Gray truck against blue skyAccording to a recent report from Reuters, Toyota recently reached a $3.4 billion settlement to resolve allegations of defective rusting undercarriage of various pickups.

The Toyota rusted frame settlement will resolve a class action lawsuit involving numerous Toyota truck owners, each of whom alleges the undercarriage of their trucks severely rusted.

The settlement terms pertain to 1.5 million 2005-2010 Toyota Tacomas, 2005-2008 Sequoias, and 2007-2008 Tundras, but rusted undercarriages have also been reportedly plaguing Toyota 4Runner owners. Here are some frequently asked questions that Toyota 4Runner owners may have:

Has there been a Toyota 4Runner rusted frame recall?

At this point in time, there has been no Toyota 4runner rusted frame recall but owners of vehicle models 2005 to present should be vigilant for any signs of undercarriage rust. If left untreated, the rust could eventually break off and make the vehicle too dangerous to drive.

Has the Toyota 4Runner rusting problem been noticed by authorities?

Toyota 4Runner frame rust problems have been brought to the attention of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), after receiving a report stating that a 4Runner owner complained the steering and suspension system had separated due to the severe rusting on the frame.

According to CarComplaints, the NHTSA states that it will either grant or deny the petition to investigate after it reviewing over 520,000 model year 2002-2006 Toyota 4Runners.

Has there been any legal action regarding the Toyota 4Runner rusted frame issue?

While there has been no Toyota 4Runner rusted frame recall, there has been a class action lawsuit filed describing this problem. Plaintiff Gary W. alleges his Toyota 4Runner experiences severe rusting due to being made with defective rust protection, which reportedly made his vehicle “unsafe to drive and a hazard on the roadways.”

The lawsuit points out that the rusting problem affects 2005-2011 Toyota 4Runners, 2005-2010 Toyota Tacomas, 2007-2008 Toyota Tundras and 2005-2008 Toyota Sequoias.

The 4Runner Toyota rust defect class action lawsuit ultimately argues the car company knew that these vehicles were vulnerable to rusting, but allegedly failed to warn consumers.

Furthermore, the claim points out that Toyota had set up a compensation program to help owners deal with truck rust problems on other trucks, but this did not include the 4Runner.

What were the terms of the class action settlement?

Along with the $3.4 billion settlement, the terms state that Toyota will pay for all vehicle inspections and replacing frames on affected trucks. Toyota will reach out to owners by mail, will send notices to publications, and through various sources of media.

Has Toyota had previous problems with undercarriage rusting in other cars?

It is important to note that this is not the first time Toyota has encountered problems with rust in its pickup trucks with their 1995-2000 Toyota Tacomas.

Toyota also had to issue a recall for 2001-2003 Tundras for frame rust, with the recall resulting in a $25 million payout to Toyota from Dana, the company that supplied the allegedly defective frames.

One of the most recent recalls that Toyota issued was several years ago, which recalled their 2005-2011 Tacomas that had allegedly defective leaf springs that could rust or break.

The Toyota 4-Runner Frame Rust Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Case No. 2:18-cv-03294-RMG, in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina, Charleston Division.

I also have a 2004 Toyota 4Runner that I loved to drive. It uses no and runs excellent. I took care of the body and looks great put went for oil change the mechanic said the frame is rusted so bad that you should not drive it anywhere.

  3. Nicole says:

I own a 2011 4Runner limited and my son discovered the skid plate cover was completely rusted when he changed my oil. It was so bad he didn’t even put it back on and said it was ridiculous the dealer had said nothing about it or replaced it. He said it could have broken off and caused me to wreck. It is also not good to have nothing on there if I run over something by accident however I’ve looked everywhere online for a replacement including dealerships and come up empty. About three years ago, the dealership told me my exhaust was rusted and charged me $1200 for a new one so I’m certainly not asking them for a new one.

I purchased my 2003 Toyota 4runner late 2017 .for my family because my wife was expecting child. And at the time owned a 2001 Toyota tundra .which also had an extremely rusty frame which was replaced by Toyota in early 2013 .but what boggles my mind is that Toyota knew about the cheap steel there were using and knew that it would rust like it would to cut cost on material .and now my Toyota 4runner is undrivable because the rust has become so bad the first thing to go was the running boards then the exhaust then the core support fell off then a hole all the way down the center of the frame completely and the last time I drove it I heard some thumping in the front end thought nothing of it until I was going to do an oil change on it and when I crawled under to do so I found my thumping noise it was my swaybar it had completely fallen out of the frame on one side because the rot has become so bad.so I contacted Toyota about this issue and told me there’s nothing that they can do for me even told them my family ride’s in it all the time and still they didn’t care thanks Toyota for making no sense at all

I have a 2003 Toyato 4 runner has 171. 000 miles and the under body frame is redilulous rusted ,afraid to drive anymore. I love 4 runners vehicle’s

  6. Michelle says:

I own at 2004 4runner limited with having many more mile on the motor and transmission now deemed unsafe and un driveable due to rusted out frame!!! Told hitting a pothole could snap the frame. No recall for what they know to be faulty. Shame.

    1. Jared says:

2007 4runner Sport. 200000 miles well maintained. No rust on body frame is rusted out by rear control arms 😔

  7. Denise Seifert says:

We purchased a used 2006 Toyota 4Runner with 125,000 miles on it in October 2020. It was in great condition and did not show signs of rust. Now, less than a year later, the alternator needed to be replaced. The mechanic had it on the lift and the frame is totally rusted out. It must have been covered up at the time of the purchase less than a year ago. Took it for a frame inspection/repair and the technician advised it’s beyond the ability to repair and not safe to drive.

  8. Scott A Meury says:

99 LIMITED 4RUNNER HERE. RUSTED OUT FRAME ON BOTH SIDES . CAR SWAYS LEFT TO RIGHT AT 35 MPH. 270,000 MILES. WON’T PASS INSPECTION.

  9. Sunny says:

2004 4Runner Purchased 5/2005. Never in salt. Garaged. Tailgate rusted within a couple of years and was replaced under warranty. I called Toyota Nat’l Hdqtrs 2016 when I heard about Tacoma frames being replaced and nailed them. Rep admitted 4Runner has same frame as Tacoma and they were not doing anything for 4Runner owners. Wish I filed a suit then.

  10. Stephen Petras says:

I have a 2003 Toyota 4Runner that the frame is rusted out. The body is in great shape and the motor runs great. I am loosing the use of my truck for something you knew was wrong. I’m not considered in the recall or class action. What the hell Toyota?
