Top Class Actions viewers who filed a valid claim for the Honest Company dish soap, laundry detergent class action settlement are starting to receive their settlement checks in the mail, for amounts as high as $52.42.
The Honest Company agreed to pay $1.55 million to resolve a multidistrict litigation that alleged that the home products company engaged in deceptive marketing practices, falsely claiming its products were “free” of a common irritant.
This settlement resolves a prolonged multidistrict litigation against Jessica Alba’s home products company, The Honest Company.
Numerous class actions accused the company of false advertising, saying that the company’s products contained a well-known skin irritant, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), though they were advertised as “natural and free of harmful chemicals.”
Six class action lawsuits were filed against the company over the same issue, and the six were combined into a multidistrict litigation. The MDL accused The Honest Company of marketing a multi-purpose cleaner, dish soap, and laundry detergent as “free from SLS” and being a “coconut based cleaner.”
Allegedly, The Honest Company communicated to consumers that their ingredient, sodium coco sulfate, is a “gentler alternative” to SLS.
The Honest Company false advertising class action argues that sodium coco sulfate is not a gentle alternative to sodium lauryl sulfate as The Honest Company claims it is, because the former contains a large amount of the latter chemical. Consumers state that “each of the SCS Products contain SLS, in concentrations of up to 14%.”
The consumers go on to argue that each product labeled as “free of SLS” was priced at a higher price point than “non-natural cleansers,” and that the company was trying to financially capitalize on consumers’ preference for “all natural” over synthetic, harsh, or “non-natural” cleaning products.
According to the Honest class action lawsuits, the company misrepresented its products on social media accounts and blog posts on the company’s websites.
The Honest Company continues to claim that the class action allegations are false, but nonetheless agreed to pay a settlement rather than take the issue to court.
The settlement Class included all consumers who purchased the company’s multi-purpose cleanser, dish soap, and laundry detergent between Jan. 17, 2012 and Aug. 2, 2017.
The deadline to file a claim for the Honest Company MDL settlement passed on Nov. 15, 2017.
