Anthem Inc. and other health benefit companies have agreed to pay $115 million to settle a class action lawsuit stemming from a data breach announced by Anthem in February 2015.

If you received a notice from Anthem about the data breach or if your personal information was taken during the Anthem data breach, you may be entitled to benefits from the class action settlement.

In February 2015, Anthem announced that a cyberattack resulted in the theft of information stored in its databases. The information from about 79 million people was reportedly stolen, and possibly included their names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, health care ID numbers, home addresses, email addresses and employment information.

The Anthem data breach class action lawsuit accused Anthem and the other defendants of failing to adequately safeguard consumers’ personal information. The defendants include Anthem, its subsidiaries and affiliates, and certain Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies who had members with data stored on Anthem’s databases that was compromised due to the Anthem data breach.

The defendants deny any wrongdoing but agreed to settle the Anthem data breach class action lawsuit to avoid the burden and expense of ongoing litigation.

According to the Anthem data breach class action settlement documents, Anthem has agreed to change its business practices in order to improve the security of customers’ personal information stored on its databases.

Anthem will also establish a $115 million fund to provide payment for out-of-pocket losses Class Members suffered or credit monitoring services to protect Class Members from future harm.

Class Members who would like to opt out of or object to the Anthem data breach settlement must do so no later than Dec. 29, 2017.

  5. Kimberly Kuhlow says:

Yes and I was notified through the courts when dealing with Juvenile Justice for my son. But like everything they do wrong. Just gets briefly brushed under the rug. Should get money just for the stress of the breach alone. And I am still stressing over it. Constantly checking my credit and worried about it. Im sure smart criminals will just wait couple yrs for it to pass before using are breached information.

  6. Thirty Three says:

Do the numbers on this. 115 million is being paid out. There are 80 million customers affected. Maybe each customer effected should get 1 million. The lawyers can take 35 million for doing the work. Who is getting all the money from this settlement? It sure isn’t the customers that will have to deal with people messing with their financial affairs from now on. They just want to give the customer a year or so of credit monitoring that wont’ do anything anyways. That’s it so wrong. 1thirtythree133@gmail.com

    1. Mimi says:

I was thinking the same thing!

  7. Pam says:

This is a joke. We should get at least a $1,000 compensation. We have to live with this shadow hanging over us for the rest of our lives.

    1. Erico Davias says:

      I AGREE

  8. Mary says:

Anthem should offer free credit monitoring for life. One year is not sufficient since the information will be out there for years.

  9. Carol Fensterer says:

How do you insert your birth date?

  10. Shaun says:

What they are offer is not good enough my son is affected and he is 5. Monitoring his social for a year is not good enough. The way stuff has been changed around if I keep his same social and someone uses it, he will be responsible for it when he turns 18. Im not accepting this damn deal at all. I rather just change his social and not give it to anyone. Going to check and see if that is even an option.
