Concerns Mount from Former Xbox LIVE Subscribers

By John Curran

Xbox LIVEIt is now possible to access movies, TV shows and music everywhere, as touted by numerous cable and internet service providers, but some of those providing these services may have jumped the gun on some issues. Some former Xbox LIVE subscribers are worried about certain aspects of the service that happened before October 2011, which may make them eligible to pursue a class action lawsuit against Microsoft.

When Xbox LIVE was first launched, the main goal was for users to be able to play games against other players throughout the world. However, the market for watching streaming TV, movies and even music through video game systems and other devices made Xbox LIVE a popular service beyond that for gaming. Unlike other internet-based streaming services, however, the terms of service for Xbox LIVE are simply displayed on the screen. Many Xbox LIVE users of any age quickly clicked through the terms rather than reading them.

Microsoft has been the subject of several class action lawsuits regarding its practices relating to the Xbox LIVE service. People have questioned whether or not there are issues with its billing practices regarding automatic payments, as well as the in-system Microsoft Points used to purchase other games or in-game maps or equipment packages.

Finally, Xbox LIVE lawsuit lawyers have noted that the company can have what some term a draconian approach to banning users. The service can be cancelled for users who use their devices to play illegal content, such as pirated movies. However, at least one woman complained that when she had an independent shop repair her system, Microsoft decided to ban her and keep the in-system Microsoft Points that she had paid for before the ban.
