Chevrolet vehicles may be prone to the "Chevy Shake" at high speeds.Drivers have launched a class action lawsuit against General Motors, claiming that the powertrains in some Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC vehicles are defective, causing an unpleasant driving experience known casually as the “Chevy shake.”

The Chevy shake class action lawsuit was filed by Kim Bostick and Branden Jamison who say that they purchased vehicles affected by the defect.

According to Bostick and Jamison, General Motors leased and sold hundreds of thousands of vehicles that are equipped with defective drivelines or powertrains — the part of the vehicle responsible for turning the vehicle’s wheels. Allegedly, this problem causes the vehicles to shake violently when driven at high speeds.

Bostick and Jamison go on to describe the “Chevy shake” defect in more detail, claiming that the problem is caused by a defective drive shaft that is part of the driveline.

According to the plaintiffs, the drive shaft is an aluminum tube running the length of the interior of the vehicle, “transmitting torque and rotation from the engine to the wheels.” The drivers say that when the output shaft of the transmission rotates, it spins the drive shaft, turning the differential ring gear to rotate the wheels.

To work correctly, the drive shaft must reportedly be designed to particular balanced and weighted standards, so it can perform at high speeds. However, the design of the GM drive shafts in question allegedly are not appropriately designed.

The GM driveline shake class action lawsuit says that because of their defect, the vehicles are unstable at highway speeds and can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles.

Allegedly, the problem can worsen over time if it is not fixed. The drivers say that the defect in the design can cause the drive shaft to deteriorate, which can cause the powertrain to completely fail by the drive shaft dropping to the ground. The drivers say this occurrence makes the vehicles unusable.

The vehicles that reportedly possess the Chevy shake defect include the following:

  • 2015 to 2020 Cadillac Escalade
  • 2014 to 2019 Chevrolet Silverado
  • 2015 to 2020 Chevrolet Suburban
  • 2015 to 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe
  • 2014 to 2019 GMC Sierra
  • 2015 to 2020 GMC Yukon or Yukon XL

GM allegedly knew or should have known about the defect in the driveline because of testing that the company should have conducted on the vehicle before it was released onto the market.

Additionally, GM knew or should have known about the problem at least after the vehicles were released onto the market because numerous complaints were made about the problem and communicated to GM, say the drivers.

The GM driveshaft class action lawsuit claims that GM actively concealed this information from consumers. The drivers state that GM put its own profits ahead of the safety and financial interest of customers.

The plaintiffs say that had they known their vehicles were defective, they would not have purchased them or would not have paid as much as they did for them.

In April, GM drivers filed a separate, similar Chevy shake class action lawsuit.

We have a 2015 Tahoe LT with 65k that has been shaking at speeds over 60-65mph for years – enough to make our phones shake right out of their holder or charger. We’ve taken it to the dealership for this issue at least 7-8 times and have been told it was x,y,z and so on, never fixing the issue completely. First it was “warped rotors” in the front, so we replaced them and they’re still shaking. Then it was the back rotors; so we replaced those (they didn’t need it and could have been turned down, but we opted to just replace them since it was only a few weeks after replacing the front.) Then we were told the shaking was because the tires needed balancing – nope, still not fixed. Then alignment and road force balancing of tires was needed; did that, not fixed. We were told it was an issue with the transmission fluid being dirty; had that flushed, and it did nothing. Then it was the map sensors that needed to be changed, and we did that (paying for all of this) and still it wasn’t fixed. Of
Course now we are both perplexed and annoyed that we keep bringing our truck in to have this issue diagnosed and repaired, and get the run around, so we have recently been considering replacing the tires even though they are at least 20,000 miles from needing to being replaced; but also are considering just trading it in for a new truck, assuming ours was just a lemon. Seeing this suit kind of irritates me, as the dealership continues to tell us they have had no one else complain of this issue, which is obviously not true. Had we known years ago this was a common problem in Tahoes, I’m positive we would not have kept the truck and continued to pour money into it to diagnose a problem that GM knew exactly how to fix.

I have a 2019 Chevy Equanox 2.0 this vehicle been in the dealership about twenty times since I purchase it and November was a year that I bought it, when I test drive it there was a smell of a burn I was told it was the new brakes smell and to find out the smell was coming from the passenger front end struts they fixed that it also has a rattling noise that they couldn’t figure out what it was I told the service department it was coming from the driver side window they said it wasn’t the window so the service tech decided it was the driver side headliner clips they the vehicle stayed in the shop for a week they had to order the parts I pick the vehicle up driving it for a couple days the same problem took it to the dealership again this time the service tech decided it’s the driver door,I told the dealership this vehicle should have been sent back to GM they lie and take advantage of women if you don’t no anything about buying a car I got very angry and frustrated with them they had me looking at another vehicle like they were going to change my vehicle out with another one to find out sitting in the dealership for two or three hours to be asked to fill out a new credit application that sounds really stupid to me when I already have a loan with that being said this vehicle is still not fixed they lie to you and charge a lot for these cheap car’s.The said part about it is I talked to one of GM representative about the vehicle she communicating with me and she stop answering her phone I told her I feel I bought a new Lemon and I’m still not satisfied with this vehicle.

My husband and I bought a 2015 GMC Sierra Denali and it has been in service for this problem more than once. They change fluids and send us on our way, but it doesn’t correct it. I have notified GMC myself as well as the dealership to no avail.

I have a 2018 Chevy equinox that shakes after I brake. I had it checked out and the spark plugs were replaced, however my vehicle still shakes after I brake

  9. Charles mulherin says:

I have the GM shake in my 2016 Sierra. I purchased it and immediately knew there was an issue. The dealership promised they would fix it. I brought it there numerous times and they claimed they fixed it, but they never did. I have videos that I’ve showed them and took them driving and they said it’s normal. It’s far from normal. 3 years later it’s still bad, right around 75 mph.
