Electrolux ice maker defect

A settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit alleging Electrolux manufactured and sold refrigerators that contain a defective ice maker. If you purchased a Crosley, Electrolux or Frigidaire “French Door” refrigerator-freezer unit with a Gen 1 Ice Maker, you may be entitled to payment from the class action settlement.

The ice maker class action lawsuit accused Frigidaire of acting deceptively in designing, manufacturing, selling and servicing “French Door” refrigerators with a certain type of ice maker. The plaintiffs allege that the Electrolux ice maker is defective.

Electrolux denies any wrongdoing but has agreed to settle the ice maker class action lawsuit to avoid the uncertainty, time and expense of further litigation.

Class Members who wish to opt out of the Electrolux ice maker class action settlement must do so no later than Jan. 4, 2016.

UPDATE: The court granted final approval of this settlement on Feb. 10, 2016. Claims are being processed at this time. Keep checking this article for updates.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members of the Electrolux ice maker settlement include: “[A]ll individuals and entities in the United States who are original purchasers of a Gen 1 FDBM.”

A “Gen 1 FDBM” is a refrigerator-freezer unit with dual refrigerator doors and the freezer compartment mounted below the refrigerator compartment that both:

  • Was manufactured by or for Electrolux, and
  • Contains a Gen 1 Ice Maker.

A “Gen 1 Ice Maker” is an ice maker module that:

  • Is mounted in the refrigerator compartment,
  • Dispenses ice through the refrigerator door,
  • Creates ice cubes by cooling water to below freezing by means of liquid coolant circulating through metal “fingers” inserted vertically into cup-shape molds filled with water, and
  • Produces cylindrical ice cubes.

NOTE: If you have received a full refund of the purchase price for a qualifying refrigerator or if you received a free exchange refrigerator without a Gen 1 Ice Maker, you are not a Class Member of this Electrolux ice maker settlement.

Potential Award

$100 or more.

Under the terms of the ice maker class action settlement, Electrolux will pay a $100 cash benefit to each Claim Member who submits a timely and valid Claim Form.

Class Members who submit receipts documenting qualifying past out-of-pocket repair expenses may receive reimbursement for some or all of these expenses.

Additionally, Class Members may receive a non-transferable $100 rebate on the future purchase of qualifying Electrolux or Frigidaire appliances.

Proof of Purchase

Class Members must provide the serial number of the qualifying refrigerator.

NOTE: The Gen 1 FDBMs include some (but not all) refrigerators with model numbers that begin as follows:

This is bullshit. $2300 refrigerator flawed from the jump. I called frigidaire and the lady said had never heard of the problem. LIAR!! There’s got to be something more we can do. Sue personally?

  2. Linda Tremaine says:

We have owned our Electrolux Refrigerator w/built-in ice maker for about 4 years. The ice maker has worked about 6 months (off and on after repairs) during that time.Luckily we have a wet bar down the hall that has its own ice maker. I bring bags of ice from it and store them in the freezer part of the refer. This was the most expensive refrigerator we’ve ever owned. Its ridiculous how many times I have had the repairman out to fix the ice maker and it still doesn’t work! I literally just gave up on it. Its embarrassing to have guests over that try & get ice out of the refrigerator door. Unfortunately I did not get my claim form in on time to qualify for this class action settlement but I don’t really think it matters. $100 doesn’t do jack to fix this problem.

    Do not qualify

  4. David says:

I have had this problem since day one. My ice maker has been replaced twice as well as the mainboard and it didn’t take care of the problem. The service company quit responding to my request and I finally gave up. I don’t feel $100 is enough based off of how much I paid for this POS!! It sounds as if the attorneys are the ones that are being taken care of and not the consumers. I would like to start a FB page to boycott electrolux and frigidiare

  5. Kathy says:

Is this ONLY for Frigidaire with icemaker under the French door? Because I’ve had problems since day ONE with my Frigidaire Professional refrigerator. I think they purposely give you blank pages in the back of the \Use & Care booklet to write down how many service calls, parts concessions, labor concessions, or ESA numbers! We have paid well over $100 to have a NEW REFRIGERATOR repaired & on top of that paid to have a service contract! If they are denying any wrongdoing on their part then why are they offering $100 in cash? At the very least, offer to have the refrigerator covered under warranty for lifetime of original owner???? IMHO

  6. Hugh Riley says:

We decided not to have our ice-maker repaired due to its poor repair history. My claim for $85 was merely for the service call by the repair rep to assure me that it would only fail again and not worth repairing. We still do not have a functioning ice-maker, which, of course, we would like to have. Will Electrolux provide a new or repaired ice-maker as part of the settlement? We are willing to apply the claim and refund to the cost of a new,or properly repaired, ice-maker.Please advise.

  7. danwat1234 says:

How do the ice makers fail that are within this lawsuit, or what is the issue with them??

  8. karen j says:

We had 3 service calls within the first 6 months. The nice icemaker that was in the original fridge was replaced with a more regular style. I wasn’t happy with that but to make things worse, the new one had the same problems. We qualified for a new fridge and there were 3 more service repairsThe last repair company told Electrolux the ice was working and that was that. It was only working at the moment because I had fixed it by using a hair dryer to melt the built up ice. I let them come because I wanted to fix the ice maker so it wouldn’t do it again. As a result Electrolux no longer paid for service calls. I continued to use my method for fixing it until it finally stopped working. $100 is not enough for the icemaker. To fix it again would cost much more than that!

  9. David Huening says:

We have a Frigidaire, with french doors, icemaker in the door , manufactured by Electrolux, and we are on the third icemaker in 4 years. Our icemaker is not part of the settlement but should be. The first time the icemaker went out, it took a circuit board with it and was very expensive to repair. I want to cut my losses but it was the most expensive refrigerator we have ever owned and we have owned several over the last 47 years of marriage. I would replace it but everything else about the unit is just what we want and to replace it, I might have even worse luck with a new one. I wish they would offer an improved icemaker instead of offering a replacement that is the same as the ones that fail.
