chevy equinox suv on road near mountainChevrolet Equinox SUVs burn through motor oil at an alarming rate causing engine damage and other serious issues, according to a class action lawsuit filed by two vehicle owners.

Plaintiffs Ellen Berman and Dayana Guach allege that their Chevy Equinoxs with a EcoTech 2.4-liter engine contain a defect that causes the SUVs to consume abnormally high amounts of oil.

In addition to burning excessive oil, the plaintiffs say their Equinox vehicles have an “Oil Pressure Warning” system that is supposed to alert drivers to low oil levels, which also fails to work.

The 2013 GMC Terrain oil consumption recall class action lawsuit claims these combined issues create considerable safety concerns both to the vehicle itself and its occupants.

“The Oil Consumption Defect is unreasonably dangerous because it can cause engine failure while the Class Vehicles are in operation at any time and under any driving conditions or speeds, thereby placing drivers, passengers, and the public at risk of accidents and injury,” the Chevy oil-guzzling class action lawsuit states.

Guach says she brought her 2013 Chevrolet Equinox in for a routine oil change in April of this year and was informed by a service technician that the vehicle was consuming oil very quickly.

The plaintiff says she also noticed at this time that she could hear a loud “ticking” noise coming from her SUV when she drove it. Allegedly, this was determined to be a spark knock causing internal engine damage.

The 2013 GMC Terrain oil consumption recall class action lawsuit states that Guach has changed her oil every 1,000 – 1,500 miles after discovering the oil consumption defect. Since April, the plaintiff says she’s brought her SUV in for an oil change 15 different times.

The plaintiffs claim that General Motors is well aware that its Chevrolet Equinox vehicles contain this defect but have not issued a recall nor have they informed SUV owners that their vehicles need a repair.

Guach says that without a recall and with no warranty coverage, she was informed that to fix the 2013 GMC Terrain oil consumption recall issue, she would need to pay $3,000.

Both Chevy Equinox owners allege that had they known of the oil consumption defect or been made aware that the Oil Pressure Warning system didn’t work, neither of them would spend $26,000+ on the SUV.

“GM kept Plaintiffs and the other Class members ignorant of vital information essential to the pursuit of their claims,” the 2012 GMC Terrain recall oil consumption class action lawsuit states. “As a result, neither Plaintiffs nor the other Class members could have discovered the defect, even upon reasonable exercise of diligence.

2013 GMC Terrain Oil Consumption Recall Settlement

In response to this class action lawsuit, General Motors has agreed to pay between $40 million and $45 million to cover the 2012 GMC Terrain recall oil consumption issue.

The GMC class action settlement was reached in April 2019 and resolves three related oil-guzzling lawsuits.

Under the terms of the settlement, SUV owners will be reimbursed for costs related to repairs on their vehicle’s piston assembly caused by the excessive oil consumption problem.

The GM settlement covers 2010 to 2013 Equinox and Terrain SUVs equipped with 2.4-liter Ecotec engines.

In addition to providing reimbursement to GMC owners, General Motors has agreed to pay $2.5 million in attorneys’ fees.

Notable GMC Defects

General Motors has faced numerous class action lawsuits this year, most notably ones that allege a Chevy Shake transmission defect.

These lawsuits claim that more than a dozen GMC vehicles are equipped with a transmission that causes them to “shake, shudder, jerk, clunk, or ‘hard shift’” when changing gears.

Those vehicles that allegedly contain the “Chevy Shake” include: 2015-2019 Chevrolet Silverado; 2017-2019 Chevrolet Colorado; 2015-2019 Chevrolet Corvette; 2016-2019 Chevrolet Camaro; 2015-2019 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV; 2016-2019 Cadillac ATS, ATS-V, CTS, CT6, and CTS-V; 2015-2019 GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL, and Yukon Denali XL; and the 2017-2019 GMC Canyon.

Berman and Guach are represented by Rachel Soffin, Gregory F. Coleman, Adam A. Edwards and Mark E. Silvey of Greg Coleman Law PC, Robert Ahdoot of Ahdoot & Wolfson PC, and Daniel K. Bryson and J. Hunter Bryson of Whitfield Bryson & Mason LLP.

The GM Chevrolet Equinox SUV Oil Consumption Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Ellen Berman, et al. v. General Motors LLC, Case No. 2:18-cv-14371, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

UPDATE: On Nov. 18, 2019, a judge in Florida federal court approved a $42 million settlement agreement which resolves three lawsuits claiming that General Motors sold vehicles with an oil consumption defect.

I have a 2014 that burns tons of oil and now I have been told that I need a new motor. How do I get help with this issue? I shouldn’t have to pay for the problem that they already knew about! I take great care of my car and always check my oil and make sure its at the mark it should be even though I never get a low oil light or service engine light to tell me it’s a problem. Very upsetting!

  2. Michael Rhodes says:

I have a 2014 equinox v6 and checked oil after 8 days oil being changed and have to add oil I want in on law suite

  3. Maria Searfoss says:

I just purchased a used 2014 Equinox, oil was low when I had it changed, two weeks after purchase. drove less than 1700 miles and it had burned 3 and 1/2 quarts of oil. It is going to be quite expensive filling it with oil every 500 miles. How can I use this lawsuit to get my vehicle serviced to correct this problem?

      1. Lisa Gilbert says:

I got a 2014 Chevy Equinox and it has been using oil and is now in the shop getting a new engine at $600O that I don’t have. I know of at least 3 other Chevy Equinox owner in the same situation. Why hasn’t there been a recall on these engines? What can we do about this?

  5. Kelly Kretchman says:

We have a 2017 equinox. Engine blew on the highway on Christmas Eve. Was a terrifying experience having our toddler in the car with extreme cold temperatures on a dangerous highway. We are still making payments on this vehicle and now have to buy a new engine?? Something is seriously wrong with these engines. This should not happen in a 2017 vehicle. I want in on this lawsuit. I’m sickened to find out there are no recalls for their poor workmanship. They have really put a lot of hardship on our family now

    1. Kerry William Shier says:

Hi we’re from Michigan and my daughter just had her car engine go out on her. We had it towed to a garage and they said it was a blown out rear main seal and a timing chain and it was also showing a fuel pressure issue something to do with a sensor but what he said is the PVC system plugged up and blew out the main seal PVC is positive crankcase ventilation system and what we believe happened is the oil was totally low on it causing something to happen and the outside temperature got down to single digits and the PVC plugged up and blew out the seal which emptied what was left of the oil out of the system and it sounds like she’s going to need a new engine there’s something wrong with these cars I have other people that I know that are have the same car have an issues too. It’s now at the Michigan dealership and they’re not saying much but they’re going to look at it and I know they’re going to try to make us pay for it.
The first place that we took it to for the diagnostics said he had three other cars with a 2.4 engine come in the same day with the same issues so that was four cars going into one auto repair shop with the same issue all Chevy 2.4 engines.

      1. Kerry William Shier says:

In my previous report I forgot to say that it was a 2017 Chevy equinox with only 80,000 mi on it and the oil was changed according to manufacturer recommendations and there was no oil leaking on the floor in the garage or on the parking area outside the house it was all being burned up.

  6. Marianne Ulmer says:

I have a 2011 Chevy Equinox that I bought several years ago, it has 81,000 miles, I have the oil changed frequently and serviced. A couple weeks ago, my check engine light came on and stayed on. I took it to a repair shop and the technician said there wasn’t much oil in the dipstick, how could this be. No oil drips on the pavement. It’s burning oil. I had to have an oil change and flush to get rid of deposits in the oil. They reset the check engine light. I drove it for two days, and the light came on again. Needless to say, I have to have another flush and oil change. And the oil changes aren’t cheap, especially with full synthetic oil.
General Motors needs to be held accountable for this, buy our vehicles back what we paid for them. So I can buy something with no headaches and dependable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Jessica Lundquist says:

I Bought a brand new 2015 Chevy equinox. I was told it would go 7500 miles before I would need an oil change. It started burning oil and making knocking noises. The shop tried to tell me that I didn’t change my oil enough, but I was going by the manufacturer’s recommendations. There were loose ball baring getting into my oil. I aspent over $2000 getting it fixed and even now every time I get my oil change they tell me the oil is black. I have to put oil in it almost daily because it burns it so fast. I want in on this lawsuit also.

  8. Sarah Hassell says:

I just bought a 2014 Chevy Equinox for 26,000 dollars 4 and 1/2 months ago. About one month ago I took a trip from Tennessee to Florida on my way back the car stalled twice in rush hour in NC I almost got into an accident. The second time was in a traffic accident in NC near Asheville again almost got in an accident. When I got off my exit in TN. The car had this blue banner that showed up and said engine power reduced and stalled again. Also when the car switches gears it shakes and feels like it’s slipping.

    1. Sarah Hassell says:

I am paying over $500 a month for this POS that doesn’t even run properly

  9. Brittany says:

2014 Equinox. 120k miles. I’ve had to replace the manifold TWICE! The Upstream Converter 4 TIMES! In a course of a year and a half. I go through 8 qts every 3 months. Thats 5 for the oil change and 3 between it and the next one. Pricey. It’s pretty crappy that no one was informed. I had no oil in my car when I was told. THANKS GM.

  10. Patty Marx says:

I have a 2013 Chevy Equinox, burns oil!!!

    1. Bryan Dorsey says:
