Owners and lessees of 2014 and 2015 Jeep Cherokee, 2015 Jeep Renegade, 2015 Chrysler 200, or 2015 ProMaster City vehicles may qualify for a class action settlement over allegations that Fiat Chrysler supplied defective automatic transmissions.

Lead plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler after they and other consumers allegedly experienced problems with vehicles containing a nine-speed ZF 9HP automatic transmission.

According to the Fiat Chrysler class action lawsuit, a defect caused loud noises and made vehicles difficult to shift into gear.

These problems allegedly occurred despite Fiat Chrysler’s marketing of vehicles with the affected transmission as incorporating the benefits of both manual and automatic transmissions.

The Fiat Chrysler transmission class action lawsuit states that the defect presents a safety hazard because with delayed acceleration and sudden loss of power, the driver doesn’t have full control of the vehicle.

The FCA class action lawsuit points to numerous complaints about Class Vehicles made with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Repeatedly, consumers report that their FCA transmission completely shut down on highways and could have caused a serious accident.

Under the terms of the Fiat Chrysler transmission defect class action settlement, Class Members who made at least three transmission-related complaints to an FCA US-authorized dealer could receive up to $2,000 cash or a trade-in value of up to $4,000.

Fiat Chrysler has also agreed to extend warranties on vehicles containing the 9 Speed ZF 9HP automatic transmission of the Class Vehicles to 6 years or 100,000 miles.

Class Members have until May 15, 2019 to file a claim in the class action settlement. Class Members who wish to object to or opt out of the class action settlement must notify the court by Jan. 2, 2019.

The final hearing will be held on Feb. 13, 2019.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members include those “who purchased or leased new, in the United States, for family, household, or personal use, and still own, one of the following vehicles equipped with a 9 Speed ZF 9HP Automatic Transmission: model-years 2014 and 2015 Jeep Cherokee; model-year 2015 Jeep Renegade; model-year 2015 Chrysler 200; and model-year 2015 ProMaster City.”

To claim cash or trade-in value benefits, Class Members must have made at least three transmission-related complaints to an FCA US-authorized dealer before the date their class notice was made.

Potential Award

Up to $2,000 cash or $4,000 voucher.

  1. Tom Cunningham says:

My Husband and I own a 2015 Jeep Cherokee trailhawk, with a DFJ-9-SPD-948TE 4×4 Automatic Transmission. Is this covered under the Lawsuit? We have had no Complaint about the shifting in it.

    The Email address is his.

  2. Eleanor O says:

I didn’t get the little postcard notifying me of the Class Action Settlement until the day after Thanksgiving and the “Proof of Purchase-A completed claim form along with documentation of at least three transmission-related complaints made before Nov. 16, 2018 must be submitted.” A little late to notify me that I needed to make complaints before that date. Not that I have any, my Jeep Cherokee doesn’t seem to have any problems like that. However, if they are going to compensate only those that complained, that is unfair, they should compensate all who purchase that model vehicle. Just because it didn’t happen to me now, doesn’t mean that after the court date and the settlement has been reached that something won’t happen to my vehicle. Compensate me too!

  3. T. Shorter says:

I have 2016 Chrysler 200s that shifts hard however this class action does not cover 2016 models

  4. Sherrie MacAllister says:

Let me get this straight, because I didn’t take my vehicle back multiple times I can’t claim anything. That’s absurd! I do not have the time to keep taking my car to the dealership to get the transmission looked at. I was told “Unfortunately, it’s just the way the car is”. I didn’t take it back after that. Now I just have to deal with it, because I didn’t complain enough. Unbelievable, Chrysler…get it together. You know there is an issue, and if ANYONE took their vehicle to the dealership for this specific problem then they should be compensated PERIOD.

    1. S. S. says:

I agree…who has the time to take and leave the car there3 times, especially when the car was brand new. Now (for 1 year)my transmission sticks and can be very difficult. I thought they fixed it when I took it in for the recall. Guess it was a temp fix..now I’m stuck. Oh yes, the 2015 GC has 12,000 miles..almost new. Get it together Chrysler.Fiat. Not fair to consumers who trusted your corporation.

  5. Bob says:

My wife and I bought a brand new chrysler200 in 2015 with all the bells and whistles about a few months later I noticed the trans wasent shifting gears as smoothly as it had done when we first bought the car in fact it was getting worse long story short ! We took it back 3 times to the dealer we bought it from and 2 times to a different Chrysler dealer always giving us the run around and not fixing the trans, until it went out had it towed back to original dealer and one week later they put a brand new trans, in it ! I’m positive they new all along that they had a bad trans being put in the jeeps and cars !

  6. C. Edwards says:

Why don’t they just make it right. I live 140 miles from nearest dealership, I don’t have the time or the resources to drive to this dealership and complain about the transmission. Which is terrible, for hate this vehicle because of this faulty transmission. I have had every recall done on this vehicle including all the transmission updates and I don’t qualify for the 4000 dollar voucher bc I didn’t complain enough. Give me a freaking break, come on Chrisler fix this problem and make it right for all of us that bought this crappy vehicle.

  7. Curious Jeep Owner says:

I’m curious. I have a manual 2015 Jeep Patriot, which recently (before Nov 16th) needed the transmission replaced (under 5 years, under 100k miles). I have all the documentation of this transaction. Why wouldn’t this vehicle be covered by the defective transmission case?

    1. G Thompson says:

Because it is only for the 9-Speed Automatic Transmissions. There were specific issues with how this transmission shifts under certain conditions.

  8. Chesley Webber says:

I’m lucky that I didn’t sell or trade in this lemon. After taking the Jeep in ten times, four rental cars, way over a month without the use of the Jeep only to be told repeatedly that they couldn’t find the problem. I finally gave up and decided to live with it. Funny thing that they replaced so many parts and finally came up with a computer program that actually did take care of most of the problem even though they have documented that “no problem found” or “could not duplicate problem”!

  9. Isaac Newton says:

Why do you have an image of a Jeep Wrangler if they aren’t even included in the lawsuit. Maybe you should switch to an image of a Jeep Cherokee since that’s one of the vehicles actually involved. Genius idea right?

  10. Ri says:

If you have documented complaints at least 6 times about the transmission, you get $2000 cash payment or $4000 trade in voucher. Complained 4-5 times $800 cash or $2000 voucher, 3 times gets you $400 cash or $1,000 voucher. That’s way too much work for the owner/lessee.

    1. My Jeep is a Piece of Sh says:

Seriously. What a ridiculous metric to use to base the amount of funds you’ll receive on. The number of complaints. Well John complained 5 times and bill only complained 4 times. So Johns transmission is obviously worse than bills. No! The transmission was faulty and they both equally performed atraciously. Just Bc Bill didn’t have the time and energy to complain 6 different times. He doesn’t receive the full value. How utterly absurd!! Fiat Chrysler should be embarrassed!!

      1. Disappointed jeep owner says:

Agree! My 15 wrangler went back 4-5 times but could have been more if I could have gone every time they sent it back only to have same problem remain. They always wrote different problem even though I told them it was doing the same thing. Also ended up paying for one repair and my uncle fixed it by replacing one part less than $20 !! Noticed both front doors leak into the floor when it rains & roof NEVER removed.
Very rude service man so I dealt with a different one after he made an unjustified comment not realizing I was right behind him. Berwick, PA garage is not customer friendly! Will never purchase from them & disappointed with my jeep.
