GM Chevrolet Tahoe logoA recent GM class action lawsuit claims that GMC and Chevrolet vehicles manufactured by the auto company are equipped with defective engines.

According to plaintiff Thomas Szep, GM vehicles with Generation IV 5.3 Liter V8 Vortec 5300 engines suffer from engine failure due to defects.

The defective engines allegedly consume an “abnormally and improperly high” amount of motor oil which results in low oil levels in the vehicle. This can reportedly lead to insufficient lubrication in the engine and subsequently damage engine components.

The GM class action lawsuit argues that the defect stems from insufficient piston rings in the Generation IV Vortec 5300 engines. The piston rings allegedly fail to maintain sufficient tension which results in oil leaving the crankcase too quickly.

These problems are allegedly exacerbated by GM’s Oil Life Monitoring System. This system is supposed to alert consumers about their oil levels, but reportedly fails to actually monitor the levels of oil in an engine. Instead, the system allegedly monitors engine conditions and calculates expected oil consumption.

“The result is a system that directs drivers to travel thousands of miles with inadequate engine lubricity levels, wearing out and damaging moving internal engine components – a particularly serious problem in light of the fact that the Oil Consumption Defect causes improper and excessive oil loss in each of the Class Vehicles,” the GM class action lawsuit claims.

The engine failure defect reported affects the following vehicles: 2010-2014 Chevrolet Avalanche, 2010-2012 Chevrolet Colorado, 2010-2013 Chevrolet Express, 2010-2013 Chevrolet Silverado, 2010-2014 Chevrolet Suburban, 2010-2014 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2010-2013 GMC Canyon, 2010-2013 GMC Savana, 2010-2013 GMC Sierra, 2010-2014 GMC Yukon, and 2010-2014 GMC Yukon XL.

Owners of these vehicles have allegedly left repeated complaints about the issue in online forums.

Szep says he experienced the issue with his 2011 Chevrolet Silverado. He argues that the engine defect was never disclosed to him and that he purchased the vehicle under the assumption that it would be “a reliable vehicle.” The engine defect has reportedly rendered the vehicle less valuable and less reliable, which Szep argues constitutes injury.

In his GM class action lawsuit, Szep seeks to represent a Class of current and former owners or lessees of Class vehicles that were acquired in the United States. He also seeks to represent a Class of the same consumers who purchased or leased their vehicles in Ohio.

GM has faced several engine defect class action lawsuits over the past few years. In 2017, plaintiffs filed a GM class action alleging that the some of the vehicles from the company are equipped with defective engines. These engines allegedly cause excessive oil consumption, spark plug degradation, and malfunctions in engine performance.

Szep and the proposed Class are represented by Mark A. DiCello, Justin J. Hawal, Adam J. Levitt, John E. Tangren, and Daniel R. Ferri of DiCello Levitt Gutzler LLC.

The GM Engines Class Action Lawsuit is Szep v. General Motors LLC, Case No. 1:19-cv-02858, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.

My 2010 suburban had the same type of issues. How do I join this class action?

  2. Steve J says:

Got the same issue with a 2011 Suburban. Mine has 128,000 miles on it and it’s only a matter of time before it fails. My father had GM replace his motor in a 2011 Silverado for $6500. How do we get in this class action suit.

I have a 2007 Avalanche that the engine crashed at 200,000. The dealership said there was a bulletin about a bad design where the PCV enter the valve cover. I feel that since a bulletin was issued and the design was changed that it also an admission of guilt. The original part would lead to oil lose and foul spark plugs. I just had the valve cover changed on my 2008 Avalanche at the dealership. GM needs to settle with every Avalanche owner since the 2007 model.

  4. Chuck Townsend says:

I have a 2006 Avalanche with 195k miles. Non-afm motor. Runs great. Best truck I’ve ever had. I hear constant problems about lifters. This is due to the Active Fuel Management. Bypass it or if you need an an engine buy a deleted Reman. The Non-AFM 5.3 ( 2006 and older ) best engine I’ve ever had.

I purchased a used 2012 Denali XL in 2020. 11 months lator I started having engine problems $4500 to fix cause the insurance said I was 4k over the mileage. Then 3 mnths lator I have a blown engine $5000 for a engine iv already paid but 3 months waiting to know find how the crank shafts are no longer available. It’s been all problems and now I have a huge paper weight in my drive way that I have 2 pay for for the next 2yrs.

I got my 09 1500 sierra with 82,00 miles on it. I have the oil changed every 3-4000 miles with sinthetic oil. It now has 115,000 miles on it and I need a need a new motor due to the system going down to a four cylinder when driving a distance. The first calendar goes out due to lack of oil getting to it. Now my cam is ruined n needs a new motor. Other than this problem my truck is in perfect condition.

2010 Chevrolet Silverado has engine problems. 100,000 miles and needs $7500 repair. New camshafts and lifters. Two cylinders not working per the dealership. What a waste to be ripped off like this. Plus the dash is basically falling to pieces and they want $1700 for that. We have also changed the crappy door handles so many times now it is ridiculous. We will never own another Chevrolet!

  8. Dylan Detlor says:

Got a 2008 silverado and a 2017 Sierra nothing wrong yet with the 17 but the 08 has been in the shop for lifter number 6 times with in the last year costing my wife n I (its her truck) 10k in parts and labor now im changing the engine

  9. Donald Brown says:

I alway thought GM made the best vehicles, Boy, was I wrong. I purchaced a new 2008 Avalanche . changed the oil every 3,000 to 4,000 miles with synthetic motor oil. alway let the engine warm up a little before driving. the truck was always keep in a heated climate controlled garage. I took very good care of this truck. Now I just turned over 102,000 miles and all at once I come to a stop light and the truck starts shaking. Colaped lifter, not a happy camper. Thank you very little GM

  10. Eugene Wisniewski says:

We have a 2012 GMC Sierra with engine failure on the lifters after 120000 miles.
