The manufacturers of Grove Square Coffee have agreed to pay $25 million to settle class action claims that its single cup products meant to be used in Keurig machines contain instant coffee instead of ground coffee.

Alabama, California, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee consumers who purchased Grove Square Coffee in the single cup version between Sept. 30, 2010 and Sept. 30, 2014, could get cash from this settlement.

The Grove Square Coffee class action alleges that Grove Square Coffee Light Roast, Grove Square Coffee Medium Roast, and Grove Square Coffee Dark Roast single cup products are made up of more than 96 percent instant coffee.

This lawsuit is about the packaging of Grove Square Coffee. Plaintiff’s allege that Grove Square Coffee, through its packaging of Grove Square Coffee, misled consumers into believing that Grove Square Coffee Light Roast, Grove Square Coffee Medium Roast, and Grove Square Coffee Dark Roast products for use in Keurig ® brewing machines contained premium, ground coffee when the products actually consisted of more than 96% instant coffee. Plaintiffs argue the Defendants violated various state consumer protection and unjust enrichment laws. The Defendants deny any wrongdoing and deny all of the allegations made in the lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Grove Square class action settlement, Class Members will receive between $25 and $275. Alabama consumers may file a claim for a maximum $100 payout; New York residents who file a valid claim can expect to receive $275; consumers in California, Illinois, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee can claim $25 per product up to three items for a maximum total of $75.

It is too late to opt out of the Grove Square Coffee class action settlement, but Class Members who wish to object to its terms must do so in writing no later than March 23, 2020.

The deadline to file a claim is May 7, 2020 and the final hearing will take place on April 21, 2020.

      2. Chris K says:

LOL Betty totally made that up. 1st, “amazon and paypal recipients” there are no “recipients” until validated, assuming this is true (its not) 2nd: I dont know of any settlement that mandates you must cash the check in 30 days, its usually between 60 and 90 days. For those who chose amazon or paypal, unless you’ve received a deficiency notice, expect your payment sometime this week according to the settlement website.

      3. Concerned says:

The problem with this is that some people use the Paypal/Amazon process to bypass the mail because of fraud and issues with mailings. While KCC thinks they are being proactive they are actually causing problems for people who used those options for those reasons. If the customers choose those options then they should listen and use that as the customers wish and send them out as they requested. I am not sure if this information is accurate since I couldn’t find this in any other written form but it seems kinda silly. THere has already been such a long delay in sending payments out why would they want to do anything to prolong getting the funds out the claims they have already deemed valid. Can TCA give any input on this and update your followers?

        1. jake says:

Their statement wouldnt be accurate because they must follow the Plan of Allocation that the court decided on, which included three forms of payment.
