Former ITT Technical Institute or Daniel Webster College students could benefit from a settlement related to ITT’s bankruptcy filing and may now update their information with the ITT student claim settlement administrator.

This settlement benefits individuals who attended ITT Technical Institute between Jan. 1, 2006, and Sept. 16, 2016, or Daniel Webster College between Jan. 1, 2009, and Sept. 16, 2016. According to the settlement website, there are around 450,000 who qualify for this student class.

ITT Technical Institute and Daniel Webster College were for-profit colleges run by the same company. However, according to the Project on Predatory Student Lending, from the Legal Services Center of Harvard Law School, ITT students may have been taken advantage of by the school’s lending practices.

According to a 2022 report from the Project on Predatory Student Lending, ITT got students to enroll in its programs based on false promises that the students could get good jobs in growing fields.

These false claims allegedly tricked students into applying for student aid to attend ITT schools — allowing ITT to reap the benefits.

“In the end, the vast majority of students who attended ITT either never received a degree or were left with a useless degree,” the ITT report states.

“All they had to show for their investment were exorbitantly high student debt and the inability to repay it — and, perhaps most devastatingly, opportunities forever lost.”

In September 2016, three ITT companies (ITT Educational Services Inc., ESI Service Corp., and Daniel Webster College Inc.) filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and closed the schools.

Students at these locations who hadn’t graduated were offered the option to apply for closed student loan discharge or transfer their credits to another institution, according to StudentAid.gov.

In 2017, former students filed a class action lawsuit to assert their claims in these proceedings. In February 2022, the bankruptcy court approved a plan to distribute some of the money from ITT’s bankruptcy estate to former students.

Under the terms of the distribution, Class Members can receive a cash payment. Payment amounts may vary based on the funds available and the number of Class Members who choose to participate, but the bankruptcy website anticipates initial payments will range from $10 to $100.

Class members who received a notice from the ITT bankruptcy student claim settlement can update their information with the settlement administrator by June 7, 2022.

Class members who do not update their information will not be eligible for the July 7, 2022 disbursement date. Their money will be reallocated to the next distribution.

Those who did not receive a notice but believe they should be included in the settlement can alert the ITT student claim settlement administrator by submitting a request for inclusion on the settlement website.

    It dose not work

  2. Don Baylor says:

$40,000+ student loan debt from DEC 2012- MAY 2015 at ITT, and you’re telling me we MIGHT be entitled to $10-$100 each!?! This is laughable and downright despicable.

    1. Marc M says:

I received the email and thought it was a scam. Why send me an email and not an official letter with the check. I want a check for $50k, not a Mcdonald’s Happy Meal payment of $10 or $100. And why mention Paypal or ACH? Just send a check for whatever the amount is. I did receive a 2nd email last night with a new password but have not checked it yet.

      1. Bri says:

        Right

    2. Kavin says:

Yes they are keeping the money for themselves. The lawyers are no better than itt tech. They should give us all the money back we put it in since we’re in debt.

  3. Natalie Collazo says:

I hate that I got fooled into going to this school twice. I attended initially starting in 2004 with my Associates and finishing in 2006. However, this lawsuits says starting 2006. I recall the school being shut down in 2005 for 2 week when the FBI came in and took their documents. I want to know why they chose this date and did not pursue going back further. This school should reimburse any student that attended. They were fraudulently acquiring money for the school and stealing from students like me faking document signatures and everything. These private loans have ruined my credit and life. I have been garnished in previous years which forced me to go back to living with my mother. They should be providing more to all students who attended period. If the feds caught these bad practices for the dates you have to realize that its been going on like this for years. Its high way robbery. It is appalling that we put people through this and there is nothing in the system in place to protect us. We ruin our credit and have an endless debt ratio that is constantly accruing interest daily and you will never be able to pay back. To top it off no one is fully communicate to all the servicing loan providers, no one is on the same page about this situation. ITT is not the only school doing this. I went to another school doing the same thing. The government needs to crack down on these ill practices of financial assistance. It is a bad circle to be in.
