Hyundai and car owners have reached a settlement to resolve claims that its panoramic sunroofs shatter unexpectedly.
The settlement benefits owners and lessees of Hyundai vehicles equipped with a panoramic sunroof and individuals who purchased a vehicle abroad while on active military duty.
Vehicles included in this settlement are: 2011-2016 model year Sonata Hybrid, 2010-2016 model year Tucson, 2012-2016 model year Sonata, 2012-2016 model year Veloster, 2013-2016 Santa Fe, 2013-2016 Santa Fe Sport, 2013-2016 Elantra GT, 2012-2016 model year Azera, and 2015-2016 model year Genesis vehicles.
Plaintiffs Billy Glenn, Roxana Fitzmaurice, Kim Fama, Kathy Warburton, Jahan Mulla, and Corinne Kane filed their class action lawsuit against Hyundai Motor America and Hyundai Motor Company in December 2015.
The class action filed in federal court claimed that Hyundai panoramic sunroofs were prone to spontaneous shattering.
The shattering allegedly occurred because of a defect with the glass used in Hyundai vehicles. The Hyundai class action lawsuit claimed that the spontaneous shattering was “at least in part due to the ceramic tint used on the glass.”
Plaintiffs said the sunroofs can shatter unexpectedly with a sound compared to “the sound of a gunshot” followed by glass raining down on vehicle passengers. This allegedly led to repair expenses and other costs including replacement of a vehicle.
Hyundai agreed to settle the class action lawsuit against them in February 2019. They do not admit any wrongdoing by settling the class action lawsuit.
There are several options for compensation under the Hyundai sunroof settlement. Non-monetary compensation includes an extended warranty. Monetary compensation includes reimbursement for repairs and rental cars, up to $200 for experiencing the shattering firsthand, and a $1,000 trade in rebate.
If Class Members do not want to trade in their vehicle for another Hyundai, they can seek alternate compensation up to $600 through a mediation session.
Hyundai owners who wish to recover compensation will need to file a valid Claim Form by July 25, 2019. Filing for repair reimbursement requires proof which is laid out in the Claim Form.
The deadline for objection or exclusion from the settlement is June 25, 2019.
Who’s Eligible
All owners and lessees of a Class Vehicle who purchased or leased a Class Vehicle in the United States AND all owners and lessees of a Class Vehicle who purchased or leased a Class Vehicle abroad while they were on active military duty.
Class Vehicles include the following models: 2011-2016 model year Sonata Hybrid, 2010-2016 model year Tucson, 2012-2016 model year Sonata, 2012-2016 model year Veloster, 2013-2016 Santa Fe, 2013-2016 Santa Fe Sport, 2013-2016 Elantra GT, 2012-2016 model year Azera, and 2015-2016 model year Genesis.
Potential Award
Warranty extension, reimbursement for repairs, reimbursement for rental cars, up to $200 for experiencing the shattering first hand, and a $1,000 trade-in rebate OR up to $600 in alternative dispute resolution.
Proof of Purchase
Proof of repair expenses including receipt, credit card statement or other documents showing amount paid.

I didn’t know about the problem or the lawsuit until 10-07-2019 when my 2013 Veloster’s sunroof exploded while driving. I made it to the Hyundai dealership in Fredericksburg, VA and hopefully they will cover all repairs. Is it too late to receive additional compensation?
i would like my sunroof replaced ..i haven’t had any issues however don’t want any can you tell me where to go to make this happen?? i have a 2015
I did experience the shattering sun roof in my 2016 Genesis, quite frankly, it was shocking. It sounded like a shot gun right near my head….not good at 65 MPH on a hwy…..I filed a claim and got repairs done….where are we with the financial compensation at this time?
I still have yet to receive any compensation as a result of my panoramic roof exploding, I was entitled to compensation for this experience..see note above, Robert Kelley.

Tonight, I was driving on the highway, opened the sunroof, and it shattered and detached flying off of my car onto the road behind me. Thank God there was no one behind me. If there had been a motorcyclist back there, it could have been fatal. I drove back and picked up the pieces on the highway. I had to drive with one hand and hold the bar where the sunroof was attached with the other arm to keep it from flying off and hurting someone. I just had my car serviced 2 weeks ago and they did not tell me there was a recall on this sunroof. I will be taking it to the dealer in the morning. The car is under warranty and they better fix it at no cost. This was some scary stuff. I have a busy schedule tomorrow and expect a loan car and no trouble from the Hyundai service manager. I’m not sure if this is included in this lawsuit as the entire window detached from my car and the window shattered. I have lots of pictures. VERY DANGEROUS STUFF.
I have had no issue TO DATE as of 7/12/ 2010 with my sunroof in my 2016 Hyundai Sonata. I would like to be put on the list for the extended warranty please.

My sunroof did not shatter but while my vehicle was being serviced at the dealership it was given back to me with a breakage line inside the windshield glass that led from the sunroof and I am still dealing with the dealership for repairs. I believe now this may have something to do with the sunroof. I place emphasis on the damage being inside the glass
I have not had any problems with my 2014 Veloster. But I would like the extended warranty. Thank you!
