced to the engines found in some Jeep vehicles – the 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir II Engines. A defect in these engines allegedly cause vehicles to consume oil at a “furious pace.”

The Jeep class action lawsuit argues that Weiner and other consumers have been forced to pay out of pocket for repairs and have been repeatedly inconvenienced due to the defective engines. Even worse, the defect allegedly puts drivers and passengers at risk for collisions if a vehicle stalls during normal use.

“This defect results in critically low engine oil levels, and causes vehicles installed with Defendant’s 2.4L Tigershark engines to stall and lose power without warning,” the 2018 Jeep Compass class action lawsuit alleges.

Weiner seeks to represent a Class of consumers who purchased or leased vehicles equipped with a 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir II Engine. He also seeks to represent a state subclass of the same consumers from Illinois.

Due to the alleged defect in 2018 Jeep Compass vehicles and other vehicles equipped with the same engine, Weiner and other consumers have allegedly been financial damaged. The Jeep Compass class action contends that suffered damages include overpayment for vehicles, out of pocket expenses of frequent oil changes, increased service visits, costs of future repairs and diminished vehicle values.

To compensate Weiner and the proposed Class for their alleged damages, the 2018 Jeep Compass class action lawsuit seeks injunctive relief, actual damages, compensatory damages, punitive damages, interest, court costs and attorneys’ fees.

This is not the first time Fiat Chrysler has faced legal action over oil consumption in its vehicles. In last month’s legal news, plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit against the company taking issue with the same Tigershark engine. In May, another class action lawsuit challenged the same issue.

Plaintiffs in these cases argued that several vehicles are equipped with the defective engine, including: 2014 – 2020 Jeep Cherokee;  2017 – 2020 Jeep Compass; 2015 – 2020 Jeep Renegade; 2015 – 2016 Chrysler 200; 2013 – 2016 Dodge Dart; and 2016 – 2020 Fiat 500X models.

2018 Jeep Compass. Consumes a quart of oil every two weeks under normal driving conditions (commute 30 miles each way per day +/- 15 miles).. Has stopped without warning while driving if oil level gets too low. I found this out after two months into a fresh oil change. About 4.5 (out of 5.5) quarts gone..Didn’t make sense since no leaks and no smoke to account for the quick loss of oil.. but now confirmed.. Creates a dangerous situation depending where it happens. This is an unbelievable defect, shame on you Chrysler/Jeep how you push such a product onto unsuspecting customers. There should be legal consequences for the manufacturer. No excuse.

2018 Compass with the same issue. I hope the warranty covers this.

I just bought a 2019 Compass w 43000 miles. Checked oil the day we bought it… full. Checked again 500 miles later , a quart low. Hmmmm . Sounds like the same issue as 2018.
Going next week to start an oil consumption test.

I have the same issue with my 2019 Jeep Compass that I bought at 45,000 miles and by 49,000 it stalled out on me and was empty. They started an oil consumption test on my car and now have claimed “it is functioning normal and there is nothing wrong with it”. I am so distraught and upset as I am paying out a loan for this car and it all feels like a waste.

I have a 2018 Jeep compass. This has happened to me on several occasions over the last year. I have been to the dealerships and they recommend and oil change, a new filter. Again. And again. Today, I pulled on to the expressway. Low oil pressure light came on and my car died on me. 65 mph. On an entrance ramp. Multiple cars. I was almost hit, almost caused an accident. Every time I have attempted to fix this issue, it’s “try this” or “try that”

Having the exact same issues with my Jeep. I am in Illinois. Does anyone know of a lawyer I can contact about this?

  6. Melanie Kalinowski says:

I’m experiencing this same problem. My engine stalled again today and when I had my oil checked it was empty. I use the high grade oil and I was under the moles it’s needed to be changed.

  7. Brittney Lewis says:

I have a 2018 Jeep Compass with this exact issue. Shuts off in the middle of the road and the park brake engages. No lights or indications there is low oil/pressure. I have two young kids and it’s dangerous! I got an oil change mid September and 3 weeks later, I made a turn and the vehicle would not accelerate.

    1. Nikki says:

I’m having the same issue for about 2 years not. I’ve taken my car to two different dealerships now and I’m not getting anywhere. I called Chrysler corporate and they aren’t doing much either so I had no choice but to get in touch with a lemon law lawyer for help. In the process now to help, I have a 5 month old and I need a safe and reliable car.

  8. Nala - NJ says:

I bought my 2018 compass march 2018. Had minor accident and when at shop they checked everything and noted oil was 4 quarts low. No signs of leeks. It stalled while my daughter was turning at a traffic light, no dash lights came on when it happened. I remembered about body shop said the oil was low before so when she got home I checked and again 4 quarts low. Wasn’t long after that I got a neon pink RECALL notice for jeep and that it was VERY IMPORTANT to bring it in asap! This was right as pandemic was starting so it took forever to get appt. It was supposedly a programming issue and was fixed. So far no issues but I get oil changed every 3000 miles not to worry or have to keep buying oil. I won’t be surprised if more vehicles have this then they know!!

  9. Thomas Newsome says:

The same my jeep will die and not start back it says low oil pressure I can get my oil changed and not have anything on the dip stick in 2 weeks it dies on left turns also it has left me stranded several times and not to mention the oil 0-20 is not cheep

  10. Jody Sutters says:

I bought a 2018 jeep compass and dealership changed oil first time and with in 2000 miles 2 quart of oil low. Dealership I bought it at also sold me a 10 year 150,00 mile warranty on vehicle. Took it in told me it was normal and with a payment and cost of oil change and added oil cost it is a big problem for me being on a fixed income. Why can’t all these rich asshole be held accountable for the junk cheaper parts they buy out of wherever and stick in these motors and sale us a vehicle that is not worth the price seeing it is cheaply built and they don’t hold up to their standards
