Gas prices are expected to increase to their highest level since 2014 following the Colonial Pipeline shutdown caused by a ransomware attack on Friday, May 7, CNBC is reporting.

The Colonial Pipeline runs from the Gulf Coast to the Northeast and carries approximately 45 percent of the fuel for the East Coast. About 5,500 miles of the pipeline shut down due to the attack.

Following the attack, the Department of Transportation declared a state of emergency across 17 states in the region affected.

“AAA forecasts gas prices to climb this week in reaction to the shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline,” the road travel organization said in a statement. “The longer the pipeline is offline, the larger the impact on the east coast.”
