LG top load washer

UPDATE:

  • This case was dismissed March 1, 2021.

A class action lawsuit claims LG Electronics top-loading washing machines have defects that cause the machine to stop in the middle of a wash cycle due to an “imbalanced load.”

Plaintiff Diana and Sherman Kroop claim they purchased an LG HE Top-Load Ultra Capacity Washing Machine, with model number WT4870CW from a Florida Home Depot in 2013.

They claim they started experiencing the “imbalanced load” error on their washing machine one year after purchasing the product. They also say that they contacted LG but were given the “proverbial runaround.”

The Kroops say LG told them that they never heard of the problem and explained the “proper” way to load the washing machine. However, the instructions they received from LG did not fix the error message, nor correct the imbalance defects.

The plaintiffs had to resort to using a laundromat because the defect became “unbearable” and incurred more than $27 in laundromat expenses because they could not use their washing machine, according to the LG class action lawsuit.

The Kroops also contacted Home Depot and were told to call Asurion, a warranty company, because they bought an extended warranty when they purchased the washing machine. Asurion reimbursed the couple for their out-of-pocket expenses but told the Kroops the company could not do anything about the imbalanced load defect.

The couple claims that LG still has not fixed the imbalance load defect. In fact, the Kroops say that during the week the LG class action lawsuit was filed, the washing machine could not complete a load consisting of two king-sized sheets, three pillowcases and a few towels.

“Consumers have reported that one load of laundry could take up to 5 to 6 hours due to the washing machine stopping the wash in the middle of a cycle numerous times,” the LG class action lawsuit alleges.

The class action lawsuit claims that LG has known about the “imbalanced load” defect since January 2012 when the company started receiving complaints from customers. In addition, LG issued a service bulletin to its dealers in February 2013 but the bulletins were not issued to the public, according to the plaintiffs.

Another service bulletin was distributed to dealers in February 2014 adding other LG models that were affected by the imbalance defect. Again, the bulletin was allegedly not distributed to the public.

The Kroops say LG updated the software in the washing machine in December 2013 to alleviate the problem, which would better identify the problem. Now, consumers were told to rebalance the load in the machine, rather than the product going directly into the spin cycle.

“LG knew, or was reckless in knowing, at or before the time it sold the first unit that the LG Washing Machines contained the Imbalance Defect. LG had sole and exclusive possession of this knowledge,” claims the LG class action lawsuit.

The LG Imbalanced Load Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Kroop v. LG Electronics USA Inc., Case No. 2:20-cv-00625, in the U.S District Court for the District of New Jersey.

We have an LG Toploader that stops immediately because it thinks it is in balanced. You can take all day to wash one load of clothes. It’s so frustrating and we have to go to laundromat to get clothes washed so that it doesn’t take all day! Very, very upsetting!

My washer seems to have this load balance problem. It is a problem that defeats me. I have not used the machine for over a year now. The filter that is located on the lower left front of the washer also broke and I have to buy a replacement. I am disappointed in both the machine and my I ability to keep it running as I love it when it works as it is supposed to.

I too have a LG top load washing machine. I’ve had severe problems with it for years n no one can help I e struggled so hard n I can’t buy another machine. I’m 65 years old n I’m on a fixed income n disabled.
Model number Wt5070cw. It continues to stop in middle of cycles n on a low load or any load the water fills too the. Very top each time n the drum begins too shake severely. It continues too say it’s unbalanced it it’s not. I make sure of it
I either have to stand there n watch it or go downstairs to check it.
It takes hours to do one load.
I’m disabled n it’s hard for me to go to the basement each time. I have a bed ridden son who needs his clothing washed n I can’t do it. I don’t drive so I can’t go to the laundry Matt plus I can’t afford that. So I wash by hand. Plz fix my machine. Thankyou

The reason I found this article is bc our LG WASHER HAS GIVEN ME GRIEF FOR YEARS AND now the horrible sounds Im hearing had me concerned. We’ve had all of these issues with unbalanced loads and possibly just a couple of clothes in the load.

We purchased WT1101C in 2014 from Home Depot. I had no problems for the first few years of operation. For about the last 4 years I have experienced the rebalance issue just about every time I wash clothes. When loading clothes to washed, I make sure that the weight is evenly distributed. I do not overload. Takes hours for a load to go thru the washing cycle. Definitely is not a water saver. Many many times of going thru the spin cycle and again filling up with water. Pant legs will come out all tangled up with long sleeve of a blouse. I am very dissatisfied with this product.

We have the LG Top-loading Washer, Model# WT4870CW and have been experiencing this same issue for years. Sometimes the will “restart” over and over taking many hours to compete. EXTREMELY frustrating.

We are having same issues where our LG Top loader washer machine stops in the middle of a load!

My LG washer is 1 year old and every wash cycle is the same error and we have done every thing requested to fix the error. Very frustrating

We also have an LG top load 4.5 cu ft washer and just had our home warranty department tell us they wouldn’t pay to fix it. It’s two years old and a year into this we started having the same issues described. Minimal clothing and weight but still the issue persists. According to our home warranty company this is a major flaw and known issue with LG and the part is too expensive to replace. So basically the $999 we paid two years in is unusable and junk! They offered us $343 to replace it.

My email address is shailenpatel@yahoo.com, get the same error code as above.

WT4870CW Lg I have had balance issues with it for 6 years. Replaced the tension rods still errors. Do I need to replace the control board?

  10. gary eugene mustage says:

I just bought on used model wt1101cw, it first had the ue error, I replaced all 4 shocks, and tied a bunji cord around the drum and each shock post, its better but not fixed. Maybe cushions all around the drum? And then it started displaying oe, I replaced the pressure switch, and that problem is solved.
