$27 million settlement in George Floyd civil rights lawsuit

The City of Minneapolis has agreed to pay $27 million to settle a civil rights lawsuit filed by George Floyd’s family after his police-involved death in May of 2020.

Floyd, a Black man, was killed when now-former police officer Derek Chauvin pinned his knee into Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes, despite Floyd already being handcuffed. Floyd’s death sparked protests against police brutality internationally as well as a civil rights lawsuit against the City of Minneapolis and the police officers involved.

“The city of Minneapolis has a history of policies and procedures and deliberate indifference when it comes to the treatment of arrestees, especially Black men,” the family’s attorney said at a news conference held when the lawsuit was originally filed in July.

The $27 million settlement amount exceeds the largest payout by the city by $7 million, reports CBC News. The announcement of the settlement comes as the criminal trial for one former officer accused of murder proceeds through jury selection.

“It’s going to be a long journey to justice. This is just one step on the journey to justice,” one of the Floyd family’s attorneys said at a news conference held to announce the “historic” settlement late last week. “This makes a statement that George Floyd deserved better than what we witnessed on May 25, 2020, that George Floyd’s life mattered, and that by extension, Black lives matter.”

Lawyers for the family also stated that the George Floyd civil rights lawsuit and resulting settlement was an important step.

“The one thing we know as Black people … is there is no guarantee that a police officer will be convicted for killing a Black person unjustly in our country,” one attorney said during the news conference. “That’s what history has taught us.”

Minneapolis City Council members reportedly came to the settlement after meeting privately and unanimously voting for the $27 million settlement. In addition to the settlement to George Floyd’s family, CBC reports that $500,000 will go to a south Minneapolis neighborhood where a George Floyd memorial has erected.

“If I could get him back, I would give all this back,” Floyd’s brother said about the settlement.
