Electrolux Frigidaire

Owners of certain front-loading clothes washers made by Electrolux can now claim cash payments, rebates or reimbursements from a class action settlement.

The settlement benefits persons who acquired certain Electrolux-made washers under the Electrolux, Frigidaire, Crosley, White-Westinghouse, or Kenmore brands between Jan. 1, 2004 and Dec. 31, 2011.

This settlement resolves two Electrolux class action lawsuits filed by purchasers in Georgia and Florida. In the earlier claim from 2008, plaintiffs Robert Brown and Michael Vogler alleged their Frigidaire-branded washers, manufactured by defendant Electrolux, have a design flaw that allowed water to collect in the gasket, fostering the development of mold and mildew.

Plaintiffs Wendy and Nicholas Grasso filed the second Electrolux class action lawsuit in January 2015 over roughly the same claims. The Grassos say their washer allows mold and mildew to grow inside it, creating a nasty smell that permeates the clothes in the washer and spreads throughout their home.

The Grassos allege Electrolux refused to remedy the problem under the washer’s warranty because the warranty supposedly does not cover mold. Electrolux reportedly told them to leave the washer door open and wipe the gasket, but that still didn’t fix the problem, the couple claims.

Though Electrolux continues to deny the plaintiffs’ claims, the company agreed to a class action settlement by October 2017. Under terms of the Electrolux class action settlement, Class Members who experienced mold or mildew problems with their washers may claim either a $50 payment, a rebate on the purchase of a new Electrolux appliance, or reimbursement for costs incurred dealing with the mold and mildew problem.

Class Members can object to the settlement or exclude themselves from it by submitting a written request no later than Feb. 20, 2018.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members include persons in the U.S. and its territories who, between Jan. 1, 2004 and Dec. 31, 2011 purchased a new Class Washer, acquired one with the purchase or remodel of a home, or received one as a gift.

According to the settlement agreement, Class Washers include “any new and previously unused high-efficiency front-load washing machine manufactured by Electrolux (including 3.1, 3.5, and 4+ platforms) and sold under the Electrolux, Frigidaire, Crosley, White-Westinghouse, or Kenmore brand names.”

A full list of brands/model numbers included in the settlement can be found here.

Potential Award

Up to $500.

Qualifying Class Members may choose to receive one of the following benefits for each Class Washer they purchased or acquired:

  • A $50 cash payment;
  • A cash rebate worth either 20 percent or five percent of the purchase price of a new Electrolux-manufactured appliance. A full list of the qualifying appliances is available here; or
  • Reimbursement for up to $500 to cover out-of-pocket expenses incurred in addressing mold and mildew issues that were “persistent” – i.e., occurred more than once. Reimbursements for garments and fabric goods damaged due to the mold and mildew issue are limited to $150 out of the total $500 limit.

Class Members who did not experience a mold or mildew issue with their Class Washer are not entitled to the $50 cash payment or the 20 percent rebate.

Proof of Purchase

Class Members claiming reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses for service or replacement of a Class Washer or for damaged garments must include documentation of those expenses with their Claim Form. Damage may need to be documented with photographs. See the full Claim Form for detailed instructions.

Class Members must complete a separate Claim Form for each affected washer.

  1. Brenda Kling-Kella says:

I have a front loading Frigidaire and it’s been problems from the get go. The mold and mildew has always been a problem even though I have always left the door wide open when not in use. There are other issues with my washer as well. I have been contacting the company on and off since I first purchased my washer but they never wanted to do anything about it. They always had some flimsy excuse as to why they couldn’t do anything about their faulty product. Now their latest excuse is the age of my washer. If they would of taken care of the issue from the start, my washer would of been brand new. This company manufactured a poorly designed machine and then when they had people complaining left and right about it, they kept right on manufacturing more. It’s called greed! All they care about is making tons of money, they could care less if they have a great quality product or not just as long as the money rolls in. Now they don’t want to fix the problem because they will lose money. GREED! Please sign me up for a class action lawsuit.

  4. Mary Eileen says:

This settlement amount that they are paying is a joke, so I am going to get $50 for my mold covered front door gasket. It will cost more than that just to purchase a new gasket not including labor. So meanwhile, I continually leave the door open when not in use and get to see this ugly toxic moldy gasket. I have tried everything to rid the mold to no avail. I surely will never by another Frigidaire product again.

I have a Kenmore washer with the mold problem, my model was not included in the last settlement. When I saw this I was hopeful that my model was included this time. When I clicked on the list all that came up was a bunch of Electrolux appliances no Kenmore. Is this link accurate for the models involved?

    1. Top Class Actions says:

      1. Kelly says:

My problem was not only the mold but bleach. No one said not to use it. The arm that holds the barrel broke and cracked. Its made of aluminum not steal. I had to buy a insurance policy through sears, because my warranty expired. We only had it a year and a few months. 900.00! I had to buy a 500.00 policy for sears to come out and replace the entire inside, or pay for another new one.

      2. Diane Stensrude says:

I have gone to the doctors numerous times with respiratory issues only to find that I am extremely allergic to mold. We had our vents cleaned, carpet removed, only to find that the mold came from my washer. I have a Frigidaire Affinity front load washer; which should never be called a washer. No one should have to wash and dry their wash machine out after every wash and leave the door open. Frigidaire should be ashamed of this product.

      8. Robyn Perez says:
