LG top load washer

UPDATE:

  • This case was dismissed March 1, 2021.

A class action lawsuit claims LG Electronics top-loading washing machines have defects that cause the machine to stop in the middle of a wash cycle due to an “imbalanced load.”

Plaintiff Diana and Sherman Kroop claim they purchased an LG HE Top-Load Ultra Capacity Washing Machine, with model number WT4870CW from a Florida Home Depot in 2013.

They claim they started experiencing the “imbalanced load” error on their washing machine one year after purchasing the product. They also say that they contacted LG but were given the “proverbial runaround.”

The Kroops say LG told them that they never heard of the problem and explained the “proper” way to load the washing machine. However, the instructions they received from LG did not fix the error message, nor correct the imbalance defects.

The plaintiffs had to resort to using a laundromat because the defect became “unbearable” and incurred more than $27 in laundromat expenses because they could not use their washing machine, according to the LG class action lawsuit.

The Kroops also contacted Home Depot and were told to call Asurion, a warranty company, because they bought an extended warranty when they purchased the washing machine. Asurion reimbursed the couple for their out-of-pocket expenses but told the Kroops the company could not do anything about the imbalanced load defect.

The couple claims that LG still has not fixed the imbalance load defect. In fact, the Kroops say that during the week the LG class action lawsuit was filed, the washing machine could not complete a load consisting of two king-sized sheets, three pillowcases and a few towels.

“Consumers have reported that one load of laundry could take up to 5 to 6 hours due to the washing machine stopping the wash in the middle of a cycle numerous times,” the LG class action lawsuit alleges.

The class action lawsuit claims that LG has known about the “imbalanced load” defect since January 2012 when the company started receiving complaints from customers. In addition, LG issued a service bulletin to its dealers in February 2013 but the bulletins were not issued to the public, according to the plaintiffs.

Another service bulletin was distributed to dealers in February 2014 adding other LG models that were affected by the imbalance defect. Again, the bulletin was allegedly not distributed to the public.

The Kroops say LG updated the software in the washing machine in December 2013 to alleviate the problem, which would better identify the problem. Now, consumers were told to rebalance the load in the machine, rather than the product going directly into the spin cycle.

“LG knew, or was reckless in knowing, at or before the time it sold the first unit that the LG Washing Machines contained the Imbalance Defect. LG had sole and exclusive possession of this knowledge,” claims the LG class action lawsuit.

Model WT4970CW: Bought our LG True Balance Wave Force with SMARTDIAGNOSIS in June, 2015. No problems with UE errors until THIS year! I’m washing the same clothes I’ve always washed, haven’t changed anything, but now those UE errors are a pain! I had a GE washer for 20 years, but NEVER had any problems with it. If I have to buy a new washer, it will NOT be an LG.

My LG runs for hours. Sometimes I wonder how much water I am really consuming! It washes out all static cling products and leaves my clothing hard and static filled. Sometimes I have to add clothing one at a time to the drier to try to get the process going and it broke the drum from weight. It’s left things permanently musty…it takes so much of my day and if I walk away I find it going hours and hours later!

All. The. Time. Like many who’ve posted here, the issue has become more and more frequent. Of course, our machine is way out of warranty, so any repairs will be astronomical. I don’t know what we’re going to do about it. We have an adult son with special needs, and we do a lot of laundry. Because the washer is continually becoming unbalanced, flashing “ue,” and then we have to stop it, rearrange the clothes, start it again, and perhaps do this little dance two or three more times PER LOAD, we are so behind on the family’s laundry, we are wasting water, wasting money we don’t have, and wasting time that could be so much better spent on more productive things!

Our landlord left an LG impeller top load washer for us and it won’t finish a load no matter the size. If it’s not stuffed full, it won’t finish ever. Like ever. You have to remove the items and wring them out so they’re never actually clean. ALL comforters and blankets have caked detergent on them. We are having to get this hauled away and will need to purchase a new washer. Not worth the time and stress. I would join in a class action suit in a heartbeat. It is so frustrating that this has been serviced and the repairmen have said it’s just what this machine does. There’s no way to balance it.

I have a LG front load that is only 18 months old and my laundry room was flooded and machine has been imbalanced several times. The last time it shook so hard that both sides of machine is severely damage. I called LG and they told me the machine is out of warranty. Gave me the run around of not loading machine properly. Gave me a number to call for repair. The company they gave me lives over 2 hrs away. When we original bought the unit we had problems with it leaking water. Had troubles at first with them. Finally they sent someone out. The technician found the soap dispensor was cracked and had to order a new one. Customer service with LG is very bad.

I have an LG Top Load washer WT1101CW that I purchased back in 2-6-15. It has been a half way decent washer up until the last 2 months. Like the others it constantly goes unbalanced UE, it will take several hours to do a load of clothes and someone to constantly unbalance it. It doesn’t matter what size the load is. I put my clothes in so the are even around the entire washer and that don’t matter either. I’m pretty fed up with the washer and off course will never buy another LG product!

I purchased an LG Smart drum washer over 5 years ago. It has had the same imbalance issue. Currently the issue seems to be the water keeps filling overfilling the tub through the bleach dispenser. The shoot it comes out of plastic gets worn and is a crappy design. As seen on YouTube many other people are having this issue.

I purchased a top load LG smart drum washer and dryer from Home Depot in 2018. My washer has the unbalanced error occur after 2-3 washings. I thought my floor was uneven so we leveled the floor and set the washer on top but the issue is still there. I have to rearrange the clothes but most of the time it doesn’t help. I’ve tried to use the just spin setting to spin the water out of the load but it adds a rinse as well. So now I just dry them from wet. A pain in the neck. I paid good money for the set and now I will not buy LG products anymore.

  7. Rita says:

I have had this washer for 7 years now and it never runs a cycle all the way through. I always believed the floor was unleveled, we had someone out to repair the entire floor and it is still running UE. It has caused countless hours of disturbance and emotional stress.

We have an LG top load washing machine, model WT4870CW. Shortly after purchasing it the machine continually showed the imbalance code. We would try to distribute the load and then turn it on again. This usually worked. Lately, however, it has been more persistent with this code and harder to satisfy by redistributing. A week ago the machine would not go through the spin cycle at full speed, REGARDLESS WHAT WE DID!!! Call a repairman, he installed a new electronic control panel, and it failed to work. The code coming up then indicated the machine needed a new motor. Total repair (control panel and motor) would cost more than we originally paid for the machine new!!! We have had the washer for app. 5 years. It serves only my husband and me, not a family. I HAVE NOT POSTED THIS BEFORE.

Our LG Wave force is constantly out of balance.
Tried redistributing the clothes many times.
    Still does it.
Tired of having to put up this.

Same problem. Go back a couple hours later to dry clothes and the machine has ue error and either is refilling or stopped. Also tangles the clothes so bad it takes time to untangle. I am 83 years old and am the only user of this machine. Lg should be ashamed.
