Owners of certain front-loading clothes washers made by Electrolux can now claim cash payments, rebates or reimbursements from a class action settlement.
The settlement benefits persons who acquired certain Electrolux-made washers under the Electrolux, Frigidaire, Crosley, White-Westinghouse, or Kenmore brands between Jan. 1, 2004 and Dec. 31, 2011.
This settlement resolves two Electrolux class action lawsuits filed by purchasers in Georgia and Florida. In the earlier claim from 2008, plaintiffs Robert Brown and Michael Vogler alleged their Frigidaire-branded washers, manufactured by defendant Electrolux, have a design flaw that allowed water to collect in the gasket, fostering the development of mold and mildew.
Plaintiffs Wendy and Nicholas Grasso filed the second Electrolux class action lawsuit in January 2015 over roughly the same claims. The Grassos say their washer allows mold and mildew to grow inside it, creating a nasty smell that permeates the clothes in the washer and spreads throughout their home.
The Grassos allege Electrolux refused to remedy the problem under the washer’s warranty because the warranty supposedly does not cover mold. Electrolux reportedly told them to leave the washer door open and wipe the gasket, but that still didn’t fix the problem, the couple claims.
Though Electrolux continues to deny the plaintiffs’ claims, the company agreed to a class action settlement by October 2017. Under terms of the Electrolux class action settlement, Class Members who experienced mold or mildew problems with their washers may claim either a $50 payment, a rebate on the purchase of a new Electrolux appliance, or reimbursement for costs incurred dealing with the mold and mildew problem.
Class Members can object to the settlement or exclude themselves from it by submitting a written request no later than Feb. 20, 2018.
Who’s Eligible
Class Members include persons in the U.S. and its territories who, between Jan. 1, 2004 and Dec. 31, 2011 purchased a new Class Washer, acquired one with the purchase or remodel of a home, or received one as a gift.
According to the settlement agreement, Class Washers include “any new and previously unused high-efficiency front-load washing machine manufactured by Electrolux (including 3.1, 3.5, and 4+ platforms) and sold under the Electrolux, Frigidaire, Crosley, White-Westinghouse, or Kenmore brand names.”
A full list of brands/model numbers included in the settlement can be found here.
Potential Award
Up to $500.
Qualifying Class Members may choose to receive one of the following benefits for each Class Washer they purchased or acquired:
- A $50 cash payment;
- A cash rebate worth either 20 percent or five percent of the purchase price of a new Electrolux-manufactured appliance. A full list of the qualifying appliances is available here; or
- Reimbursement for up to $500 to cover out-of-pocket expenses incurred in addressing mold and mildew issues that were “persistent” – i.e., occurred more than once. Reimbursements for garments and fabric goods damaged due to the mold and mildew issue are limited to $150 out of the total $500 limit.
Class Members who did not experience a mold or mildew issue with their Class Washer are not entitled to the $50 cash payment or the 20 percent rebate.
Proof of Purchase
Class Members claiming reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses for service or replacement of a Class Washer or for damaged garments must include documentation of those expenses with their Claim Form. Damage may need to be documented with photographs. See the full Claim Form for detailed instructions.
Class Members must complete a separate Claim Form for each affected washer.

I have a moldy front loading Frigidaire washing machine. I try to dry the boot seal each time I use it, but I cannot control the mold that has built up under the boot seal or in the seal. The washing machine smells. I have tried vinegar and bleach to get rid of the mold, but no success. I am concerned that it is black mold which I know is very unhealthy.
Me, too. Have you been able to find any help with this? Any way to file a claim? This says “closed”
Frigidaire front load washer. So much mold and smell from the washer. Have tried numerous times to clean it without succeeding and I already dry it out and keep it open after use.
Terrible washer and dryer. Not spinning out and leaving terrible smells after drying.
My Electrolux the door smelled we cleaned with baking soda ok for awhile then mold we tried bleach then the black rubber was coming off thought this was a great brand even have vaccumm this was my own gift so easy washing machine to many allergies in our home I love to join please I put out alot of money on that washer and I don’t know it just died so now down to a 350buck one thanks
Frigidaire affinity front load washer, has a horrible smell and inside rubber ring holds water and has caused mold all threw rubber seal. No washer should hold a half an inch of water inside rubber seal when finished washing. I am constantly bleaching it to try and get smell out of it, and so it does not grow any more mold. Ive ruined a good bit of clothing due to mold and having to dump bleach inside of washer. Washer is roughly two years old. Has held water since the day i purchased it. What a waste of money!
I submitted all the necessary paperwork long before the due date and communicated thru email with the Administrators for my settlement check to no avail. The emails always say “you are in good standings and checks are being mailed out”. Who monitors this process…they contacted me for my information and I submitted it honestly…yet I have not received anything.
Do you have to be the original buyers to file the claim? We bought a house with this washer.
MY ELECTROLUX FRONT END LOAD WASHING MACHINE IS HOLDING WATER AND MILDEW. THIS WASHER IS ONLY TWO YEARS OLD AND THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE
After washing clothes….I wipe the inside down with bleached cloth…and dry it with another cloth then leave the door open for at least an hour…so there is no odor. I did this because it will get a musty molding odor if u close it after washing
I also have this issue going on with my washer. It smells horrible and my clothes stinks. I’ve tried everything, I had a tech tell me that the company know about the problem but hasn’t done anything to fix it. Sign me up!
