Nissan has agreed to extend warranties and reimburse repair expenses for consumers who purchased Sentra, Versa or Versa Note vehicles with a defective transmission.

The settlement will benefit consumers who purchased or leased a 2013 to 2017 Nissan Sentra, 2014 to 2017 Nissan Versa Note, and/or a 2012 to 2017 Nissan Versa vehicle equipped with a continuously variable transmission.

Plaintiffs in the Nissan class action lawsuit filed their claims in June 2018, alleging that their vehicles were equipped with defective transmissions.

The alleged transmission defect reportedly causes affected vehicles to suddenly jerk and shake while being operated. This can reportedly occur at inopportune times, with one plaintiff allegedly experiencing the problem in the middle of a five lane freeway.

According to the plaintiffs, the defect shows up in vehicles outside of the five year, 60,000 mile powertrain warranty sold with Nissan vehicles. This means that consumers are allegedly forced to foot the bill for repairs.

Nissan has not admitted any wrongdoing but recently agreed to settle the claims brought against them in the transmission class action.

Under the settlement, consumers will receive an extension of their Nissan New Vehicle Limited Warranty from 60 months or 60,000 miles to 84 months or 84,000 miles. Consumers may also be eligible to have their repair expenses reimbursed. More information is available in the “Potential Award” section below.

In order to receive reimbursement from the settlement, Class Members need to file a valid Claim Form by Jan. 30, 2020 or within 30 days of a qualifying transmission repair (whichever is later).

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Feb. 7, 2020. The final approval hearing for the Nissan class action settlement is March 6, 2020.

Who’s Eligible

Consumers who purchased or leased a 2013 to 2017 Nissan Sentra, 2014 to 2017 Nissan Versa Note, and/or a 2012 to 2017 Nissan Versa vehicle equipped with a continuously variable transmission.

Potential Award

Warranty extension, up to $4,750 in reimbursement or $1,000 voucher.

  • An extension of each Class Members’ Nissan New Vehicle Limited Warranty from 60 months or 60,000 miles to 84 months or 84,000 miles.
  • Consumers can also be reimbursed for 100 percent of the transmission repairs they paid for, if the following apply to the repairs:
    • Repairs were made by an authorized Nissan dealer;
    • Repairs were made within the time and mileage limits of the Warranty Extension (84 months or 84,000 miles);
    • Repairs were made before the vehicle’s odometer exceeded 90,000 miles or before Jan. 30, 2020 (whichever occurs first) if consumers can provide proof that a Nissan dealer diagnosed the problem and recommended qualifying repairs while the vehicle was covered by the warranty extension.
  • Reimbursement of up to $4,750 is available if eligible repairs were made by a non-Nissan repair facility.
  • Former owners who repaired transmissions two or more times may receive a $1,000 voucher toward the purchase or lease of a new Nissan or Infiniti car.

UPDATE: The Nissan Transmission Class Action Settlement was granted final approval on March 10, 2020.  Top Class Actions will continue to provide updates as we learn more.     I had a 2015 Nissan versa. I didn’t know that things were wong on it. My car started jurking as I either started to go or slow down. I didn’t have the money to take in. Last year on July 17th it did it again. It pulled to the left. I didn’t want to hit the car next to me so I pulled a little bit to the right. And unfortunately that’s all I remember. Then waking up in hospital. That day thank God I didn’t hit anyone but I did break my ankle at the worst part. I shattered my tibula and my fibular. Had to have the doctors reconstruct my ankle. Now I have tons of screws and two metal plates in my ankle holding it together. I have lots of problems and can’t walk well. Plus in pain 24/7. Needless to say I’m still recovering. Wish I would have know about the defects sooner. I can’t even work anymore. And have been denied disability. So what to do?

    It’s a 50k mile transmission. My 2013 needed the cvt replaced at 52k miles when the car became un-drivable. Now again, as I reach 104k miles the transmission is going out again. I’ve vowed to never buy another nissan again after experiencing this.

    I have a 2015 Nissan versa and on December 19th 2021 I started realizing that there was something really wrong with my vehicle. I got a estimate on it and it was the transmission. I did some more research and realized that this was a class action lawsuit and I’m missed it by a year My vehicle has been very well taken care of and up to date on oil changes and thus 4th and I still owe money on my vehicle and to cost to fix this transmission is $4,425.81 I was wondering if there’s anything else I could do to possibly get my vehicle fixed or what’s the next best thing? I am without a vehicle and it’s been almost it’s been an exact month the Nissan corporate office stated that they will do nothing about this and I should have extended the warranty and I had no clue that this was even a problem I was just needing some help and advice because I don’t know what to do if I’m still paying on vehicle that is no longer operable Please assist

      I have a 2013 Nissan Sentra and just started having transmission problems. I only have 55k miles on it and was told by their consumer affairs department that they would reimburse 50% but going to see if I can get them to honor the spirit of this lawsuit and cover the $4750, but not holding my breath…

        My brother-in-law purchased a ‘2015 Nissan Versa Note for me, as I am a single parent & could not afford to purchase my own car. He paid for it outright but, put the car directly in my name on the title. I was never sent any information on an extended warranty nor was I informed, when I inquired if there was a recall on my car because it was acting poorly, that there was one. In fact I was told that there was not but, if I wanted to have a diagnostic done, I could pay $120 to have it looked at. I later found out that I had actually asked the service department at Nissan in Iowa, while the warranty was still available. When I contacted consumer affairs after the CVT Transmission went out & explained what had occurred, that I would definitely receive a reimbursement. Since then, am Arbitration Specialist refuses to communicate with me & has said, without reason, that I will not receive a reimbursement. That was my entire savings for my daughter’s car, that we have been saving for years now & now I don’t have enough money to purchase her vehicle. I really don’t believe that this is right to do to people who have absolutely no recourse.

    My 2017 Sentra jerked once then once I got home turned the car off then on it would not drive forward. Told by Nissan that it was the transmission. They never said what it was about the transmission. Only had 4 years 137,000

      Yo compre mi carro Nissan Sentra en el 2016 y para el 2019 la transmisión se me descompuso le compré la transmisión otra vez y hoy se me descompone de nuevo a los tres años no se me así justo 5000 dls cuesta la transmisión y otra ves pagar otros 5000 dls nooo eso no está bien ellos saben los problemas que tienen sus transmisiónes y las siguen vendiendo le misma agencia

    I have a 2014 Nissan 2014 Versa Note with a failed CVT. The vehicle has 78,215 miles on it, well under the 84,000 mile limit. The 84 month limit however apparently ended in June of 2021. It is now October 2021 and Nissan told me they will not repair or replace the CVT. The common problem I see in many of these posts is that Nissan did not notify the proper owners of the vehicles. Instead, in my case, they claim they sent the notice to a previous owner (from 2018). I believe there needs to be a new class action suit filed against Nissan for not making an effort to remedy the inaccurate information they have in notifying owners. A proper remedy would be to allow owners who owned the vehicle during the time frame allowed in the CVT warranty extension and under the mileage limitation, at the expiration of the time limitation, to have their vehicles repaired or owners reimbursed if owners learn of the CVT warranty extension at a later date. The time and mileage allotted could be 1 year and 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, to all owners who can prove they owned the vehicles at the time of the CVT warranty extension but were not notified. Simply notifying someone who owned the vehicle at some time before the current owner is unacceptable and should be challenged.

      I have a 2014 Sentra. Nissan actually put in a new transmission a month ago. The very first day I had it I called them and took it in the next day because it’s still messed up. And they refused to pay for my rental car. They sent me $175 on a $1,200 bill. And they’re so so rude at Nissan consumer affairs!!

    Purchased 2016 Nissan Versa in Januarary 2021, my transmission went out on October 20th. Can’t take it for repair until next week. Had 70,000 on it , now has 86,400. Is it too late to file a claim? Please give me advise, am waiting for dealership to call me now.

      I am in a similar position as you are except my car is still under the 84,000 mileage limitation established by the CVT warranty extension. I would not bring your car into the dealership expecting any remedy. You will be pay a unnecessarily high bill to the dealership as I did and get nothing in return. They are quite cold in denying you any assistance. Further, if you file a claim against Nissan, you might get a call from their Customer Service by someone who will make you feel belittled as they coldly claim they will not help you.

    We own a 2017 Nissan Altima 73,000 miles. Our 20-year-old drives this car and came home and told us it start jerking on the freeway and acted like it didn’t want to accelerate. No warning lights on the dash to indicate a problem. Took a week and half to get it into the Nissan dealer. When the diagnotic test was done and we were told it needs a new transmission. The dealership told us to contact 1-800-Nissan1 to see if it would qualify for assistance with the replacement. Sadly, Nissan is not providing any assistance with this $4,000+ repair. I don’t understand how they can continue to use a poor transmission and not back their product. They are using the middle class to stay in business. I will never purchase another Nissan and I will discourage anyone else I know from buying one as well. We are disappointed that we are kinda stuck with this car now that we have to put this amount of money into a 4-year-old car. We drove a 2010 Honda Accord for 10 years, 210,000 and only changed the oil, tires, and spark plugs. We will go back to a Honda as soon as possible. Poor Customer Service, unfortunate that Nissan is putting its dealerships in this position. There are 5 other cars getting transmission replacements in front of ours.
    There should be a recall on this 2017 Nissan Altima asap!

    My 2016 Nissan Rouge engine fail at 19,000. Nissan repaired it a Nissan dealership. What do I do if it happen again?

    CVT transmission failed Nissan offered no help times are hard now have to deal with this problem thanks Nissan!
