Jessica Alba The Honest Company

The Honest Company Inc. has agreed to pay $1.55 million to settle a class action lawsuit over allegations it engaged in unfair and deceptive marketing and advertising by misrepresenting some of its cleaning products as being “free” of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS).

If you purchased Honest multi-surface cleaner, dish soap and/or laundry detergent between Jan. 17, 2012 and Aug. 2, 2017, you may be entitled to compensation from the Honest class action settlement.

If approved, this Honest class action settlement would resolve six class action lawsuits that accuse The Honest Company of labeling and marketing its multi-surface cleaner, dish soap and laundry detergent in a false and misleading manner by representing they were free of SLS even though their ingredients include sodium coco sulfate (SCS).

Honest represents SCS as a “coconut based cleanser” that is a “gentler alternative” to SLS, the Honest cleaning products class action lawsuit alleges. The plaintiffs assert that it is a scientific fact that SCS contains a significant amount of SLS.

“Honest broadly advertises its mission to produce and sell products that are natural and free of harmful chemicals,” the Honest class action lawsuit states. These representations allegedly included statements by Honest that its multi-surface cleaner, dish soap and laundry detergent are “Honestly Free of SLS” or “Honestly made without SLS.”

According to the Honest class action lawsuit, these representations were made on Honest’s blog posts as well as on the Twitter and Instagram accounts of its co-founders.

“Critically, these representations are false and misleading; each of the SCS Products contains SLS, in concentrations of up to 14%,” the Honest cleaning products class action lawsuit alleges.

The plaintiffs accuse Honest of charging a premium for its multi-surface cleaner, dish soap and laundry detergent that were falsely advertised as being free of SLS.

The six Honest class action lawsuits were transferred to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California for consolidation in August 2016.

The Honest Company denies the allegations but has agreed to settle the class action lawsuit to avoid the burden, expense and uncertainty of ongoing litigation.

The Honest multi-surface cleaner, dish soap and laundry detergent class action settlement was preliminarily approved on Aug. 2, 2017.

The deadline to opt out of or object to the Honest class action settlement is Nov. 15, 2017.

    SETTLEMENT DEFICIENCY LETTER –
CLAIM DEFICIENT – NO PROOF OF PURCHASE
Your claim is Deficient because you did not supply documentation to support your claimed purchases over 10 products.

We received your Claim Form in the Honest Marketing Litigation Settlement. However, your Claim is Deficient because you did not supply proof of purchase to support your claimed products over 10.

If you wish to cure this deficiency, you must provide supporting documentation for these purchases. If you do not provide supporting documentation for any eligible products over 10 that you listed, your claim will be reduced to 10 items. Some examples of supporting documentation are: (a) a receipt that shows the date of purchase, name of the product and amount paid for the product, (b) an itemized invoice that shows the date of purchase, name of the product and amount paid for the product, (c) other documentation that shows the date of purchase, name of the product and amount paid for the product. The list should also include where you purchased each product. Supporting documentation with simply a delivered date and an Honest order code, or a credit card statement with a total dollar purchase is not sufficient. Supporting documentation must include the name of the eligible product and the individual purchase price.

PLEASE INCLUDE A COPY OR IMAGE OF THIS SIGNED NOTICE WITH YOUR RESPONSE. Deficiency responses can be emailed to THCSettlement@AdministratorClassAction.com or mailed to:
