Chevrolet vehicles may be prone to the "Chevy Shake" at high speeds.Drivers have launched a class action lawsuit against General Motors, claiming that the powertrains in some Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC vehicles are defective, causing an unpleasant driving experience known casually as the “Chevy shake.”

The Chevy shake class action lawsuit was filed by Kim Bostick and Branden Jamison who say that they purchased vehicles affected by the defect.

According to Bostick and Jamison, General Motors leased and sold hundreds of thousands of vehicles that are equipped with defective drivelines or powertrains — the part of the vehicle responsible for turning the vehicle’s wheels. Allegedly, this problem causes the vehicles to shake violently when driven at high speeds.

Bostick and Jamison go on to describe the “Chevy shake” defect in more detail, claiming that the problem is caused by a defective drive shaft that is part of the driveline.

According to the plaintiffs, the drive shaft is an aluminum tube running the length of the interior of the vehicle, “transmitting torque and rotation from the engine to the wheels.” The drivers say that when the output shaft of the transmission rotates, it spins the drive shaft, turning the differential ring gear to rotate the wheels.

To work correctly, the drive shaft must reportedly be designed to particular balanced and weighted standards, so it can perform at high speeds. However, the design of the GM drive shafts in question allegedly are not appropriately designed.

The GM driveline shake class action lawsuit says that because of their defect, the vehicles are unstable at highway speeds and can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles.

Allegedly, the problem can worsen over time if it is not fixed. The drivers say that the defect in the design can cause the drive shaft to deteriorate, which can cause the powertrain to completely fail by the drive shaft dropping to the ground. The drivers say this occurrence makes the vehicles unusable.

The vehicles that reportedly possess the Chevy shake defect include the following:

  • 2015 to 2020 Cadillac Escalade
  • 2014 to 2019 Chevrolet Silverado
  • 2015 to 2020 Chevrolet Suburban
  • 2015 to 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe
  • 2014 to 2019 GMC Sierra
  • 2015 to 2020 GMC Yukon or Yukon XL

GM allegedly knew or should have known about the defect in the driveline because of testing that the company should have conducted on the vehicle before it was released onto the market.

Additionally, GM knew or should have known about the problem at least after the vehicles were released onto the market because numerous complaints were made about the problem and communicated to GM, say the drivers.

The GM driveshaft class action lawsuit claims that GM actively concealed this information from consumers. The drivers state that GM put its own profits ahead of the safety and financial interest of customers.

The plaintiffs say that had they known their vehicles were defective, they would not have purchased them or would not have paid as much as they did for them.

In April, GM drivers filed a separate, similar Chevy shake class action lawsuit.

I own a 2017 Silverado and the shaking begins at 80 mph. Get worse as speed goes up.Feels like hole truck coming apart.

Wow what a devastating blow for me and my family. My beautiful “American made vehicle”, a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with a 5.3L V8 engine, died. Suddenly to might I add which adds to the mix of emotions. Being a proud union member myself I can’t even emphasize the embarrassment when I have to explain that my recently paid off truck, which at the time was $40,000, just decided to quit on me. 81,000 miles- engine? Smoked? Still don’t have an explanation from my 3rd mechanic, however what I do know is my vehicle is no longer covered under its original 5 yr or 100,000 mile warranty. Spectacular- as you can see with the low mileage I lightly drive it- that includes RARELY towing.
After doing some research on my own, I did realize that my vehicle is the vehicle that started to shake after 70 mph. A very tight shake. This started 2 months back. Silly me, not receiving any warning indicators from the truck, ASSUMED it was tire pressure. I constantly put air in my tires- even had my tires rotated. Less than two months later, here I am. Dazed and confused. Driving my wife’s 2011 Honda Civic. EMBARRASSED. DISGUSTED.

Sincerely Nicholas Nackley, a proud UNIOUN Electrician.

Cannot believe I found this. Been dealing with this for years But – mine is a 2012 silverado 1500.

  4. Louis Perez says:

My Silverado 1500 LD with 16K miles vibrates at 70+. Have brand new Bridgestone’s on it and the balancing was repeated. Still vibrates. Is this the drive shaft. I am going to have to take it to the dealer, it is still under warranty, but my experience with dealers has never been good.

  5. Marvin says:

I have a 2017 Silverado with only 93,000 miles on it, and it shakes when going faster than 35mph. Haven’t even had the truck for a week. Not only that the gears shift rough. Mechanic told me that a lot of the Silverado transmissions are going in due to bad shifting. This is just sad it has changed my opinion on Chevy Silverado’s.

  6. Rob Owen says:

I have a 2014 GMC Sierra and it had a slight shake from day one. Had the transmission go out 2 years ago at 115,000 miles and had it replaced by a GMC dealer and the shake got a lot worse. Asked the dealer about it and they said it had to be the shocks I have spent about $4000.00 on new tires, lower ball joints, front hubs and rear shocks and it still shakes bad at 65mph and up I drive interstate everyday and I pray that it doesn’t cause me to crash.

  7. Paul Kocke says:

I have a 2018 Silverado High Country, Duramax Diesel with Allison Transmission. In the last year it has developed a vibration at speeds above 70 MPH. Recently has a leaking right rear axle seal, has to be related. Bought the truck new and had no troubles with vibration until the last year.

  8. Rick says:

My 2016 Silverado High Country shakes on front right tire. Currently in a shop to try and fix it. Didn’t know about the “Chevy Shake” problem until researching the cause of my trucks shaking. How do I get included in the law suit against GM?

  9. Teri Williams says:

My 2019 Silverado with less than 40K miles shakes and it’s horrible! The dealership is useless and insist nothing is wrong.

  10. Matt Macintosh says:

Have a 2016 Chevy Silverado 150058,000 miles on it and it shakes like crazy at about 50 miles an hour! Way too much money for a vehicle that shakes like this! Chevy needs to make this right!
