Nissan has agreed to extend warranties and reimburse repair expenses for consumers who purchased Sentra, Versa or Versa Note vehicles with a defective transmission.

The settlement will benefit consumers who purchased or leased a 2013 to 2017 Nissan Sentra, 2014 to 2017 Nissan Versa Note, and/or a 2012 to 2017 Nissan Versa vehicle equipped with a continuously variable transmission.

Plaintiffs in the Nissan class action lawsuit filed their claims in June 2018, alleging that their vehicles were equipped with defective transmissions.

The alleged transmission defect reportedly causes affected vehicles to suddenly jerk and shake while being operated. This can reportedly occur at inopportune times, with one plaintiff allegedly experiencing the problem in the middle of a five lane freeway.

According to the plaintiffs, the defect shows up in vehicles outside of the five year, 60,000 mile powertrain warranty sold with Nissan vehicles. This means that consumers are allegedly forced to foot the bill for repairs.

Nissan has not admitted any wrongdoing but recently agreed to settle the claims brought against them in the transmission class action.

Under the settlement, consumers will receive an extension of their Nissan New Vehicle Limited Warranty from 60 months or 60,000 miles to 84 months or 84,000 miles. Consumers may also be eligible to have their repair expenses reimbursed. More information is available in the “Potential Award” section below.

In order to receive reimbursement from the settlement, Class Members need to file a valid Claim Form by Jan. 30, 2020 or within 30 days of a qualifying transmission repair (whichever is later).

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Feb. 7, 2020. The final approval hearing for the Nissan class action settlement is March 6, 2020.

Who’s Eligible

Consumers who purchased or leased a 2013 to 2017 Nissan Sentra, 2014 to 2017 Nissan Versa Note, and/or a 2012 to 2017 Nissan Versa vehicle equipped with a continuously variable transmission.

Potential Award

Warranty extension, up to $4,750 in reimbursement or $1,000 voucher.

  • An extension of each Class Members’ Nissan New Vehicle Limited Warranty from 60 months or 60,000 miles to 84 months or 84,000 miles.
  • Consumers can also be reimbursed for 100 percent of the transmission repairs they paid for, if the following apply to the repairs:
    • Repairs were made by an authorized Nissan dealer;
    • Repairs were made within the time and mileage limits of the Warranty Extension (84 months or 84,000 miles);
    • Repairs were made before the vehicle’s odometer exceeded 90,000 miles or before Jan. 30, 2020 (whichever occurs first) if consumers can provide proof that a Nissan dealer diagnosed the problem and recommended qualifying repairs while the vehicle was covered by the warranty extension.
  • Reimbursement of up to $4,750 is available if eligible repairs were made by a non-Nissan repair facility.
  • Former owners who repaired transmissions two or more times may receive a $1,000 voucher toward the purchase or lease of a new Nissan or Infiniti car.

  1. Melanie Schmidt says:

Just now came across this lawsuit information – was not notified and didn’t have knowledge prior. I submitted a claim as I believe we would be eligible and would rather them tell us know then not try. We purchased a 2012 Nissan Versa in November of 2018 with 81,528 miles. Ran fine until Jan 2021 when transmission failure occurred. We had towed to Nissan dealership to diagnose issue and transmission replacement was required. We had the repair done at Aamco Transmission in order to secure a warranty on the repair. This replacement (rebuilt) transmission also failed in May of 2021. At NO time did the dealership who diagnosed the issue OR Aamco inform us of the lawsuit. I believe the 30 day from repair window should NOT have been included due to consumers having no way to know this was an available remedy for cost reimbursement. Nissan dealerships should have at a minimum been required to inform the consumer of the lawsuit at time of diagnosis.

I was driving my car with my son in the car in the freeway when my car started jerking. I attempted to increase my speed and my car turned off. I was lucky I made it to the slow lane and not a lot of traffic was around. I purchased my car used in 2016. It is a 2014 Nissan Sentra with 133,300 miles. I called Nissan Head quarters and they told me I had too many miles on my car and they could not help with any of the cost to repair my vehicle. Can anything be done about this?

  3. Jennifer rosales says:

I bought a 2017 nissan sentra in aug of 2019. I have had it serviced regularly. While i was merging onto the freeway a semi wouldn’t merge over and my lane was ending so i tried to accelerate to get in front of it and my car started jerking and slowed down i had to run off the road to avoid being hit. Since then my car wouldnt go above 60 and took forever to get there jerking the whole time. I still owe 15,000 on this car. I am a single mom and that is my only form of transportation. I bought gaap coverage for 2000.00 and it expired at 100,000 miles. My car has 101,000. I called nissan and they said to take it to nissan dealership to get diagnostic report on it to see if they can help me. I had to pay towing fees out of pocket. If it does not fall under their warranty we should file another lawsuit because these transmissions are faulty, they should have been recalled. I could have been killed merging onto the freeway. They know they fault after 80,000 and they issued no warning when i purchased the car. When your paying 20,000 for a vehicle you should be able to drive it further than 100,000 miles.

    1. Melissa Shawver says:

I agree they really should be recalled. Because even when they fix it they still don’t run right.

  4. Amanda Boles says:

I have a 2016 Nissan Altima. Replaced the first transmission at 58,000 and just replaced the transmission for the second time at 158,000 miles.

    1. Carlotta Williams says:

I brought 2017 Nissan Rogue and transmission has went out at 158,345 miles. Now I don’t have no money to get another or pay to get it fix

  5. Luc Fotsing says:

I bought a 2013 Nissan Sentra a year ago, drove it twice, it has been sitting iny garage, transmission failure, I have money for repair. I hope I can get the transmission replaced by Nissan.

    1. Jessica says:

My Nissan Sentra 2013 transmission went out at 51K miles, they will not cover it because the warranty has expired in 2020 and the miles has it be less that 60K which they said which ever one comes first.

  6. Ray Bell says:

Hi I’m Ashley father who brought her 2015 Nissan Sentra and the transmission is acting up really bad. The car has 84589 miles and we just found out about the issue. Now they denial the case and said there is nothing they can do. I’m piss as we did bot get any communication on the related issue.

  7. Allen Straith says:

Just wondering. We just bought a 2016 Nissan Versa Note. Because I went into it knowing there are complaints, and my Dodge Journey transmission went out, I bought an extended warranty. But there is a deductible.

My question is, since I bought my Versa today, do I get this extended warranty? Because my car has 54K and it’s not more then 84 months old yet. So that would be nice to know. Hopefully I’ll get replies if someone knows.

  8. Jerome A Bottoms says:

How come the engine lite never comes on to warn about this issue before it gets worse? Nissan did what Volkswagens did. They are not allowing the Cars computer chips to report the issue to the driver.
    The delays make it worse.

  9. Yolis says:

My Nissan Sentra 2015 has been acting up not able to figure the issue of the force or jerk feeling like it’s going to turn off on me.took it to get checked out but haven’t gotten a solid answer on the issue. But i didn’t get a recall notice or letter and I mean I don’t think I should be held against that to be able to get my car still have to make the payments n pay the car off every month.! What can I do.?

  10. Hannah says:

We have a 2015 Nissan sentra bought in 2017. Has only 96k miles on it. Mechanic says transmission is gone. Car kept shutting off when stopped at light or slowing down.,keeps jerking and making weird noises. Our warranty expired at 84k miles, we still owe over 6k for this car and can’t afford 4k in repairs. This is ridiculous!! We weren’t notified about this lawsuit. They need to issue a recall.
