LG top load washer

UPDATE:

  • This case was dismissed March 1, 2021.

A class action lawsuit claims LG Electronics top-loading washing machines have defects that cause the machine to stop in the middle of a wash cycle due to an “imbalanced load.”

Plaintiff Diana and Sherman Kroop claim they purchased an LG HE Top-Load Ultra Capacity Washing Machine, with model number WT4870CW from a Florida Home Depot in 2013.

They claim they started experiencing the “imbalanced load” error on their washing machine one year after purchasing the product. They also say that they contacted LG but were given the “proverbial runaround.”

The Kroops say LG told them that they never heard of the problem and explained the “proper” way to load the washing machine. However, the instructions they received from LG did not fix the error message, nor correct the imbalance defects.

The plaintiffs had to resort to using a laundromat because the defect became “unbearable” and incurred more than $27 in laundromat expenses because they could not use their washing machine, according to the LG class action lawsuit.

The Kroops also contacted Home Depot and were told to call Asurion, a warranty company, because they bought an extended warranty when they purchased the washing machine. Asurion reimbursed the couple for their out-of-pocket expenses but told the Kroops the company could not do anything about the imbalanced load defect.

The couple claims that LG still has not fixed the imbalance load defect. In fact, the Kroops say that during the week the LG class action lawsuit was filed, the washing machine could not complete a load consisting of two king-sized sheets, three pillowcases and a few towels.

“Consumers have reported that one load of laundry could take up to 5 to 6 hours due to the washing machine stopping the wash in the middle of a cycle numerous times,” the LG class action lawsuit alleges.

The class action lawsuit claims that LG has known about the “imbalanced load” defect since January 2012 when the company started receiving complaints from customers. In addition, LG issued a service bulletin to its dealers in February 2013 but the bulletins were not issued to the public, according to the plaintiffs.

Another service bulletin was distributed to dealers in February 2014 adding other LG models that were affected by the imbalance defect. Again, the bulletin was allegedly not distributed to the public.

The Kroops say LG updated the software in the washing machine in December 2013 to alleviate the problem, which would better identify the problem. Now, consumers were told to rebalance the load in the machine, rather than the product going directly into the spin cycle.

“LG knew, or was reckless in knowing, at or before the time it sold the first unit that the LG Washing Machines contained the Imbalance Defect. LG had sole and exclusive possession of this knowledge,” claims the LG class action lawsuit.

We have a 107kwks50061 top load washer and we can’t do a single load without getting the UE error message

      actual model number wt5001cw

  2. Kathleen Derochea says:

We own the LG WT5070CW Wave Series Top Load Washer and it has had the IE Load Imbalance issue intermittently since we got it and by year 4 or 5, it was happening 50%-75% of the time.

We’d be interested in joining the Class Action lawsuit.

  3. Robert Kemper says:

We own the WT 7600 HKA and have been experiencing the Imbalance issue frequently. The message displayed is IE. The machine goes through numerous cycles of fill and spin or just shuts off and displays the error message. Is there a fix?

  4. Adlay Bugg says:

We are having the same problem! It takes 5-6 hours to wash one load and is always imbalanced. When we do the electronic diagnostic it says nothing is wrong. This is supposed to be an energy saver and uses more electric and water than the rest of the house. I could go on, but just upsetting to mention all that it’s costing us. We are now spending money at a local laundromat.

  5. Ray Delgado says:

We have had several problems with our lg top load washer since the first week we purchased the machine, balance problems, machine not filling up correctly, clothes not clean, and just recently the machine does not want to drain, we called lg directly the first week and asked for a refund and pick up there junk, they told they would call me back, its been a year now and no call and more problems with there product, the draining problem eas the last for me, i am purchusing another washer and dryer because i have to, i called on this problem 2 days ago and the machine is sitting there unrepaired, please add to the law suit,

Same here, goes off balance and throws code UE. Very frustrating.
    model WT4870CW
Can’t put up with it anymore. Going to buy new washer.

  7. Crystal Rice says:

I have the same issue with the UE and/or LE codes. My washer loves to stay at the nine minute mark of spin cycle forever before I get the code that stops all progress. We have replaced many parts hoping to rectify this situation and I am still at the point of finding the machine unusable.

  8. Gary L Bergeron says:

Yep my WT4870cw is a constant problem with UE errors. The washer seems to be running very smoothly when this error occurs? Please include me in complaint

  9. Ricky Deese says:

Wt1101cw replaced control board , springs and hall sensor still the same problem what a piece of junk lg put on the market to sale.

    1. Chach says:

LG top load washer UE code all the time just junk i am going to buy what is in the laundromat speed Queen

  10. Vince says:

I believe it’s a faulty part or design regarding their control board, nothing to do with an unbalanced load.
As you will see some reporter other errors. My LG washer throws a DE error. It does this on longer cycles, rarely on speed wash, and seems to be when spinning the load is involved. I run a low speed spin on speed wash and the problem doesn’t happen as much.
I’ve isolated it down to putting pressure in a certain area on the control board replicated the issue. Wiring is good. I think it’s a control board issue.
