jeep wranglerFiat Chrysler Automobiles faces a class action lawsuit alleging Jeep Wranglers are affected by a “death wobble.”

Lead plaintiff Clair Reynolds claims model-year 2015-2018 Jeep Wranglers contain a defective front axle and dampening system that causes the steering wheel to shake “violently,” often while vehicles are being driven at highway speeds.

“This phenomenon is referred to as the Jeep ‘Death Wobble,’” according to the Jeep class action lawsuit. “The ‘Death Wobble’ is the seemingly uncontrollable side-to-side shaking of a Jeep’s front-end steering components and — by extension — its steering wheel.”

“The ‘Death Wobble’ makes the Jeep difficult to control for the operator, including a safety risk to the occupants and others on the road, and simulates sudden front end failure.”

According to the Jeep Wrangler class action, the carmaker has been aware of the defect after numerous complaints about Jeep owners’ death wobble experiences were posted online.

Indeed, the Jeep class action lawsuit notes that the online forums about the death wobble recommend neither hard braking or accelerating, but to bring the vehicle to a controlled stop on the shoulder of the road.

Fiat Chrysler refuses to acknowledge the problem and fails to provide an adequate fix, says the plaintiff.

“When owners and lessees of the Jeep Vehicles return to their dealership to complain about the Death Wobble, Jeep offers to replace the steering damper if the vehicle is under warranty,” states the Jeep class action lawsuit. “But, as widely reported and experienced by Plaintiff here, that is simply a band-aid fix that will only temporarily conceal the problem. The ‘Death Wobble’ will ultimately return and can only be remedied by substantial revisions and repair to the suspension.”

Further, the carmaker has failed to warn the public and current and future Jeep owners about the alleged defect, according to the Jeep class action.

The plaintiff seeks to represent a nationwide class of 2015-2018 Jeep Wrangler current and former owners and lessees.

The Jeep class action lawsuit demands that Fiat Chrysler implement a buyback of 2015 through 2018 Jeep Wranglers and that the car company absorb the costs of depreciation and lost value due to the alleged defect.

Further, the plaintiff wants reimbursement for herself and the proposed Class for any repairs made on the defective vehicles. Fiat Chrysler should also provide class members temporary replacement vehicles, the complaint says.

The plaintiff is represented by E. Powell Miller, Sharon S. Almonrode and William Kalas of The Miller Law Firm PC; Simon B. Paris, Patrick Howard and Charles J. Kocher of Saltz Mongeluzzi Barrett & Bendesky PC; Joseph G. Sauder, Matthew D. Schelkopf and Joseph B. Kenney of Sauder Schelkopf; and Daniel E. Gustafson, David A. Goodwin and Raina C. Borrelli of Gustafson Gluek PLLC.

The Jeep Wrangler class action lawsuit is Reynolds v. FCA US LLC, Case No. 2:19-cv-11745-AC-EAS, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

      Add me please.
      I had a 2019 Sahara
At 16k I received a recall notice. For.the death wobble.
They scheduled me for a repair 2 minths out
Then it happened to me twice in one night. If I had been any weaker I would be dead!
I had to hold onto that wheel w all my strength while also trying to brake lightly as braking hard only made it worse.
Luckily it was late at night, after playing a gig, so there were not many cars on the road.
Also. I do not drink and drive. And. I was not drinking at all.
The steering wheel shook so violently that my atms hurt for days trying to hold it back. To let go was sudden death.
I lost 16k on that car selling it after only 9 or 10 months because I was afraid to drive it on the expressway ever again.
And because of recall and pending lawsuit no one was buying them.

Please add me to the lawsuit! I have a 2017 Rubicon and I’ve experienced the wobble at 45-55 mph and after hitting a bump while going 70 mph

I leased a 2019 wrangler unlimited with the “Death Wobble “ it’s currently at the dealership in Meadville Pa. I been dealing with Jeep directly who ran me in circles and will not admit to anything knowing this is the third time it’s been in for the same problem. When I get it back I’m driving it back to the dealership in N. Huntington Pa. and handing over the keys. I have eighteen months left on the lease however I value the lives of my family more than my excellent credit rating. I encourage everyone else to do the same and that will get someone’s attention other than a potential obituary.

Please add me. I have a leased 2018 Jeep Wrangler and have experienced death wobble four times. They have installed two new dampers and insist the problem is fixed each time. I’ve told them I’ve lost complete confidence in owning a wrangler and want out of my lease. I’ve told them I would be willing to transfer the lease to a Cherokee to stay with the Jeep product. I felt that offer was more than fair considering what I’ve been through with this company. They told me, unfortunately, I leased the vehicle and will have to keep it for the duration of the lease. This Issue should not occur four times in less than 18 months. I’m hoping you can help me with this.

Corporate refunded one of my lease payments after many calls and hours of contacting them for assistance with the dealership. They refunded one of my lease payments and considered my case closed.

I just received a new recall notice about one of the glass panels. It may fall out while driving at highway speeds.

  5. Dale W House says:

Please add me to suit as I have a 2015 jeep wrangler unlimited oscar mike.

I have a 2019 Wrngler and have experienced the death wobble on numerous occasions because I drive over several railroad tracks on my way to work. It has also caused me to loss control when it occurred going around a curve, thank goodness I did not crash. I would like to be added to the lawsuit

  7. Rosalie Helsel says:

I have a 2019 Wrangler Sport. It was recalled back in August for a steering damper replacement. The death wobble has happened on the freeway twice since then. It’s very scary. Please add me to the class action.

  8. Chera Brewer says:

How do I join this lawsuit? I have a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. I have complained about death wobble multiple times. It happened again last night while is was doing 70 mph down the interstate. I was so scared! How do I get help with this?

How do I join the class action lawsuit against Jeep for the death wobble? I have a 2018 Wrangler and have complained multiple times and Jeep isn’t fixing anything. It happened to me last night doing 70 mph down the interstate. So very scary! I need help with this problem!

  10. Cheryl Gildner says:

My 2008 JK Unlimited X has had death wobble from the time I bought it. I have replaces all steering and front end components, new tires, alignment and heavy duty dual steering stabilizers (about $3,000 total) It gets better for a short while but comes back just as bad as before. Last week I was pulling my utility trailer and hit a bump in the road, the shaking was so bad we were almost in an accident because I had to hit the breaks so quickly to regain control. I love my Jeep but there has to be a better fix than what has been proposed.
