The County of Los Angeles has agreed to pay a total of $53 million to settle class action allegations that women inmates were subject to degrading strip searches while entering or returning to the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, Calif.
The settlement represents the largest payout in the county’s history.
The Lynwood strip search settlement website notes that Class Members include those who were subjected to a strip search in a group outside of the bus garage while entering or returning from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Lynwood Jail between March 5, 2008 and Jan. 31, 2015.Â
Lead plaintiffs claimed that thousands of inmates were subjected to unnecessary and violating strip searches. Plaintiff Jessica Almaraz alleged that she was strip searched a total of five times during her time at the Sheriff Department’s Century Regional Detention Facility.
According to the female inmates, women were often strip searched in groups. They say that they were forced to take off their clothes and be invasively strip searched in front of other women. Allegedly, deputies degraded them and yelled profanity during these searches.
The plaintiffs claim that this treatment violated their Fourth Amendment rights.
Eligible Class Members will be able to receive at least $200 for one strip search, while those who experienced numerous strip searches are likely to end up with thousands of dollars.
Inmates must complete and return a Claim Form to receive monetary recovery. According to the strip search class action, qualifying individuals should have received a Claim Form in the mail. Class Members may also compete a Claim Form online.Â
Class Members can exclude themselves from the settlement, or object to it by June 4, 2020. Those who excluded themselves from the settlement retain their right to pursue independent litigation over the strip searches, but waive their rights to claim benefits from this settlement.
Former inmates who do nothing will receive no benefits, and waive their rights to pursue independent litigation.Â
Class Members can also attend the final approval hearing on July 20, 2020, in which a judge will decide whether or not the settlement will be approved.
Who’s Eligible
Individuals who were subjected to a strip search in a group outside of the bus garage while entering or returning from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Lynwood Jail between March 5, 2008 and Jan. 31, 2015.Â
Potential Award
At least $200 and up to thousands of dollars.
No Class Member who files a claim will receive less than $200 (for one search under the least bad conditions). Persons with the highest number of searches – up to 50 – will likely receive thousands of dollars.

I meant to say they used us to get rich
I used it to get rich
Read the whole shit on the Lynnwood shit it’s 200 to 1400
It says 2 to three months after the efective date Nov3
Don’t hold your hopes up it’s going to be 200 bucks if we get lucky we may get 1400
It says 2-3 months after November 3 so we still have to wait a couple more months;;;:::
The first week of November 2021 the funds will be available that’s when they will get on sending the checks out they were supposed to send them out in three separate payments but they’re trying to not spend so much money on mailing so they’re gonna do it in two payments depending on the amount your getting
October 4, 2021 should be the final approval and the day they close out the matter with that girl -October 4 should be the end of it
If they wanted to save money on postage, they should give us all the money they owe us in ONE payment. They have all our money sitting in a bank account somewhere where they are earning interest on it, and with all this stalling they are doing, they are making money, and by the time they finally get around to paying us, they ll probably break even. Not even losing a penny. That’s why they re taking so long. THE INTEREST THE BANK IS PAYING THEM!
That’s what I think! The longer they keep our money in the bank, the more they are earning. It’s just a big scam!
INTEREST ON
53 MILLION
IS NO JOKE!!
It says 2 to three months after the elective date Nov3
Don’t hold your hopes up it’s going to be 200 bucks if we get lucky we may get 1400
Effective I meant to say
It be more then 200 or 1400 one search is over 5000 dollar
Where does it say a search is over 5k? Because if that’s the case I was there for 8monthd fighting my case contact me @Ceejay.thatone on INSTAGRAM
It’s one only one person holding this shit up and they actually opted out of the whole thing but she keeps fighting it claiming is for more money when in reality safe wants nothing to do with the case. I wish there was a way to sue her sorry ass!!!
Because of her we’ve been waiting for a very longtime.
When can Weber receive our money? I’m sure the lawyers got Thiers already. What the hell!! We had to endure the humiliation and embarrassment we all deserve Moore than 200.00 this is bullshit I filed over a year and half ago now what bullshit r we gonna hear?
They will make an agreement by October and then they will distribute checks 3 months after ,.
Without anyone trying to object….cross fingers
If we have someone else that objects we will keep going through the same shiy over and over
We want our money
At the end of the day this money isn’t enough to pay for therapy. And the girl who opted out of the case an prolonging the matter is not fighting for us to get more. She is probably sitting back laughing at everyone who sitting on here telling their story thinking their compensation will be bigger.
I agree with ya
What t he e hell are we waiting for? Give us our damn checks now! You sure as hell didn’t wait when you deputies were demanding we take our clothes off, they threw all our stuff away, including correspondance we had just gotten from the court. It was truly embarrassing having those dyke deputies staring and talking shit about us and our bodies. Their were even male deputies allowed to watch. We were strip searched in the damn garage bus parking lot. It even rained and their was no roof above us. This is truly the most degenerate act a person could ever be made to go through with some 50+ other women, all able to see and hear one another. The deputies made it as embarrassing and humiliating for us as they possibly could with their obscene mouths and staring eyes. Bend over and cough is no joke. Some even looked up our vaginas with their flash lights. This was totally degrading.
I totally agree,. This is bullshit already,. This system is so wrong,
No justice.
Probably won’t see a check till August 2021
New update
I got this from the Lynwood strip search website
On August 11, 2020, the Federal District Court approved the Settlement in this case. On September 10, 2020, a former Class Member filed an appeal challenging the decision to approve the Settlement. The Court dismissed the appeal on FEBRUARY 12 2021 The Settlement will not become effective and payments will not be distributed until after the deadline passes for the former Class Member to file a petition for review before the U.S. Supreme Court. Because of the COVID-crisis, the U.S. Supreme Court extended the deadlines for filing petitions for review. The new deadline is in July. Once the Settlement becomes effective, it will take two to three months to process claims, calculate the amount due to each Class Member and begin payments. Additional updates will be posted as they become available.
Another update the girl who opted out has took this opportunity and she is taking it to the Supreme Court see judging justice page on Facebook
