Nissan Altima owners have secured reimbursements, an extended warranty, or a $1,000 voucher under a recent class action settlement.
Class Members include U.S. residents who leased or purchased a model year 2013 through 2016 Nissan Altima equipped with a continuously variable transmission. Class Members include both current and former owners and lessees.
According to the Nissan Altima CVT class action lawsuit, certain models of Nissan Altimas suffered from a defect that caused their transmissions to fail prematurely. The plaintiffs say the result was shuddering, unexpected power surges, hesitation, stalling, and noises.
The affected Nissan Altimas were equipped with continuous variable automatic transmissions, also known as CVT. The complaint alleged that, instead of offering a fix for the defective transmission, Nissan required Altima owners and lessees to pay thousands to repair the problem.
As a result, alleged the Nissan Altima CVT class action lawsuit, those who purchased or leased the defective vehicles did not get what they paid for.
The automaker refused to admit any wrongdoing, but agreed to settle the Nissan Altima CVT class action lawsuit to avoid the expense and risk of further litigation.
Under the terms of the settlement, Nissan agreed to extend the warranty on Altimas with the affected CVTs, by 24 months or 24,000 miles; however, Class Members with vehicles that are either more than 84 months old or that have more than 84,000 miles are not eligible for the extended warranty.
In addition, Class Members can claim reimbursement for transmission repairs they had to make out-of-pocket or a $1,000 voucher towards the purchase of a new Nissan or Infinity.
Claim Forms are not required for Class Members seeking the warranty extension. Class Members claiming reimbursement for repairs must complete a Claim Form. Class Members seeking a voucher must go to a Nissan or Infinity dealer and present their name and identification within nine months of the effective date of the Nissan Altima CVT class action settlement.
The deadline to file a claim in the Nissan Altima CVT class action settlement is Jan. 30, 2020. The deadline for Class Members to object to or opt-out of the settlement is Feb. 7, 2020.
Who’s Eligible
Class Members include “all current and former owners and lessees who purchased or leased Class Vehicles in the United States and its territories including Puerto Rico.”
Class Vehicles include “2013-2016 model year Nissan Altima vehicles equipped with a CVT.”
Potential Award
Varies.
- Extension of the terms of the Nissan New Vehicle Limited Warranty for either 24 months or up to 24,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
- Reimbursement for transmission assembly repairs related to the alleged defect.
- Class Members who owned or leased vehicles that required two or more repairs or replacements can receive a $1,000 voucher toward the purchase of a Nissan or Infinity.
- Class Members with vehicles that are more than 84 months old or with more than 84,000 miles are not eligible for the extended warranty but they can claim reimbursement for expenses related to transmission repairs.

No proof of purchase required for the warranty extension.
Claims for reimbursement must include proof of repairs or replacements, including receipts, invoices, or billing statements.
Claims for the voucher must be made at an authorized Nissan or Infinity dealership and Class Members must present government issued identification.

Just received a letter in the mail requesting all of the documentation that I have already sent them. This is so frustrating.
I have also received this letter stating missing information when I sent them an itemized and Paid in FULL invoice from the Nissan dealership. It also states that if they don’t receive it by 7/5/20 that they will not contact me again and my claim will be rejected. Seriously? So how am I supposed to know if they receive it or not, if they’re not going to contact me again. Considering they (lost) didn’t receive the invoice I sent them the first time?? Guess I’m gonna send them the paid invoice again and find their contact number and call every single day.
You can also scan and email them the documents.
Does anyone have the email to where I can follow up with my claim?
Send it certified?? Then they have to sign for it and you will be notified.
When I sent my paperwork thru the email, I was given a receipt number for my items. I think that is the best way. If your sending anything of importance thru the mail, always register it and you will receive a receipt signed by the person receiving and you can track its location.
I received the same kind of letter requesting for more information. As it is it was so hard for me to come up with the money to have the transmission fixed. I already submitted all the documents that the Nissan dealership gave me after the fix. I find this hard to believe that want me to send again the documents I already sent. I will be waiting to hear what they say next!
Nope but I have a letter in the mail today looks like more information letter!
I just received another letter in the mail for more information
What does it say??
What does it say? I havent recieved anything
I also received a letter yesterday on June 8th 2020 (five months after I filed my initial claim). It seems suspicious to me that they are requesting all the required documents that I know I sent to them initially. I received confirmation via email when I sent the initial documents via their electronic filing system. I also sent copies via the USPS, but yet in the letter I received yesterday on June 8th 2020 it says all the required documents are missing. HUUMMM????
I believe this is some sort of stall tactic or an attempt not to pay the settlement, because I know all the required documents were sent via their electronic filing system and via the USPS, but yet their claim is they do not have any of the required documents. I will resend the documents for a third time and see what excuse they come up with this time. Everyone please beware the letter has a deadline of July 5th 2020. I will also make sure to send these documents certified mail.
Has anyone received their reimbursement? Or any dates when they are going to reimburse?
I am waiting as well. Anyone out there who has received a payment?
Nope but I have a letter in the mail today looks like more information letter!
And…. what does it say???
Requesting information that was sent in with the claim.
i have a 2017 Nissan Altima with transmission issues, I only have 73,000 miles. I noticed this settlement is for 2013-2016 Nissan Altimas but will they extended the warranty on the newer cars form 2017 and on?
I called 1-800-nissan1 and gave the representative my information including VIN #. She looked up my information and gave me a claim #. A week later my car was fixed!!
I was in your position in 2013 when there was an earlier settlement which covered vehicles up to 2010. My 2013 Altima was not covered but was covered in this claim. They are using the same engine so expect claims to be filed every few years. I have also bought a 2017 Nissan Altima. Keep any receipts from maintenance, mechanical issues, correspondences as you may need them in a few years.
The KCC website states the settlement administrator is reviewing the validity of all claims, and will mail reimbursement checks within 90 days of the effective date (March 10, 2020).
Tca messaged me in my messenger and said no lawsuits are settled quickly, that this one may make us wait 6 months up to a year to get paid, ridiculous that they arent admitting fault, many of you on here had trannies go out just after warranty like mine at 68,000 miles, majority has been in the 60s for everyone, they should be quick to solve this, not all of us can afford to wait. I had to get a loan to pay for the $4200 new tranny, the dealer gave me $300 discount, but ihad to pay 800 interest on the loan, they should be reimbursing that too?
Ours went out again after it was fixed. Ended up trading within because Nissan wouldn’t help. So now I am $9,000 upside down on the other car. I hope they will cover that for us also.
still waiting!! payed 3500 out of pocket at 62k for new transmission. 2k over factory warranty.
Me too. It’s going to take awhile before we get reimbursed.
90 days they have until after May 10th, you have to click on the website and read the article
Hello I just bought this car in May of 2019 and I bought at one of these local car companies and I never knew about the Nissan Altima cvt problem until now my car is at the dealer shop I make payments on the service man called me and said it’s definitely the cvt transmission is shock I file a claim with Nissan they told me to send them owner ship of car cause I wasn’t showing ownership so I did and I was also told that I fall in the time frame of the mileage and 7 years that if dealer states the problem they will help we’ll called yesterday told them the issue and they call me today saying that I can’t get help that I’m over the 45,000 miles on it and the warranty expired I don’t know what to do it’s 3,000 dollars to fix I still owe 9,000 in this car. What can I do
They are supposed to extend the warranty to 84000 miles so it should cover it?
So I took my car to get the tranny replaced because midway nissan told me a yr ago it was failing so after this law suite it should be getting fixed my car has been at the dealership since May 2nd an the powertrain people nissan needs to ok the repair are saying there’s nothing wrong with my car even tho their own mechanics have told them it’s failing the mechanic told me they have put over a hundred miles on my car making videos an sending them to powertrain I don’t know what to do
The effective date was May 10th, I’d say try again, and if they still refuse to fix it file a small claim with the courts and use this settlement site to show it is a known issue.
Also found this on the website update.
When will Nissan Implement the 24-month/24,000-mile Warranty Extension?
The Warranty Extension will be implemented as of the Effective Date. Please note that May 10, 2020 falls on Sunday. The first opportunity for repairs covered under the Warranty Extension will be Monday, May 11, 2020, provided that no appeals are filed.
Same here never got that news of the tranny so now I don’t qualify because over the 84 miles limit and still owe 8000on my car
Our 2016 Altima nearly got my wife killed when it would not accelerate through an intersection that she entered legally. We took the car to the dealership immediately after complaining of transmission problems and we were belittled. 4 months later the transmission needs replaced and the dealership is saying our warranty is voided because it has the wrong transmission fluid in it. I had to contact Nissan Corporate to escalate the claim. This is completely ridiculous. Actual mileage today is 58k. Still under original warranty.
You might get a different response now that the settlement is effective, I found this information on the April 22, update.

Is anyone else aware that Nissan has asked for $4.6 Billion in Covid 19 assistance….been trying to have Nissan honor the extension of the warranty, but apparently i need to go to a third party…..i wonder if that $4.6 Billion will help there response time
I haven’t heard about this but if its true I hope it does help their response time because it’s nearing 60 days.
Dealer refused to discuss any information regarding the class action suit. Offered to.check out the CVT. Check it for what. I have been complaining for 4 years. Waiting for it to go out. Dealer says th CVT was operating as designed. Poor design, poor operation
