Electrolux ice maker defect

A settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit alleging Electrolux manufactured and sold refrigerators that contain a defective ice maker. If you purchased a Crosley, Electrolux or Frigidaire “French Door” refrigerator-freezer unit with a Gen 1 Ice Maker, you may be entitled to payment from the class action settlement.

The ice maker class action lawsuit accused Frigidaire of acting deceptively in designing, manufacturing, selling and servicing “French Door” refrigerators with a certain type of ice maker. The plaintiffs allege that the Electrolux ice maker is defective.

Electrolux denies any wrongdoing but has agreed to settle the ice maker class action lawsuit to avoid the uncertainty, time and expense of further litigation.

Class Members who wish to opt out of the Electrolux ice maker class action settlement must do so no later than Jan. 4, 2016.

UPDATE: The court granted final approval of this settlement on Feb. 10, 2016. Claims are being processed at this time. Keep checking this article for updates.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members of the Electrolux ice maker settlement include: “[A]ll individuals and entities in the United States who are original purchasers of a Gen 1 FDBM.”

A “Gen 1 FDBM” is a refrigerator-freezer unit with dual refrigerator doors and the freezer compartment mounted below the refrigerator compartment that both:

  • Was manufactured by or for Electrolux, and
  • Contains a Gen 1 Ice Maker.

A “Gen 1 Ice Maker” is an ice maker module that:

  • Is mounted in the refrigerator compartment,
  • Dispenses ice through the refrigerator door,
  • Creates ice cubes by cooling water to below freezing by means of liquid coolant circulating through metal “fingers” inserted vertically into cup-shape molds filled with water, and
  • Produces cylindrical ice cubes.

NOTE: If you have received a full refund of the purchase price for a qualifying refrigerator or if you received a free exchange refrigerator without a Gen 1 Ice Maker, you are not a Class Member of this Electrolux ice maker settlement.

Potential Award

Under the terms of the ice maker class action settlement, Electrolux will pay a $100 cash benefit to each Claim Member who submits a timely and valid Claim Form.

Class Members who submit receipts documenting qualifying past out-of-pocket repair expenses may receive reimbursement for some or all of these expenses.

Additionally, Class Members may receive a non-transferable $100 rebate on the future purchase of qualifying Electrolux or Frigidaire appliances.

I have a 2013 Frigidaire French door refrigerator that was giving off a chemical odor smell. I contacted a repair man and as soon as he pulled the fridge out he discovered a baseball size ice cube on the back of the fridge in the area of the ice maker. The ice ball as caused rusting and a hole in my wall! The tech said my only option is to replace the unit before the ice causes damage to the exposed wires. The replacement kit that use to be offered by the company is not longer available because it NEVER fixed the problem. The company tells me there is nothing they can do and my make an model have not been recalled. I find that hard to believe because my tech new right away what the issue was from seeing it before. Please help with any advice or recourse that can be taken at this point!

    1. Julie Keith says:

I am having the same issue. It was “fixed” 3 times within the first two years while under Frigidaire warranty. I am still having the same problem and have had an independent appliance repair company come out 4 times in the past 3 months. They have replaced parts and tried several things, but nothing works. They have now told me there isn’t anything they can do (after I have spent $300+). The class action suit is closed and they are not being recalled.

    2. Clarence Houston says:

My name is CLARENCE HOUSTON… I am so upset with this situation we need to go to consumer affairs and sue them because this is a ongoing problem and this giant company is taking advantage of us as consumers.

      1. PISSED OFF IS MY NAME!!! says:

Clarence, I am making this my NEXT mission in life! I’m not even sure if you will get my reply since I am writing this year’s after it has closed! $100.00 bucks? Are they insane! Lawyers should have forced a recall!! Mine was manufactured in 2017!

    3. Pissed Off Is MY Name!! says:

Has anyone contacted you? This is insane! I’m so angry!

  2. Susan Marteney says:

We are having the same problems with our Frigidaire Electrolux icemaker as stated here in this lawsuit. But with model # FGHB2866PFGA purchased 3/2016.
We have been told by the extended manufactures warranty company (CPS) as well as the appliance repair techs (Factory Warranty), that the ice maker is no longer repairable and that the issue is a design flaw in the making of the refrigerator. They cannot do anything for us and then They refer us to contact the manufacturer. We have had 7 claims/work orders on this. Still with no avail and no working icemaker

  3. Leanne Kassab says:

We’ve had the same problem with our French door Frigidaire. We’ve had it repaired twice and my husband has repaired it twice. It works for a week then starts freezing up again. Never again. It’s only 5 years old and has been trouble for 4 out of 5 years.

  4. Jimmy Crystle says:

    Hello,
Our Frigidaire French door refrigerator is 5yrs old and has ice on the back where the ice maker motor is located and has rusted 2 circles on the back panel.. who can I reach out to? Also, finding white plastic shaving in our ice bin!!

    1. Gina says:

We are having the same issues and our ice maker stops working. Have you had any resolution?

    2. Gina Keesecker says:

We are having the same issues and our ice maker stops working. Have you had any resolution?

  5. Anthony H says:

Has anyone checked on their State’s Lemon Law. Moat states have one.
You can go through your credit card company requesting a refund on the purchase. The CC company will investigate. This may work for those of you who have recently purchased the product and are having multiple issues.

  6. LAURA says:

April 2020, Same issue going on Frigidaire model. I bought it about 5 years ago, the ice maker was “fixed” three times and then fell out of warranty. It is still broken to this day. I will never buy a Frigidaire model again. I thought I was doing good by spending the extra money on a good quality fridge, but that was not the case. I tell anyone who will listen not to buy a Frigidaire refrigerator. I still have it, because I cannot afford a new one. I just have to use ice trays to make ice cubes, in the most expensive refrigerator I have purchased.

  7. Albert says:

I am having a similar issue. My Model number, EW23BC&1IS, with Ice maker JBCD23 or 243297609 stopped working, had some sort of malfunction, and then the rest of the refrigerator stopped working.

  8. Giulia Rose Morales says:

I am having the same issue. Didn’t know about real closed & now it’s about to be 2020

    1. Emily Stephens says:

Ice formed in back of Electrolux Refreg. Icemaker stopped making ice for about the 10th time. Now not at all.

  9. Debbie Busick says:

Here it is 2019, my Frigidaire refrigerator is freezing up in back with a large ice ball and rusting. The class action suit was closed. I was offered 20% to buy another one of their brands. This fridge should have lasted at least 10 years. Anyone else having trouble?

    1. Debbie Busick says:

I didn’t know about this suit. We need to do something.

      1. Viviane Giusti says:

Hi Debbie, same situation here. Any advise? Were you able to get anything else? thank you

    2. Melva Lummus says:

I am having the same issue; I didn’t know there was a defect

      1. Viviane Giusti says:

I have the same issue and got offered the 20% but this is not fair, it should last 20-15 yrs and it was their mistake. Anyone found a solution? I had my product registered they should have advised.

Any one with any ideas of what I can do?
        Thanks

    3. Emily Stephens says:

I have same problem. My Refreg is it 6 yrs old. I cemaker does not work.

    4. Gary and Bonnie Niemi says:

      Hello Debbie,
My husband and I have an Electrolux refrigerator and found the same issue. There is a frozen ball on the back and rust on the back panel. Our Fidelity Home warranty does not cover repairs as they said it was subject to a class action lawsuit with the refrigerators being recalled. This we did not know anything about and this refrigerator is not used full time.
Have you found out if there is anything that Electrolux is willing to do at this point?

      1. Terrie Edwards says:

Yep! Same here. I found this site just now too. Had no idea EVERYONE was having this same Rust issue with their piece of Crap! I immediately had problems with the top flat plastic part of the freezer drawer. It cracked within 1 year of purchasing the Electrolux. Called the repair man. He Told me it would cost me almost what the thing cost to swap out the freezer drawer. He said they didn’t make that piece separate… And charged me $80 for the visit! WORTHLESS! I will NEVER BUY another Electrolux Product!

        1. Debbie P says:

I just found out about the Rust on the back of the refrigerator after I called the repair company to fix the freezer drawer that kept getting off track and causing ice to form on everything in the freezer. The repairman asked if I noticed rust on the back and I said yes and he stopped work and said Frigidaire deems the refrigerator “Non-Repairable”. I to had the problem with the top plastic piece on the drawer breaking off. The repairman told me the same thing. This is the second refrigerator, our first refrigerator had the icemaker at the top that wouldn’t work and it was replaced and now 7 years into this refrig a new problem that they only want to give 10% of cost of $2600. WOW what a company!!!! Now I can’t get thru to company.

    5. Robert says:

I am, SAME exact problem I was never notified of this Class action suite, Fridge is 6.5 years old. Rust and the ice actually adhered to the drywall and pulled that off the wall.

    6. Kris Sharma says:

I bought a Frigidaire Galaxy in 2014 and it stop cooling the refrigerator and the repair tech said that this fridge is not worth repairing and I should consider buying an new refrigerator. I am so bummed out.

    7. Patricia Dickens says:

Yes I am an apparently lots of other people are too. I am located in Alabama just wondering if a multi state class action can be filed.

  10. Jack McGlone says:

I have a refrigerator and have also had it repaired several times and didn’t know about the recall or class action suit payed top dollar for merchandise of inferior product

    1. Albert says:

I had an issue with my ice maker and now appears the entire refrigerator is not working. Electrolux is supposed to be a great brand or so I thought. We also had storm in the area a few months back and that seemed to do something to my Electrolux Oven. It gave us a code, but the repair costs ended up being upward of $800 in parts alone. I’m expecting my electrolux flat induction range and my electrolux microwave oven to go next based on what I’m seeing and reading.
