Refrigerator repair manConsumers are still finding themselves disappointed with the performance of their LG refrigerators due to an alleged cooling defect.

The refrigerators in question are reportedly equipped with a linear compressor which is responsible for the cooling of the appliance. These components cool refrigerators by cooling refrigerant gas which in turn increases pressure and temperature until the refrigerant gas turns into a liquid. Once the refrigerant is converted into a liquid, it is passed through coils where it absorbs heat from the fridge – creating a cool environment.

A defect with the LG refrigerator linear compressor reportedly causes the appliances to fail. This allegedly causes food within the refrigerator to spoil. In some cases, the affected refrigerators allegedly fail within a few years of purchasing the appliances despite LG representations that their refrigerators can last up to 20 years.

Consumers claim that the issue is causing their refrigerators to fail and that LG’s response has been lackluster. One consumer wrote a review on Consumer Affairs, claiming that the experienced repairman was unsure that repairs as drastic as rewiring the whole fridge would fix the issue. This was reportedly after the consumer was forced to pay for a part that did not work with the model as well as repair labor.

One customer asked, “How long before LG is proactive with correcting the problem, and at what cost to us in terms of no cold storage?”

Although one settlement has been reached regarding another LG refrigerator cooling defect, consumer dissatisfaction has prompted new legal action against the appliance maker.

In April 2019, several plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit against LG. The consumers argue that LG did not disclose that their appliances were prone to defects and instead portrayed their refrigerators as effective and capable of lasting up to 20 years.

“Although refrigerators last 13 years on average, the LG Refrigerators have been failing en masse within 36 months,” the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit claims.

Purchasers allegedly rely on LG representations when shopping for appliances. The plaintiffs argue that they would not have purchased LG refrigerators or paid what they did if they had known about the issues that allegedly cause failure of the appliance.

According to the class action lawsuit, the consumers demand that LG takes steps to “cure the defect and ensure the accuracy of its representations about its refrigerators.”

Despite consumer outrage about LG refrigerators and cooling issues, LG reportedly stands by their products and maintains that they will repair any appliance under warranty.

“At LG, customer satisfaction is paramount. LG home appliances are enjoyed by millions of Americans every day, and we’re proud that our products are recognized by industry experts for their reliability and that LG has been awarded more JD Power Awards for customer satisfaction than any other appliance manufacturer,” an LG spokesperson told Digital Trends.

The LG Refrigerator Compressor Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Case No. 8:19-cv-00610, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

  1. Carol says:

The compressor in our LG refrigerator failed after just 2 years in service. LG refused to pay for servicing and the same parts would have been used for replacement. There are multiple complaints about early failure of LG refrigerators and we decided it was not worth repairing.

I will never purchase another LG product.

I used to think LG was a reputable brand, now, not so much. We purchased our french door $3000 fridge in June 2016, it wasn’t delivered until October of 2016 because it was continually back ordered. I just got off the phone with LG for the latest repair and asked them to back up our warranty date to reflect the Oct date instead of June which I think is fair but they refused, must be the purchase date. I find that to be extremely poor customer service. Our first compressor failure was Oct. 2018. I called several repair companies before contacting LG and they refused to work on LG products because they have so many issues and they are too expensive to repair.I sent an email to LG with quite a long complaint and they finally sent a repair guy who said the compressor is a continual issue. We have had issues with the ice maker since the first repair and the unit just failed again July 18, 2020. I called customer service again today and they agreed to send out another repair person but they can’t get here for a week. Who needs a refrigerator when you’ve lost all of your food. This company is ridiculous and needs to back their product, I spent way too much money on this to be dealing with these issues.

I bought my LG fridge 2017, it was having problems 1 yr. later it kept getting warm so I took out lots of food thinking it had too much food, but the freezer wasn’t saying either. We lost food twice due to this fridge these types of appliances are not cheap, and yet very expensive to repair I’m so glad I found out about this site.

  4. Lisa says:

We purchased our LG refrigerator in 2011. We had our first issue in 2018. We had to replace the compressor. The ice maker also stopped working intermittently at that time.It is now July 2020 and we’ve had to replace the ice maker and compressor has to be replaced again. So this refrigerator has been defective for a very long time and it seems LG just doesn’t care. I don’t recommend this appliance and will never purchase another LG product. I seriously thought we could get a good 15 years out of it but that has gone
    Out the window.

We also have experienced the same issues, but in different order. We bought our LG triple door (LFX28978) with external water and ice dispenser in 2011. We had no issues for years, until having to replace the fridge door seals about 18 months ago. In early June, our ice maker started to fail. The ice was in the tray but wouldn’t dump. I replaced the ice maker (many OEM parts no longer produced for our unit by LG). Then in mid July, our freezer slowly started failing. Now it is limping along and we have moved frozen food out to our mini freezer in the garage.

Unfortunately, our fridge lasted beyond the 2014 class action suit. After reading all of the repair fiascos, we have decided not to call a tech to repair the unit. Components seem to be working as they should, so the issue may be with the motherboard. Instead of the 15-20 years for a major appliance, we got 9 years.

LGs look nice and have great features, but not good if they break down prematurely. Our fingers are crossed for our microwave and gas range, both purchased after the fridge.

Had my LG Refrigerator for 4 years and it quit cooling. Talked to a local technician that informed me of this common issue that the compressor was faulty and was likely the cause. We have the french door with freezer drawer model. Called LG and they are sending a technician 7 days from now and claimed i should owe nothing since less than 5 years old… will see what happens.

    1. Dana says:

I had my refrigerator for 3.5 years and it had problem two weeks ago. The local technician told me it’s the compressor issue. I called LG after that. LG said they will send some technicians and will cover both labor and cost because mine is still under warranty. After 7 days hearing nothing, I called them back and they told me to wait for 2 more days. After another 2 days, calling again and they said keep waiting because the technician can call anytime. I asked them how long I have to wait: 2 more weeks, 2 more months? If they can’t fix it, give me another solution. I can’t just wait with the broken refrigerator in a super hot summer. Now they told me to wait for 24 hours. I’ll call back tomorrow to talk to the manager if they keep buying time like that. Not sure if someone has any advice to escalate this.

  6. Steve Bahr says:

Mine is failing in only 1 year. For over 3 grand you’d think it would last longer than that. I’ve already thrown out 2 freezers full of food. The first time i thought the bottom freezer drawer got stuck open from something, but this time i’m sure that’s not it. The fact that there are so many search engine results over this is a bad sign. I regret buying this overpriced piece of junk. Beeps at you for stupid stuff, but not if the freezer gets warm. Temps on the door won’t tell you freezer temp, just what you’d like it to be. Who designs this stuff?

  7. Salwa loucka says:

I am currently have a problem with my LG fridge tried to reach the company on Saturday evening closed till Monday called on Monday got RNN number and a servIce company phone number and LG gave me an appointment for yesterday 6/23/2020 between 1-5 left work waited for a long time and no one showed up I called the service company they had no idea and said they had no confirmation number advised me to call LG next day and to put us on a 3way call. Called LG stayed on the line for about 30 min until someone responded it was the authorisation centre that did not respond finaly after 1hour and 27 min I got an appointment by LG technician to come to my house on July first between 1-5. I explained I am diabetic and heart patient how can I survive over 10 days without fresh healthy food how can I cook and store my food is there is a way to have an earlier appointment I was given a TNN number and advised me to call tomorrow. At this point I am really not just disappointed but ready to join people in their lawsuit against LG because I see that even if it is fixed I have a long way of facing future issues with a fridge that is just 3 years old

  8. Kim Wallis says:

My ice machine has never worked properly since we purchased it in July 2016. Always one excuse after another when we called them. I believe we are now out of warranty but Im hearing others have the same problem.

  9. Jeff Witty says:

Bought our French door with freezer drawer in June of 2017, and it just died. Being a type 1 diabetic, this is a real inconvenience as my insulin is now in a cooler full of Ice and what little food we had left that didn’t spoil. We contacted LG, and the lady my wife spoke with was polite, and said LG would eat the cost of parts and labor, but after reading these other posts, I think It’s us that will be eating the costs. Time to move on!! Bye bye LG. I just hope we can find a decent replacement that will actually hold up for an acceptable time. Apparently, stock is low because of CoVid.

    1. Sue Paxton says:

OMG-we’ve had a technician out 4 times… we thought the issue was resolved last Friday after spending over $700 in repairs but tonight both fridge and freezer no longer work. Even though the first technician said “don’t fix it, get a new one”, we decided after pricing out a replacement we would fix it because we REALLY like it. What a HUGE financial mistake we made.
We are going to scrap it after spending over $700 to fix it and buy a new one….the only positive is that the next place we buy a new one will haul away this piece of crap for free

  10. Don Cooper says:

I bought a LG French door with freezer drawer. I can not believe all the reviews i am reading about thier refrigerators and doing nothing about it or updating the issues! I will never ever buy a LG product ever again! Apparently people get them fixed and they are back to square one! Im so glad i didn’t buy an extended warranty when you consider all the break downs and loss of food!

    1. Sue says:

Im qith you i cant even call or contact !!!!
