F-Series truck owners may be able to claim as much as $400 in compensation for repairs under the terms of the $5.3 million Ford door latch class action settlement.

Those who can benefit from the settlement agreement include current and former owners or lessees of model year 2015 through 2019 Ford F-Series trucks.

The Ford door latch class action lawsuit alleged cold weather caused the door latches on certain F-150 pickups to fail. Specifically, the doors would not latch and lock, the plaintiff said.

The plaintiff claimed he and other Ford owners relied on advertising that the trucks were “Built Ford Tough,” “Battle-Tested” and would provide “Rock-solid Durability.” However, the doors and locks on the plaintiff’s 2015 Ford F-150 XLT SuperCrew pickup allegedly could not handle cold weather.

The class action lawsuit claims the plaintiff went back to the dealership five times for problems with his truck’s door latches, including “front, rear, driver and passenger side doors that would not latch close; electric locks that would not open; door handles not moving; locks not releasing; and having to use the door’s exterior electronic keypad to lock the doors.” However, the dealership was unable to fix the problem.

The class action lawsuit claimed that other Ford truck owners had complained of similar issues online. The Ford trucks allegedly affected by the defect included model year 2015 to 2018 F-150s and 2017 to 2018 F-250s, F-350s, F-405s and F-550, along with model year 2019 F-150s, F-250s, F-350s, F-450s and F-550s.

According to the complaint, Ford issued two technical service bulletins about the allegedly defective door latches but was unable to solve the problem for truck owners. Additionally, the automaker failed to issue a recall over the Ford door latch problems.

Ford was no stranger to door latch defects, the class action lawsuit pointed out, noting the automaker had paid $640 million in 2016 over a problem affecting Mustangs, Escapes, Focuses, Lincoln MKCs and Transit Connect Vans that was caused by high temperatures.

The plaintiff alleged he and other Ford owners would not have purchased or paid as much for their trucks had they known about the cold weather door latch defect.

Ford denies the claims but agreed to pay $5.3 million to end the class action lawsuit in March.

Under the terms of the Ford door latch class action settlement, owners and lessees may be entitled to receive compensation for repairs, along with a cash award.

Additionally, Ford has agreed to notify Class Members of Door Latch Service Programs available in their area. Class Members can identify programs in their area by running their VIN through the settlement website.

Class Members can claim reimbursement for both past and future repairs of the Ford door latch.

Class Members who can show they paid for a door latch repair prior to May 4, 2020, can claim up to $400 in reimbursement for the repair and out-of-pocket expenses.

Those who can show that they paid for the repair of their door latch between May 4, 2020, and May 4, 2021, can claim up to $200 in reimbursement for repairs and out-of-pocket expenses, such as towing charges.

Class Members can also claim a $10 cash award for dissatisfaction with their door latch performance.

Claim forms can be submitted online or by mail. Class Members must include their VIN, along with supporting documentation if they are making a claim for reimbursement, such as receipts or invoices.

Claim forms for past repairs and for dissatisfaction are due by Nov. 30, 2020.

Class Members claiming future repairs must submit forms and supporting documentation by either Nov. 30, 2020, or 30 days after the repair, whichever is later.

Those who wish to exclude themselves or object to the class action settlement must do so by Nov. 2, 2020. The final hearing is scheduled for Dec. 2, 2020.

Who’s Eligible

Current and former owners or lessees of model year 2015 through 2019 Ford F-Series trucks. A VIN lookup is available on the settlement website to determine whether your truck qualifies.

Potential Award

Up to $400.

  • Class Members who can show they paid for a door latch repair prior to May 4, 2020, can claim up to $400 in reimbursement for the repair and out-of-pocket expenses, such as towing charges or car rentals.
  • Class Members who can show they paid for the repair of their door latch between May 4, 2020, and May 4, 2021, can claim up to $200 in reimbursement for repairs and out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Class Members can also claim a $10 cash award for dissatisfaction with their door latch performance.
Proof of Purchase

The vehicle’s VIN is required, along with supporting documentation for repairs or out-of-pocket expenses, such as receipts or invoices.

    2007 F150, Super Crew,,,A-frame is aluminum,,, Ford tuff is B.S.!!! After A-frame broke, also will not startup anymore. False advertising, is the samething as lieing!!!

    This just happened to my 2014 Ford Explorer. Is there any thing in the works for Explorers? I had an issue with a 2004 that I no longer own also.

    I have a 2004 F150 I sent it yo ford dealership for repair they can’t figure out why the vehicle won’t stay running when accelerating the truck dies
    Ford dealer said buy New Motor. Was there problem with motor in the past

    I have a2003 Ford ranger that the door Door latches suck They rattle go on down the road and have ever since I heard the truck There’s nothing you can do about it they will not close and they are from the original vehicle when I first was made so I think they need to go back on the years because my don’t life is sucks bad

    This is horsecrap. I had a 2005 E350 passenger van and 4 of the 6 doors had latch problems and in one case it cost me over $300 just to get the rear doors open so that we could get my electric wheelchair out of the back. The doors opened fine when the wheelchair was loaded, but when I got to the VA for my appointment, I could not open the door which in turn made me miss a lab and doctor appointment. I even tried to contact AAA, but they said they only handled the vehicle…not the contents. I argued that the latch was the problem, but they were of no help. I contacted Ford and was told that there was no recall for the problem, but my online research led me to a slew of Ford vehicles with the same problem. I think this problem should include older models where there were out-of-pocket expenses involved with repairing the problem.

    I run a fleet of 10 to 12 trucks and it cost me $ 1300 – $$ 2000per day to have ford keep a single truck for repair , so big deal ford may have payed for the repair but I’m still out a days pay .

    2007 Ford F-150 Super Crew has the same problem. This should include more years. I incur this problem every winter and have for years. I have to get out of the truck to try to get the latch unlocked and play with the outer handle. Have almost fallen on the ice and snow trying to get this to work properly. Door latch on passenger’s side is also faulty. Passengers have to push the door forcefully to get out or I have to get out of the driver’s side and open the passenger door. Please include more years and add if 2007 is covered. Thanks.

    2007 F150 supercrew ford door latches froze in cold weather, and locked me out when drive side when door shut while vehicle running. latch would not release. had to us my code to get back while running, and worse when I drove away, the door opened, door latch was stuck open I almost fell out of car, save my seatback catching me when door swung open and would not re-latch while driving. could have caused a wreck.
