York manufactures heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) units, along with residential and commercial furnaces, heat pumps, and other appliances. Some consumers have reported problems with York productsand the company may be subject to an investigation by a law firm over the York HVAC unit.

Where is York HVAC Equipment Made?

York is headquartered in York, Penn. In 2005, Johnson Controls purchased York.

The company markets its products under the Coleman and Luxaire brands and sells them in 150 countries. Furnacecompare.com reports that York HVAC units are made in the company’s facilities in Kansas and Oklahoma.

Who Owns York HVAC?

While York products are found in diverse locations, including the British House of Parliament, Sydney Opera House, and Los Angeles International Airport, the company holds just a 4.5% share of the HVAC market, according to airconditionerlab.com.

The company has struggled in the HVAC market due to its price point compared to other HVAC brands, says airconditionerlab.com. HVAC units can cost thousands to install, and though they are meant to last many years, repairs can become expensive, especially if not covered under a warranty.

York Air Conditioning Reviews

York HVAC reviews have been mixed. York has been dogged by complaints that “poor installation techniques and subsequent malfunctions in the air conditioner’s functioning have led people to regret investing in York air conditioners,” according to airconditionerlab.com.

In addition, airconditionerlab.com notes that York’s units have a lower efficiency rating than competitors.

“This, combined with the fact that these units are widely sold to wholesalers, whose staff is not equipped or trained for all kinds of installations, has resulted in York being reviewed poorly online,” states the website.

Indeed, online reviews are littered with complaints from dissatisfied consumers. Some say the units are too loud and break often. At least one HVAC reviewer claims to have experienced dizzy spells from a York HVAC unit.

“We bought this furnace in 2010,” a reviewer wrote in 2017 in a post entitled ‘Worst furnace you can buy.’

“Have had to have repairs done almost every year. Still not working properly. Lucky we have 10 year warranty, once the warranty is done we will be purchasing a new furnace and it will not be a York. Don’t waste your money or time with a York!”

Other consumers have also knocked the quality of York’s HVAC products. One person reported that the unit broke as soon as the warranty period expired, and others say York’s quality is not worthy of the price tag.

“We put a York heating/air conditioning unit in after hurricane Sandy,” a reviewer wrote in 2017. “We paid a fortune for the unit. It keeps breaking down and we’ve spent hundreds of dollars on top of the [$]12,0000 we put in for the entire installation process. Now we’re in the middle of a heatwave and we have no air because we need a new compressor that will cost [$]800 with labor etc. Don’t buy York!”

York HVAC is under investigation by a law firmAdditionally, contractors report frustration with the product in online reviews.

“I deal York and every item out of the box turns out working wrong,” says a contractor review on furnacecompare.com entitled “Junk.”

One of the problems with York units, according to industry experts, is that the company sells wholesale to dealers who don’t know how to properly install and maintain them.

York HVAC Lawsuit

While some experts attribute problems with York HVAC products to poor installation, if the problems stem from design or manufacturing defects, consumers may be able to take legal action under consumer protection laws. An HVAC unit is a costly purchase for most homeowners and it’s important to have a working unit for both safety and comfort.

York brands Luxaire and Coleman have been the subject of a class action lawsuit in which consumers alleged that copper coils in the units failed due to a defect, costing thousands in repeated repair attempts. York and its parent company, Johnson Controls, admitted no liability but agreed to reimburse York HVAC owners for repairs, as well as a $75 service rebate to settle the 2018 class action allegations. Under the settlement terms, eligible consumers were able to claim thousands in reimbursements.

Lawyers are looking into whether York is again selling defective HVAC units. If you own one and have experienced problems, you may qualify to be a part of this investigation.

    Bought a York Model PHE4A3024A, in 2022 and less than 4 years of having it we have to replace a compressor, it has caused an acid leak which has in return caused a “burn off” into the other parts of the unit blowing chunks of black gunk everywhere and included coils rubbing too closely causing a leak in one. Between the solvent air filter replacement have to go through the process 2-3 more times, ranging a $1000 a visit to do we will still not be guaranteed that it will solve the issue that has been created by the York components inside. Which to at this time would be $5000 in labor fees not guaranteeing a resolution. Calling my local York rep Robert Light he answered the first time but has ignored my husband and the AC tech that discovered these findings and now will not return any calls, emails, or text messages. Now I am stuck paying off a unit 3 years old that is useless and having to purchase a different NON York to provide comfort for my family from Yorks failures of a unit and failures to do the right thing.

    Worst purchase ever. My YORK PHE6B4821 has gone down 6 times in 5 years. purchased 3/2020. I’ve had to replace the expansion valve, a pressure sensor, coil, blower motor and now the condenser fan blades sheard off of the motor and needs to be replaced. The ac company says its extremely rare for this to happen and to happen on a newer unit is unheard of. I have spent 3k already and they are wanting another $ 1800 to fix. I live in PHX AZ and every time it goes out, we are in a heat wave. The blower motor was 2 months out of warranty and the condenser motor is 6 months out of warranty. To spend 5k on fixing an AC unit that is only 5 years old is crazy.

    I purchased a YORK Guardian Model HVAC unti in 2017 ..Since 2017 I have had replace the EVAP A COIL 2 times for leaks. That mean in 7 years this unit has had 3 coils put in A coils or EVAP coils in it

    I would like to join this lawsuit. York has been nothing but useless in backing their products up. I have a York unit that was installed in 2021 as a new build and has already gone out. I have filed a complaint with the BBB and it appears to lead no where. They do not back their products up nor fix their mess. Freon cost $115/lb and we are down to 1 lb due to their bad coil and lack of care. I am so over them !

      I’m having the same issue this past week. Faulty copper coil in the handler. Called York, iart under warrenty but not the 1400.00 in labor and refrigerant. It was installed 2021. All they had to say is parts wear out. Unless people and useless AC. Highly don’t recommend to anyone. In addition to the 1400.00 I had to pay 365.00 for the initial first visit to diagnose problem and add refrigerant while waiting 5 to 6 weeks for new coil.

      I had a york install in 2023. Heat pump coils freeze up in winter. Code 15. Which is from low freno and compressor is over heating at 167 degrees and shuts down. In summer code 02 had 13lbs of freno added. The installer has been great diesel heating for not charging me anything but JCL is of no help contact there is Greg. Running on heat strips today. Waiting on warm weather to check for leaks a second time.

    I have a three year old York ac unit. To date the company I purchased the unit from has replaced three condenser fan motors. Unit was repaired two days ago and is down again. The unit is down more than up. Are any other consumers having these issues?

    I bought a new work in 2023 had it for a year and a day they were out 15 × 2 fix everything in the whole air blower the day after a year they replaced replaced the air blower again and you now here I am with the air blower blown up again this is totally unacceptable it is winter time here in Florida and I am very cold

    We have a york affinity 9.3 furnace that was in the house we bought in 2019. In 2020 and 2021 we had the gas valve replaced and now we are getting so many error codes that are causing our furnace to malfunction. Our service repair technician gave us an article that states this model had a recall that expired that the dealers did not know about and that owners have to pay $2,000 for a kit and have it installed at the homeowners expense. I will not be doing this and will be forced to buy a new furnace. Super shady way of doing business for sure.

    We bought A5 ton York air conditioner 0n 06/2019. It went out on 10/23 . The company Aireserv,went out of business three years ago.
    The company that took over the contract said they’re not responsible for it going out even though the lines wore through and were touching the bottom of the compressor
    the pipes were hard pressed against the bottom where they Warren through.
